The Rotary Club Young Photographer of The Year Competition
This year Youghal Rotary Club decided to run a Young Photographer of
the Year Competition. It is the aim of the Youghal Rotary Club to do as
much as possible to benefit the youth of the community and so with the
support of President Catherine Kelly and Chairperson of the Youth
Opportunities committee Karen Farrell, the Rotary Young Photographer
of the Year was launched. The organising and running of the competition
was handed over to Dorothy Heaphy and the wheels were set in motion
in October and we launched in November. There were two themes this
year, one being Nature and the other being Sport. There were three age
categories, ranging from 8 years to 18 years and great enthusiasm was
shown by all ages. With the closing date approaching at the end of
January, there was frantic shooting (through the lens) going on every
where and entries were coming in rapidly at The Red Store who had
agreed to act as a collection centre for the entries. It was easy to see early
on that the standard was high and it was going to be tough to judge the
entries. Our thanks to Con Hurley for his willing help in judging the
Nature shots and for his interest and approach to the task. Having chosen
the winners in each age group, all the winning entries were enlarged and
framed and along with a mounted photo belonging to each entrant exhibited
at The Red Store on Monday night February 20th...awards night!
The awards night proved a great success with huge excitement as the
entrants arrived to see who had been placed as winners. Each age group
had 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Highly Commended and Commended awarded and of
course who would be crowned Young Photographer of the Year? Seeing
their photo enlarged, framed and on display gave a very satisfying sense
of achievement to everyone concerned. The children were glowing as was
their parents and the whole night was a hugely rewarding experience for
the young photographers, their parents, their schools and the Youghal
Rotary Club. The award for the Young Photographer was sponsored by
A.I.B Bank and manager Marie Barry was on hand to present the prize to
the victor Zoe Goggin. The Rotary Club sponsored all the all other awards
and the enlarging and framing of the prints. Each person received a certificate
and we take this opportunity to thank each and every one who
entered, by doing so you made the event an amazing success. Our thanks
to the schools who welcomed and encouraged the participation in the
competition and facilitated the handing out of entry forms etc. Next years
themes were announced in advance so as to give plenty opportunity for
taking the entry for next year! For any further details on the competition
please email dorothy.heaphy@yahoo.com. We ask that all those whose
framed print is on display at the A.I.B bank please contact club secretary
Anne Delaney on 086-8128246 to collect your print around March 17th
(St. Patrick's Day) they will be available for collecting by arrangement.
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL ADOPTS €1m FACELIFT PLAN FOR TOWN ENTRANCE
By Christy Parker
The unimpressive vista offered by the County Waterford entrance point
(Northern Gateway) to Youghal is set to be totally transformed following
an ambitious project initiated by Youghal Town Council. The February
town council meeting eagerly approved a plan to create an eye-catching
and functional vista that will induce west-bound traffic to detour into the
town rather than continuing onto the town's bypass.
The project, to be conducted in phases, will span five years and cost about
€1m. The council is to seek funding assistance from Cork and Waterford
county councils, while community groups such as Tidy Towns, could also
come aboard and seek grant aid for their input.
The 'master plan,' envisages 1.8 km of the R643 between the Rhincrew
and Greencloyne roundabouts being heavily planted with trees, flowers
and colourful shrubs, creating an attractive first impact leading to a treelined
avenue with parallel cycle and pedestrian paths alongside seating
areas. Hydro-seeding and hedging would be deployed to solidify the
effect throughout.
A large sculpture to signify the town's entrance, a recreation area on
adjoining land, along with lighting and other effects to highlight outstanding
features in the area is also proposed.
Currently, the area offers little more than uninspiring bog land, some
bland industrial complexes, a few closed factories, a landfill and recycling
centre with a few hundred hovering seagulls and a sludge treatment
plant heavily intent on expanding its operations. A bare hillside, stripped
off foliage during the bypass construction a decade ago, accentuates the
dourness.
Impressive
An impressive pedigree attaches to Monkstown-based Jermyn Egan
Landscape Consultants, whose wide diversity of clients include Aldi,
Doneraile Castle, COPE Foundation, toll roads and the Blue Haven Hotel,
Kinsale.
Presenting their prototype plan to February's meeting, Kevin Jermyn and
James Egan, concurred with town clerk Liam Ryan's assessment that the
route is immensely unattractive and neglected.
Mr Jermyn proposed hydro-seeding the bare hillside and sewing climber
plants on adjacent structures. (The sign welcoming east-bound drivers to
the Déise will also go, incidentally -and any blue and white flags will
surely be buried in a deep chambers 50 metres underground!) Lavender
plants should lend appeal to the roundabouts, while "an attractive stone
bridge that is quite visible as one approaches the Rhincrew roundabout,
could be highlighted with lighting," he advised. The old Youghal Brick
Factory structure would also be emphasised, while a large sculptor at the
approach would perhaps reflect both Youghal's rich history and its future
aspirations, in a maritime theme.
Attractions
The town clerk said "Youghal has many attractions, including its beaches,
harbour, heritage and fine restaurants, but they are being lost to people
on the N25 meeting this depressing entrance." He said the phased
nature of the scheme offered flexibility in that it could be dissected, with
individual areas treated independently and different groups involved at
various sections.
Mr. Ryan stressed that the project "has to be delivered" and that Youghal
Town Council had taken leadership in commissioning and paying for the
Master Plan. "It's up to the other local authorities to come on board with
us now and make a financial commitment on an annual basis," he urged.
While one would hope that he project would not eventually fall victim to
whatever forces have seen the once-eulogised Millennium Garden pond
installations fall into such ugly decline, Mr. Ryan's words carried determination
and optimism. He hoped that the initial phase could be sanctioned
and completed within a year or two, "so you get an immediate
impact for everyone."

By Christy Parker
The meeting, convened by the Save Youghal Ambulance (SYA) group saw
several local councillors -including mayor Eoin Coyne- in attendance, as
were some local GPs. The highest echelons of politics were represented only
by Deputy Sherlock. East Cork Sin Féin TD Sandra McLellan was abroad on
party business and was unable to attend her Fine Gael counterpart David
Stanton also indisposed. Both sent letters of apology and explanation. Deputy
Stanton's party colleague for the area, Tom Barry had, it was related, not
responded in any fashion (bar silence) to an invitation to attend.
The meeting opened with PRO for the SYA Jim Flanagan, observing that two
dates set to herald the removal of the Youghal ambulance -Sept 2nd 2011 and
Feb 34th last -had passed without the service being altered.
There followed a power point presentation on behalf of SYA outlining the
present standards and the perceived deficiencies in the proposed changes. The
presentation made the following relevant claims:
•Immediate area population: 8,500 and population within 12 minutes travel
time is 44,000.
•HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority) response guidelines for
life-threatening calls are: Initial response 7-8 minutes; patient carrying vehicle
within 19 minutes. The HSE claims the new service would herald a first
response within 90 seconds and critics say that won't happen.
•Currently the Youghal ambulance operates two crews on Mon-Thur covering
8 am-8 pm and an on-call (from home) system from 8 pm to 8 am. On
Friday, Saturday and Sunday there are full-time crews on duty 24/7.
•A new central control centre, based in Ballyshannon is not expected to be
ready for another year at least.
•Present operational boundaries will cease to exist with much local knowledge
replaced by SatNav technology operated by non-locals.
• Advanced digital radio communications, "supposed to be there by
Christmas, are still not operational.
•Not enough advanced paramedics yet trained.
• The intermediate care vehicle still not delivered; one designated for
Bantry and one for Mallow, but none so far apportioned for East Cork; in any
case the area is deemed very large for one vehicle to serve, with three ambulances
already stretched to cover it.
• Cork Orthopaedic hospital now closed and moved to South Infirmary,
which closes it’s A&E at 8 pm. That places extra workload on CUH, where
waiting time to get in for ambulances crews can be up to two hours. Also,
Mercy hospital is losing it’s paediatric service to CUH too. Ambulance crews
have to wait hours also to get trollies returned.
Additionally, serious doubts were expressed from the floor regarding the
anticipated satellite systems, in reference to obscure rural locations and inadequate
co-ordinate system in Ireland generally.
SYA Chairwoman Tara O'Connell explained that the committee, while
appearing relatively low on the public's radar in recent months, had been
actively engaged on negotiations involving HSE and political figures behind
the scenes. These included two meetings, in Clonmel and Mallow between
such parties. "It's not just Youghal that is being affected," she reminded, "but
East Cork generally," before stipulating that public support remained, as
always, crucial to the campaign.
Letter; Subsequently, SYA secretary Susan Morgan, read a letter to the SYA
from Director of the National Ambulance Service, Robert Morton. The letter
referred to the past meetings before stating that "the HSE's focus for the
immediate future is now on addressing the industrial relations aspect of the
changes required through the States industrial relations machinery," along
with addressing "a legal challenge from a private ambulance company seeking
an injunction against the HSE recruiting additional staff." There would be
no changes meantime, he letter concluded.
The chairwoman said this presented more time for the SYA and it’s supporters
to press counter-claims further and indeed for the HSE time to streamline
and configure it’s plans. This is now, it seems, the kernel of the issue. For the
gathering generally accepted that some change is inevitable -and indeed may
be beneficial- but there was and is considerable anger that the HSE seems
intent on implementing change regardless of infrastructural inadequacies and
without the system not being first tested.
Following a brief address by Mayor Coyne in which he queried the logic of
sending up to four paramedics -between first responder car and an ambulance-to
the scene of a call whereas one ambulance crew of two is now
presently doing so. Deputy Sherlock took the microphone for ten minutes. It
was quickly obvious that the response of the HSE -and that of its subsidiary
the National Ambulance Service (NAS)- to the months of negotiations and
meetings had served to frustrate and annoy him considerably.
"Smokescreen" The minister labelled Mr. Morton's sentiments on industrial
resolutions "a bit of a smokescreen" and a mechanism to excuse difficulties
in implementing and in opposition to the proposed changes. He said the issue
was really "about modifying the service to ensure people have confidence in
it."
Meanwhile the SYA committee urged the public to remain committed to the
cause, again crediting the publicity and demonstrations to date as reason why
the proposed removal of the ambulance had thus far survived two deadlines.
First Holy Communion and Confirmation 2012
The Sacrament of the Eucharist - First Holy
Communion
The word ‘communion’ means to be united with. Catholics
believe that in holy communion they are united in a special
way with Jesus Christ, that they are sharing in the body and
blood of Christ the Saviour. Holy Communion, and the
whole service (Mass) is also known as Eucharist, from a
Greek word meaning thanksgiving.
The Sacrament of the Eucharist (First Holy Communion) is
a Roman Catholic ceremony. It is the colloquial name for a
person's first celebration of the sacrament of the Eucharist.
The celebration of First Eucharist is a sacred and important
moment on a long journey of faith development. Together
with Baptism and Confirmation, it opens the door to full
membership of the Christian community. At the ceremony,
each child receives Communion, normally in the form of a
small round piece of bread placed by the Priest in the palms
of their hands.
Most Catholic children receive their First Communion when
they’re seven or eight years of age because this is considered
the age of reason. This means that most children are usually
in second class in school when they make their First
Communion.
In order for to receive communion the recipient should be
without sin and in a state of grace. Traditionally, therefore
young Catholic children will make their first confession, i.e.
the Sacrament of Reconciliation some weeks before receiving
their First Holy Communion. The Sacrament of Baptism
must also have been received before receiving the First
Communion. Click here for some suggested books on the
Sacrament of the Eucharist.
Aura offers free swim assessment to
children over 4 year of age
Aura Youghal is extending an open invitation to parents to bring their
children to the centre this week for a free swimming assessment with one
of their qualified swim instructors.
Families with children as young as four years of age are welcome to take
up the offer which is designed to help parents to decide on whether or not
their child could benefit from swimming lessons.
"Learning to swim is a valuable life skill and we encourage parents to do
what they can to ensure that their children learn how to swim from an
early age," said Tracy Kenneally, Operations Manager at Aura Youghal
Leisure Centre.
The free swim assessments will provide parents with a real insight into
how well their children can swim and at what level they could be enrolled
in Aura's Swim Academy.
The ten week Aura Swim Academy course is based on assigning children
to classes which reflect their ability instead of their age so that they can
learn alongside children of a similar level.
"This is a very important aspect of helping children to build their confidence
in the water. We have one of the most successful methods of teaching
children from four years of age and up how to swim," said Tracy.
"We start with the basics of making sure that children feel comfortable in
the water. They are shown how to enter and exit the pool safely, how to
float on their front and back and how to complete simple water movements,"
she added.
Aura's swim instructors also help children with their breathing techniques
and teach them how to tread water and how to develop their swim strokes.
The success of Aura Swim Academy is down to the fact that it allows children
to progress through eight levels. Each level focuses on learning and
developing new swimming skills.
Parents who wish to make an appointment for a free swim assessment for
their children or who want to learn more about how Aura's Swim
Academy can improve their child's swimming skills are welcome to call
Aura at 024 91614.
YOUGHAL RATES ARREARS HIT
ALMOST €1/4m EURO FOR 2011
By Christy Parker
Youghal Town Council was met with rates arrears of almost a €¼ million
for 2011. Review figures show that 74 accounts, equal to 41.98% of the
total, left a shortfall of €239,149.28 through failure to meet the demands
of a rate set at €65.31. The Youghal rate -unaltered for 2012- compares to
Cork County Council's €74.75. The arrears percentage shows an increase
of almost 4.5% from 2010.
The council entered the year with a collectable target -including arrears
from 2010- of €1,684,548 but only collected €977,296 (58.02%). Of the
€709, 665 uncollected, €470,516 is deemed non-collectable through nonexistent
businesses and bankruptcy.
Three insolvent businesses owe the council over €79,800 between them,
while three firms still trading owe a total of €41, 380. Since January, five
accounts have been settled, reducing the arrears total by just €9,087.
Youghal Town Manager Patricia Power has ended the practice of accepting
post-dated cheques for year end, arguing the level of 'bounced'
cheques made it unsustainable.
Meanwhile assistant town clerk Helen Mulcahy says the council "is
extremely sympathetic" towards those struggling to meet their rates
demands and has "several easy payment schemes in place to assist them,
including direct debit on weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly payments.
The rates collector is available at all times to discuss problems,"
she proceeds, adding that the council "has no option but to pursue all
arrears vigorously -including through the courts- given the serious threat
to various projects projected for the town in the coming year."
Family, friends and club mates joined local councillors, including Youghal
Mayor Eoin Coyne, at a civic reception in the Mall Arts Centre to honour
Claycastle Pitch and Putt club's Anthony O'Loughlin's victory in the 2011
National Strokeplay Championships. The 32-year old father of two claimed
the title in Douglas last July, snatching victory with a scintillating 12 under
par final round to leave him 25 under -a new course record- for the tournament.
He is the first Youghal man ever to win the title and weeks later also
captained Cork to victory in the national inter-county championships in
Portmarnock.
Individual-based civic receptions are rare occurrences at council headquarters
these times and Mr. O'Loughlin's achievement reflect the new level to
which the bar has been raised to acquire one. It comes also in a year when
the Claycastle club is poised to host June's 2012 National Matchplay
Championships and amidst town council plans to provide a modern club
house at the venue.
Mayor Eoin Coyne said the player, currently ranked sixth in Ireland, had
"brought honour and pride to himself, his family, his club and his town" in
a victory that "bore testament to his dedication and love for his sport as well
as to the outstanding facilities at Claycastle. I also wish to thank him for
being a fantastic ambassador for Youghal," he added, pledging on-going
town council support for the club, alongside it’s sponsorship for June's
event. The mayor presented the champion with a Waterford Crystal glass
plate insignia bearing the Youghal Coat of Arms.
For his part, Mr O'Loughlin said he never imagined on taking up the game
20 years ago that he'd be "standing here having won an All-Ireland title." He
thanked his wife Paula for babysitting his young daughters Katy and Aoife
while he practiced, club members who had travelled to Douglas and his dad
Tommy, who had followed him persistently. "I'd been telling him for years
I was good but I'm sure he was having doubts," he joked. "At last he saw
me play well and I was very proud to have him there on the day." He
recalled veteran player Sonny Mangan, who had tutored him from day one,
with the timeless advice for sport and life that, when things go astray, keep
your head down and your ass up!"
Mr O'Loughlin also acknowledged club member Don Sheehan for his
encouragement towards self-belief, the club's committee, which he
described as "the most progressive and hard-working" he had experienced
across 16 years and "Liam Ryan and Cllr Sammy Revins for their great
assistance in reviving the plans for a much needed clubhouse and their continuous
support, which is hugely appreciated. Likewise, he recognised "the
wonderful support and sponsorship from the businesses in the town in very
testing times" and without whose help "it would be very difficult to host
June's championships.
UNINSPIRED RESPONSE AT HOUSEHOLD CHARGE MEETING
By Christy Parker
It started well but ended in near farce. About 100 people had convened at
the Red Store last Wednesday night (February 22nd) to consider the
imposition of the new 'household charge,' or rather, how best to avoid
paying it. An hour into the meeting, almost half the attendance had
departed. By the end, another hour on, about 30 remained -and some of
those were arguing with each other. Disillusion had dimmed the day.
Most people had responded to posters affiliated to the nationwide group
called Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes (CAHWT), which
has been rallying communities across the country to refuse to pay the
charge/tax. What they expected and what they encountered were widely
divergent.
The beginning was excellent. Pat Bulman who, along with Heidi
Schniete, was spearheading the meeting, delivered a rousing address that
hit several nails on the head. He labelled the new "tax" an unfair
expectancy from people already hard pressed by a plethora of charges. He
rebutted the government's plea that the money would support community
services on the basis that these were already supplemented by a welter of
direct and indirect taxes -adding ironic humour by listing a dozen of them.
"How many bloody times do we have to pay for these services?!" he
asked rhetorically.
Impressively, he castigated the wastage of such tax revenue on "the
upkeep of a bloated, inefficient, corrupt, wasteful system of higher public
servants" and to maintain "the opulence of an oppressive, authoritarian,
central European political and financial elite." He said owning a
home was a necessity towards a basic, dignified existence and "not just
another source of income for this gombeen government and their criminal
banker associates! Don't pay. Don't register for this tax," he exhorted.
"Mass non-registration is critical." When local authorities - who must
implement the charge - eventually started prosecuting defaulters, he
pledged, "people will swamp the courts with their families, friends and
the people of this campaign." Finally, he called for a national "day of
rage" to reinforce the resentment.
Awaken Waterford; It was resolute stuff and he had the crowd on his
side. Then he brought on 'Awaken Waterford,' the main act, represented
by James O'Sullivan and his friend Paul. Awaken Waterford' is an organisation,
or movement, opposed to the perceived legitimacy of the household
tax but also carrying the burden of wider disillusionment with world
capitalism and its political affiliations. We know this because by the end
of their power point presentation they were basking in the waters of ruthless
globalisation and the shark-like greed of America's corporate culture,
etc., etc. We also learned that Ireland Inc. - the country itself - is actually
a corporation trading for profit and shares a credit-rating website -
www.dnb.ie - with international financial institutions.
It's difficult to decide whether 'Awaken Waterford' were the right people
in the wrong place or the wrong people in the right place. Certainly their
presentation style was in the wrong place, the Montessori school up the
road probably being a more appropriate setting! James did 90% of the
talking but addressing and exhorting the audience in a manner more associated
with a classroom with, especially, faux-spontaneous questions to
his co-presenter, was downright ridiculous. After 20 minutes, the first dissenting
voice from the floor left, complaining loudly that he hadn't come
for a lecture or to be patronised. Subsequent departees would leave silently,
probably feeling he had already spoken for them.
It was a pity because what 'Awaken Waterford' had to say was brilliantly
enlightening and has reached national consciousness through debate on
Pat Kenny's RTE radio show apparently. (Not that it needs that endorsement
to validate it). Unfortunately for Youghal, they used a wider agenda
to support a specific point. Hence it took 75 minutes to present an argument
which is replicated exactly, without the voice commentary, in 12
minutes on Youtube:
http://youtu.be/dvPevANo3b0
It was, as they had warned "a new concept" and they had called for
"patience" and "an open mind approach from the outset (always an ominous
sign.) Not only was it a new concept, it was one far to intricate for
an audience gathered in lieu of advertising posters that suggested a totally
different approach. Crucially, it aspired to individual empowerment,
whereas the audience were seeking strength in numbers. They got more
of a thesis than a tactic.
Sovereignty and consent; It would take far too much space to replicate
the various strands of the presentation. Very basically the argument was
based on 'Individual Sovereignty.' This sovereignty, which we all inherit
on exit from the womb, is higher than any statute, which is man-made
law. Such statutes can only be applied to us through our consent, therefore.
In fact, goes the argument, we are only breaking a law at all
(Common or Criminal Law that is) if we cause loss or hurt or fraud to
befall another person. As we do not - presumably - consent to the
Household Charge we are not breaking any law by not paying it!
Statutes, the argument proceeds, are civil law, which "is business law" and
based on contracts between the individual and the State. So contract law
is the basis of all statutes and requires consensus, genuineness of consent,
signatures, full disclosure, valuable consideration and certainty of terms.
The household charge stood accused of failing to meet these criteria.
However silence in the face of a Household Charge demand is seen as
consent so it is necessary to respond somehow. This would ideally take
the form of repeatedly sending letters (a prepared one is available) asking
on what basis one is obliged to pay, expressing a willingness to pay it if a
viable reason is proffered but warning that otherwise, continuous requests
to pay it would amount to harassment. This constitutes, legally, discussion,
as against entering dispute by refusing outright to pay. The trick is
to continually respond, though one feels that in practice, an appearance
before a magistrate, justly or otherwise still remains a likely outcome.
Strawman; There is more. The State - all States in fact - have long
addressed this inherent individual sovereignty by requiring birth registration.
The subsequent birth cert - Paul held one up in case we had never
seen one! - thus becomes our mirrors image in the parallel world of 'legislation'
or our 'legal fiction. It is sometimes called our Strawman, as
James and Paul explained. In legal definition, the Strawman is the one targeted
by the Household Charge, as he/she does not have the protection of
Individual sovereignty. See?
At the end of the night, Sinn Féin Youghal Town and Cork County
Councillor Michelle Hennessy stressed her party's opposition to the task
and urged public resistance. By then though, bed was more appealing than
bedlam to the remnants of the crowd. A further, brief input from the floor
saw castigation of the evening's presentation style more than its content,
though some felt they had been enriched by the information regardless of
all else. A man apparently affiliated a Cork branch of CAHWT's complained
that that the whole show had been "an abuse of the meeting." Mr.
Bulman CAHWT had agreed to provide posters and deal with the venue
but that he had been allocated permission to choose the format and guests.
He had opted for Awaken Waterford. Regardless, he called for unity
against the challenge to the Household Charge. Unfortunately, disunity
had already stolen the day.
Seniors Glasheen 0 – 2 Youghal United
Youghal travelled away to Glasheen in the hopes of maintaining their lead
at the top of the table. They did that with another great result winning 2-
0. Darren Hennessy scored twice putting in a personal fine performance
capping it off with a brace of goals. Since the minor blip in the middle of
January away to CIT the lads have not conceded a goal in the league while
beating Passage away 3-0 and Temple at home 4-0. Well done to all
involved.
WWEC Youghal United 1 – 1 Inch (AET) Inch won 9-8 on penalties
This game had everything goal line clearances, last ditch defending, hitting
posts, extra time and penalties. This was a good old fashioned cup tie
with Youghal hoping to progress to the last 16 of the Ned Barry cup. Inch
stood in the way of that to spoil Youghal’s party been the gaffers 50th
birthday and all but I’d say it didn’t spoil the party afterwards…….
Youghal took the lead when substitute Stephen Barry netted in the first
period of extra time. Inch equalized on the stroke of the extra time first
half period. Both sides settled for spotters there after. It’s a lottery but
someone had to loose. Brian McDermott had a chance to win it for
youghal but his effort straight down the middle didn’t fool the Inch keeper
who saved with ease ( I have it on video Brian if you want to see it)
Might stick it up on facebook…….
Cork Schoolgirls League – U-16s Youghal Utd 5 – Ballinhassig 1
Youghal Utd continued their unbeaten run in the league with a comprehensive
victory over Ballinhassig at Ardrath Park last Sunday. A month’s
lay-off didn’t show as the girls set about their business quickly. Holly
Twomey and Ellen Benaim both came close early on with Youghal virtually
camped in the opposition half. The pressure finally told when a great
run by Rachel Geary ended with a low shot that the keeper failed to keep
out. Amy Benaim then added a second mid way through the first half with
a solo effort from the left, finishing cooly under the keeper. At 2-0
Youghal allowed Ballinhassig back into the game with some slack defending
from a corner, resulting in Claire Christopher pulling one back for the
visitors when her looping effort evaded Anne-Marie Geary. The goal
seemed to knock Youghal out of their complacency and they responded by
stretching their lead to 3-1 after Amy Benaim outpaced the right back and
her cut back was turned in at close range by Rebecca Kearns. In the second
half Ballinhassig rarely threatened despite plenty of the play and with
Anne-Marie Geary looking more assured by every game in goal, the lead
looked safe. Meanwhile, Youghal wasted opportunity after opportunity on
the counter attack. Rachel Galvin could have had a hatrick alone with
Holly Twomey also missing out. Youghal rectified matters with 15 minutes
remaining with two superbly taken goals. The first saw the outstanding
Rachel Geary finish off Rebecca Kearns pass after the number 10
danced around two defenders to superbly set up her team mate. With only
minutes remaining, Rachel Galvin then split the defence with a beautiful
through ball to the on-running Holly Twomey. The number 9 took her time
and slotted home despite pressure from the chasing defenders. Though the
game finished 5-1 it could have been worse for Ballinhassig and Youghal
can be rightly proud of their display. Again, the defence of Niamh Roche,
Sarah Roche, Katie Manning and Emily Roche gave little away while
Ellen Benaim, Rachel Galvin, Claire Keniry and Rachel Geary were
superb across midfield. Youghal have now scored 11 goals in four games
and can be thankful to have a great attck with Holly Twomey, Rebecca
Kearns, Amy Benaim and Aoife Sullivan.
Club notes! - Under 19’s.
It is with regret the club had to make a difficult decision to withdrawn our
under 19 team from the league due to the lack of committed players.
However this is not only a Youghal problem it is a league issue as many
teams of this age group have been withdrawn in recent weeks both in the
premier division and in lower leagues. The league needs to address this as
a matter of urgency as it is next to impossible to keep a group of U19’s
focused and committed for 20 games plus during a season including cup
games.
All weather pitch!; This has become a serious issue after a tear was found
in the carpet due to players wearing studs, multi studs and blades while
training on this surface. From now on ALL persons using this facility will
have to adhere to strict and enforced rules of wearing the correct foot
ware. Under no circumstances are metal studs, multi studs or blades to be
worn. The proper all weather shoes or runners are to be used and the committee
will be doing spot checks and anyone found to be not wearing the
correct foot ware will be asked to leave the playing surface. Signage will
be erect in the coming week and there should be no excuse or exception
for anyone.
Youghal C.Y.M.S Snooker
Report Lee Walsh
A large crowd was present at the Youghal C.Y.M.S on Friday the 24th of
February as an action packed evening of snooker was played out. The
evening began with the finals of The Kevin Power junior tournament and
The Irish Life junior tournament which were played on the championship
tables. The climax of both tournaments which were played over the past
couple of weeks brought Ross Bulman up against Keane McCarthy and
Kenny White against Conor Kennedy.
Ross Bulman won what was a very exciting first frame, Keane showed
great determination to bounce back and go ahead early on in the second
but Ross through great safety play and shot choice brought the frame to
the last ball before potting a pressure black with the extended rest to
claim the 'Kevin Power' trophy.
On table one Conor Kennedy the defending champion was up against it
facing Irish International Kenny Wight. Conor was first out of the blocks
potting some great balls to take the first frame, he picked up where he left
off in the second frame and through his good positional play he retained
the title of 'Irish Life' Champion. Congratulations to all four finalists and
all other participants.
Thanks to Hon.Vice President Brendan Cooney and Reece Roche who
acted as referees and also to Ray Phelan who had the tables in top condition.
Brendan encouraged the juniors after the finals saying the more you
play and support the better the chance you have to be selected on a team
and with the Cork U-17 Snooker Team Championship approaching there
will be many hoping to be picked to play for one of the Youghal C.Y.M.S
teams. There will also be a snooker blitz held in the society on Friday the
2nd of March at 5 o'clock in preparation for this tournament which will
be held in the Youghal C.Y.M.S on March 10th/11th.
Later that night the final of The Richard Swayne Memorial Senior
Snooker Tournament was held in the society. The final brought two team
players up against each other with 'A' team player Adrian Landers facing
'B' team player William Kelly. The audience watched as the president,
William Kelly took the title in this very important annual tournament
which was set up in memory of the late Richard Swayne and always
proves to be an exciting tournament. Congratulations to both players on
reaching the final and thanks to Patrick Kelly who acted as referee on the
night.
Congratulations to Brendan Cooney who recently won the Paddy Joyce
Memorial Snooker Tournament beating fellow team player Ian Hennessy
in the final.
Congratulations to Ricky
Update February 2012
An Bord Pleanála’s decision is pending regarding the appeal to planning
permission granted by Cork County Council to Eras Eco Ltd., to transport,
store and treat 30,000 tonnes p.a. of hazardous waste in Youghal.
During the appeal procedure An Bord Pleanala invited some statutory
bodies (under Section 131 of the Planning & Development Act 2000) to
make observations. The deadline for these observations was 21/2/2012.
Having analysed all available documentation and information on which
the original planning approval was based, BEAG compiled an extensive
report. As a result, a number of concerns with the planning application,
technology, legislation and implementation process were identified.
Copies of this report were circulated to Youghal Town Council, Cork
County Council, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), Fáilte
Ireland, Inland Fisheries, Heritage Council, An Taisce and other relevant
parties. Copies were also sent to all local Councillors, local TD’s and the
Minister for the Environment.
We would urge everyone to familarise themselves with the contents of our
report. A hard copy is available to view in Youghal Library, it can be
viewed on our website www.beag2011.com or on our Facebook page
(Blackwater Estuary Action Group)
BEAG would like to sincerely thank the community for the very generous
support and encouragement at our bag packing fundraiser at Brookes’
Super Valu Youghal on Friday 10th Feb. Thanks also to Ken Brookes,
Management and Staff for facilitating us on the day.
RED CROSS YOUGHAL BRANCH AGM
On Mon. evening the 20th.Feb. 2012 the Youghal Branch of the Red
Cross held its AGM at Shalom House. Present at the meeting were the
following. John Godfrey, Leslie Godfrey, June Arnott, Nora Beattie,
Ber O'Mahoney, Thomas Bermingham, Kim Twohig, Denis Twomey,
and Kay Donnelly. There were also four potential new members.
Apologies were received from Eileen Kiely, Sheila Kenneally, Joy Bryan
and Angela Kearns
The meeting was formally opened by John Godfrey the Chairman who
welcomed all present and thanked the outgoing officers for the work they
had done for the previous year. He also praised all the members who
helped out in any way during the year, whether through collecting at the
Church Gate or helping at the blood bank or helping in the community.
The minutes of last years AGM were read signed and passed. The hon.
secretary June Arnott then gave her report for the year which included the
attendance at Cork Area Meetings of two delegates from Youghal. The
hon.treasurer, Leslie Godfrey next gave her report which was circulated
to those in attendance. Kay Donnely complimented both the hon.sec. and
the hon. treas. on their comprehensive and well presented reports.
The next item on the agenda was the election of committee and officers.
Denis Twomey took over the chair for the interim. The result of the election
was as follows:
CHAIRMAN JOHN GODFREY; VICE-CHAIRPERSON BER O'MA-
HONEY; Hon. Sec. JUNE ARNOTT; Hon. Treas. LESLIE GODFREY;
PRO. KAY DONNELLY
Committee NORA BEATTIE(area delegate) EILEEN KIELY, SHEILA
KENNEALLY, JOY BRYAN, ELAINE MULCAIRE, KIM TWOHIG.
The chairman next welcomed Denis Twomey to the meeting and asked
him to say a few words. Denis said he was delighted to be invited to
Youghal and that he always looks forward to attending the AGM there.
He thanked all the officers and members for the voluntary work they
accomplished during the year and congratulated them for keeping the flag
flying. He said the Red Cross had come through a rough patch during
which adverse publicity had led to a drop in donations. Now all that is
behind us and new procedures have been put in place to ensure it does not
happen again, Denis said he hopes we are on the road to rebuilding the
good reputation we had . As a result of the drop in donations the present
fleet of ambulances will have to last another few years.
He also spoke about some impending food crises in Africa which could
be avoided with early intervention. He wished the branch good luck for
the coming year and hopes to see everyone again in 12 months.
With John Godfrey back in the chair the meeting moved on to" Any other
business".
A discussion was held regarding updating members Hand Care certs. It
was decided to try and get an instructor to come to Youghal as there were
about 10 people interested in doing the course. One of the guests at the
meeting asked if there was any chance of setting up a Unit in Youghal so
that young peole could be trained in First Aid and be given the opportunity
to put into practice what they had learned. It was agreed that some
information would need to be gathered regarding when an Instructors
course would be available, suitable premises for practising, and what kind
of numbers are interested. Hopefully this information will be available at
the next meeting which was set for March 5th at Shalom House The
chairman closed the meeting and all present partook in refreshments
which included homebaking from several members.
Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Red Cross should contact
any of the committee members.
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL FEBRUARY MEETING
By Christy Parker
Attending were Town Manager Patricia Power, Town Clerk Liam Ryan,
Deputy Town Clerk Helen Mulcahy, Town Engineer Paul Murray, Town
Foreman Ger Lupton, Mayor Eoin Coyne (FF) and Cllrs Barbara Murray
(FG), Michael Beecher (FG), Michelle Hennessy (SF), Eoin Flanagan
(SF), Liam Burke (Green Party) Tara O'Connell (Lab), Sammy Revins
(FF) and Mary Linehan-Foley (FF).
The meeting was preceded by a presentation from John Jermyn and Kevin
Egan of Jermyn Egan Landscape Consultants on the Northern Gateway
project -a five-year master plan for the R634 Rhincrew Roundabout to
Greencloyne. See elsewhere in this issue for report.
Report of Town Clerk on matters arising since the January meeting
of Youghal Town Council held on 10th January, 2012
1. Boardwalk at Claycastle:
Stephen Byrne Plant Hire and Civil Engineering Contractors have completed
the construction of the 378 linear meters of Boardwalk at
Claycastle. The value of the completed project is €277,000. Local contractors
will now carry out small tie in works at both a) the promenade
end and b) at the Claycastle end to ensure full disabled access to the
Boardwalk. All the documentation relating to Phase 2 of the Project
(Claycastle to Redbarn) has now been completed and is being forwarded
to Cork County Council who are the authority in control of Phase 2. That
section is 1200 linear meters in length and has an estimated cost of
€1,136,000 including VAT. This section will require about 250 meters of
railings at both ends with rock armour where required along the route. It
will require funding from Failte Ireland (75% = €852,000) and Cork
County Council (25% = €284,000). Both Failte Ireland and Cork County
Council are aware of the costs involved and appear from initial soundings
very interested in completing the project. The completion of this Project
would be a significant boost to Tourism in Youghal and would be another
significant infrastructure project for the town. The linking of the
Quality Hotel and Holiday homes would add commercially to the Town.
2. The Northern Gateway Project:
A presentation was made to the Council today by Jermyn and Egan,
Landscape architects of the master design plan for the R634 from
Rhincrew Roundabout on the N25 to the Greencloyne roundabout. The
Plan straddles three Local Authority areas namely, Waterford County
Council, Cork County Council and Youghal Town Council and is a concerted
effort on behalf of the Town to get joined up thinking between
three authorities regarding a very important approach road to the town.
Historically both County Councils have neglected this area and it has
been left to the Town Council to formulate this Master Plan. I will be
arranging meetings shortly with both County Authorities providing them
with copies of the plans, requesting financial support for an immediate
implementation plan on a phased basis. This plan has the potential to significantly
alter and upgrade the northern gateway to the Town into an
attractive and inviting entrance, which will significantly aid commercial
interest in the Town.
3. Issuing of the 2012 Rate Demands:
The 2012 Rate demands issued last week to all commercial property
interests in Youghal. The Rate Collector is available to discuss phased
payment plans whether weekly, monthly or quarterly with all rate payers
and we would actively encourage early interventions with the Rate
Collector in this regard.
Congratulations:
Cllr Revins asked if "rules and regulations" should be posted at the new
boardwalk, particularly in lieu of the ever-present scourge of dog fouling,
litter. Not just that, he added but somebody had travelled it on a motorbike
the previous Sunday. That aside, he saw the boardwalk as "a fantastic
asset," reporting that he had already met people travelling to Youghal
specifically because it rendered a walk by the beach so comfortable and
attractive. "Nobody whatsoever is knocking it," he proceeded before exuberantly
adding, perhaps unwisely: "It's the first time in my 20 years in
the council that we have done something absolutely right!" He also welcomed
the Northern Gateway project and council's recent correspondence
to rate payers.
For a while the members shared a serenade to the virtues of the new
boardwalk. Cllr. Murray had seldom heard "such positivity" about anything
in the town. She had me an elderly couple, resistant to soft sand,
who had not 'walked the beach' for 20 years prior to the wooden wonder.
She believed the council should "step back" from rules and observe how
things developed on what she termed "the most sociable walk in
Youghal."
Just as matters seemed to have reach a peak of romance, Mayor Eoin
Coyne revealed that the first marriage proposal had already been made on
the walkway by, he reported Alan Fox and Louise Cronin (It was accepted
by the way! Pheww!!) Cllr Burke said the walkway was one of
Youghal Town Council's most successful ever projects, with "literally
thousands" of people having already walked it and marvelled that there
had once been objections to its construction. He suggested an official
opening ceremony and "sometime in April" was agreed.
Tributes continued but the dog poo problem hung round like, well, a bad
smell. Broadening the issue, Cllr Beecher labelled it’s prevalence
throughout the town as "absolutely disgusting." Cllr Linehan-Foley said
the people most responsible were well known but didn't care. "And anyone
approaching them gets abuse," interceded Cllr. O'Connell. "We don't
have a warden working after 5 pm or weekend so maybe there is an opening
for an outside contractor?," suggested Cllr Murray.
Town manager Patricia Power lightened the mood again when she said
the Cork County Manager was very well disposed towards undertaking
Phase 2 of the boardwalk project, which will extend it to Redbarn.
However, it would be costly and public consultation would first ensue.
She added that funding would be sought from Fáilte Ireland, who seemed
supportive. She also assessed the structure as "inter-generational" and a
valuable assist for those with buggies and so on who would otherwise
have difficulty traversing the area.
Referring to dog fouling, the manager said one person might be abused
for objecting to a dog owner but if several people did so at once, the message
might get across. "They need to be isolated," she advised. Cllr
Murray concluded the discussion by reminding that the compliance and
goodwill of landowners on the Phase 2 route should be acknowledged.
Town Foreman's Report:
Cllr Burke asked whether the restoration work on the diving rocks was
ready to go to tender. The town engineer said tenders would be sought
from the next week. The councillor also sought an update on a previous
concern regarding a "dangerous, protruding" wall between the tennis
court and the Strand church. Mr. Murray said he was investigating it. Cllr
Burke asked whether Quarry Vale would soon be taken in charge by the
council and was told it would be checked out.
Cllr Hennessy said people at Bawnmore (back of golf links) wanted
hedge clippings "left in a bundle" removed before someone ignited them.
She said a similar situation existed at Raheen Park. Cllr Murray had
received two phone calls regarding a wall being built on the Golf Links
Road but was informed that planning permission had been granted for the
work.
Cllr Linehan-Foley thanked the town clerk for repair work to the roadside
at Tallow Street that was causing burst tyres. The councillor wondered if
anyone could be contacted regarding a development, again in Bawnmore,
where people engaging in possibly "undesirable" behaviour were moving
large, gate-like barriers to gain entry, resulting in the barriers liable to fall
on someone. The town clerk said that the developer had gone into liquidation
and a mixture of receivership and NAMA now had possession.
Probation services
Mayor Eoin Coyne reminded that recent IBAL litter survey had highlighted
a bad litter problem on the passage way from the GAA club to
Blackwater heights and wondered what could be done to alleviate illegal
dumping there. IBAL had erroneously indicated the area was the GAA's
responsibility rather than the council's, he added. The town manager said
the probation services were willing to engage with local authorities on
such community work as rubbish litter removal. Several other areas in
Youghal could benefit similarly, she added.
The town clerk said a resident from a neighbouring estate had frequently
cleared rubbish from that area as had the council. Various individuals
were voluntarily working to maintain the area, he proceeded, before
blaming the situation on "a small minority of people not respecting the
areas in which they live." Cllr Linehan-Foley re-joined that people from
outside the area had been observed ferrying their rubbish to dump it there,
thwarting the efforts of locals to keep the place tidy.
Locked in:
Cllr Flanagan requested a sign be posted at the graveyard gates indicating
closing times, with the caretaker's phone number included, as people were
being locked in from time to time. Cllr O'Connell said she had also been
approached on the issue. She also claimed that a young family had been
locked into the playground at a minute past five recently before being rescued
with the help of a passer-by. Also, she added, the residents of
Quain's Terrace wanted their grass cut which, they claimed, had "not been
cut for six or seven months." The foreman doubted the timespan but he
would tend to it.
The mayor pointed out that a sign near the Greencloyne nursing home
indicated that Youghal was a 'disc parking' town, leading to people asking
for the round devices in shops! While Youghal has paid on-street parking
it does not have discs, he explained.
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL FEBRUARY MEETING
Cork County Council Items:
The town engineer repeated that the diving rocks tenders were ready to be
launched. He said the contractors for the main street resurfacing would be
returning in a week to address any residual "snags," and to ensure disabled
spaces were indicated and to clear a gully at Niall Street.
Disability buses
Furthermore, the engineer revealed. Bus Éireann was keen to locate a
suitable stopping point for it’s new disability-friendly buses, which would
require a wide disembarking area. The post office was fine for the Cork-
Waterford route but they intended moving the stop slightly at O'Brien's
Place (Green Park) for the return journey. There was general agreement
that O'Brien's place was too removed from the town centre and was
already congested with the Bunscoil traffic. Cllr Hennessy suggested the
area approximate to the town hall be adapted instead. Mr. Murray agreed
to investigate that option. Cllr Murray said the buses required "a much
longer lead -in" to their stopping point and believed the bus stop at the
post office will have to be moved a little forward too. Cllr Burke asked if
the engineer had addressed another protruding wall, at the top of the
Lighthouse Hill, which he had mentioned previously. Mr. Murray had not,
but said he would. The councillor then recited the monthly, "usual broken
footpaths," aka Tallow Street, South Main Street and the Junction of
South Abbey/Strand Street.
Footpaths, drains, bins, roads
Cllr Beecher said the footpaths on Tallow Street "need to be risen" to prevent
parking thereon. He wondered too if a bollard at the Quarry Road
roundabout, which had been damaged by a bus some time ago, was to be
replaced. Cllr Murray pointed out that a sod at the athletic club needed reinstating
after being dug up by the water-metering services. She said
beach cleaning was needed at Claycastle, and the dog-poo bins emptied.
The councillor said she had been asked -on the boardwalk at that- why it
had taken a week rather than "half a day" for council workers to clear a
drain at Golf Links Road. "It was observed by a number of people," she
explained somewhat ominously. She was told that while the road work
signage remained, the workers had had to depart mid-task due to a water
break elsewhere, but the engineer would investigate anyway. Cllr Murray
also reported a blocked drain at Paradise Alley but the engineer said he
had found no problem with it.
Cllr Linehan-Foley complained about a broken footpath and a missing
water main section across from Clancy's pub was a hazard to pedestrians.
Cllr Hennessy said a new car space at the bottom of Cork Hill was too
close to descending traffic turning towards town, a sunken eircom box at
South Main Street was a trip hazard and the poop bins at Claycastle were
overflowing. She then asked when the remedial work would begin on the
flood-prone road at Clonpriest. Mr. Murray said it required a spring being
diverted but he would address it shortly under the 2012 budget.
Amalgamated Municipal Authorities of Ireland (A.M.A.I)
Conference September 2013:
Youghal's deficiencies as a major conference centre were starkly illustrated
here when it was agreed that the town simply doesn't have enough bed
spaces within a central location to cater for a conference of this size.
Correspondence received in relation to transfer of Youghal
Lighthouse to Youghal Town Council:
While donating the lighthouse free of charge to the council, the
Commission of Irish Lights (CIL) had reported that the compound's
adjoining residential property and garden was valued at €245,000, "at current
market rates." This was deemed "off the wall" by Cllr Murray, who
wondered if they had estimated "the Taj Mahal" instead!
Cllr O'Connell said the council should acquire an independent estimation
with a view to purchasing the premises as a tourism/heritage enterprise.
"We hold the trump card regarding any future planning applications
there," she added. Cllr Murray suggested that leasing was viable if it was
set at a nominal rate of about €100 per annum. She envisaged the property
being used as a waiting area for tourists visiting the lighthouse. She felt
the Commission wanted to retain the property as holiday home for it’s
own personnel and that the valuation was set deliberately high to discourage
the council.
Cllr Linehan-Foley favoured a reasonable lease arrangement and viewed
the compound as an ideal 'coffee-stop' en route to the Front Strand. Cllr
Revins saw a potential for a 'lighthouse trail' enterprise, especially given
the fascination for lighthouses in the tourist sector.
The town clerk summarised that Youghal had "no choice" in assuming
ownership of the lighthouse, but the adjoining property was not automatically
part of the package. He supported acquiring an independent valuation
before considering any options or making a response to the
Commission.
Local Government Reform:
Having perused a copy of Environment Minister Phil Hogan's recent
address to the Seanad, it was agreed that the minister's resolution on the
future of town councils remained uncertain. The speech had indicated,
perhaps, devolved powers to county councils; or then again, maybe not.
Cllr Revins said county councils could not properly govern towns. He
advised that town councils represented local democracy but that the government
had weakened that democracy by reducing councils' revenuemaking
potential and power. "Town councils have to stand up for this
form of democracy. Every town deserves to have a council," he urged.
"Local knowledge is very important, supported Cllr Murray.
Cllr Linehan-Foley recalled Minister Hogan addressing an AMAI conference
some years ago and stoutly defending town councils and vowing to
support them. Yet now he seemed to be singing a different song. She said
Youghal Town Council should at least officially register it’s insistence
with the government that the council should be retained. She also asked
what money would be saved from scrapping the €56 per week wage of a
town councillor. "People may blame us for things and that's fine. But who
are they going to turn to if we are not there?" she asked.
The town clerk wondered whether, if town councils had been abolished a
decade ago, Youghal would have acquired the Aura Leisure Centre, the
Enterprise Centre, Realm Plan and of course the boardwalk. And who
might provide similar in the future, he pondered, particularly given the
level of service indicated by the County Council's apathy towards the
Waterford entrance to the town. It was agreed to discuss the issue again
through a motion at March's meeting.
2012 Regional and Local Road Grant Allocation:
Mr Ryan said the sum allocated was, as had been in 2011, €195,000. The
engineer would undertake estimates, with priority for Upper and middle
Knockaverry and Nealon's Quay car park. All needy areas would be
priced and thereafter the councillors could vote on them.
Unresolved Motions:
The mayor said the viewing areas at Moll Goggin's were now eyesores
and he wasn't happy with the county council's approach to the situation.
Cllr Murray was supported in advocating that the furthermost viewing
area be closed permanently by a wall extension but the other area be
restored. She would consult the relevant county engineer on it.
Any Other Business:
Cllr Hennessy referred to a file comprised by BEAG, the group strongly
opposing the proposed treatment of hazard waste at the Eras Eco Ltd site,
Foxhole. She drew attention to the group's contention that they had been
allowed to make a submission to Bord Pleanála's appeal process and
BEAG's insistence that Youghal Town Council, as a statutory body, could
still do likewise.
The town clerk, in response said that 'the second schedule of the Planning
& development Act 2000, Section 5 (1)c refers directly to the rules for the
determination of the amount of compensation in respect of planning and
does not relate to the making of an appeal to An Bord Pleanála." He said
he had provided councillors with a copy of the entire Second Schedule,
headed 'Rules for the Determination of the Amount of Compensation,'
along with a copy of "'An Bord Pleanála' case file which clearly lists the
parties involved" and also "a copy of 'An Bord Pleanála's Guide to
Making a Planning Appeal,' which clearly sets out the appeal process as
laid down by the Bord" and under which process Youghal Town Council
"does not fit in at this stage," he concluded.
Cllr Murray pointed out that Youghal Town Council seemed markedly
absent from a list of stated supporters that included Fáilte Ireland, Irish
wildlife protection agencies and several others. To general agreement, she
wanted it known that Youghal's town councillors also supported BEAG's
stance. "It's just that our hands are tied," voiced Cllr Hennessy. "That has
been the case all along, echoed Cllr Linehan-Foley, adding "it's all lies"
to say we are hiding something or don't want to make submissions."
The meeting concluded by revealing that there would be no bed losses at
Youghal Community Hospital. The HSE had taken into account that the
hospital had a constant waiting list of seven applicants. Additionally,
work would be conducted on a dining room and oratory. Nonetheless, she
advised, there had been no staff recruitment since 2008 and if staff numbers
continued to fall, then beds closures could follow.
The town clerk indicated (in sentiments that would be echoed by
Midleton Cllr Ted Murphy later that day), that there was now a policy
towards centralising services away from towns like Youghal throughout
the country. "That's not going to achieve efficiency, but the opposite," he
berated. "There are question marks relating to the District hospital and St.
Raphael's hospital he, continued, "as a policy is being rolled out by central
government" across several departments."
GROUND BREAKING WORK
Christy Parker talks to Barry Walsh on the groundwork preparations
for Aura Leisure Centre wind turbine.
The eye-catching new wind turbine standing proud against the skyline at
Aura Leisure Centre is a landmark of unprecedented presence in the town.
However for local company Barry Walsh Civil Engineering Ltd, it is was
a familiar undertaking when they landed the groundwork contract for the
structure's installation.
The Youghal firm beat four out-of-town competitors to the tender from
Bandon-based installation company windturbines.ie, last November. "I
think our experience with wind turbine installation probably swung it for
us, "says Barry. "We've worked on several wind turbine schemes in recent
times, such as the Boggerah Mountain wind farm in north Cork and a similar
one in Castleisland, Co. Kerry."
The Aura turbine was funded through a €400,000 grant acquired by
Youghal Town Council from the Department of Tourism and Sport last
year. Purchased in Denmark and transported in three sections, it is expected
to meet up to two-thirds of the centre's electricity requirements.
Peat
The project contrasted starkly with previous work undertaken by Barry's
firm in the sphere, being considerably smaller in scale and function.
However it presented it’s own, unique challenge to the five-man crew of
Youghal craftsmen who set foot on site last December. "It was quite complex
for a couple of reasons," Barry explains. "Firstly the schedule was
tight as we only had about three weeks to do the job. Secondly, the ground
is basically peat and water so we had to dig very deep to facilitate the base
work."
Having constructed the road into the site, the workers then excavated a
base 8½ square metres to a depth of five metres. "We lined it with a terram
lining, back filled and compacted it with stone," Barry details. "Then
we undertook the steel and concrete work for the base, having completed
the shuttering. That also involved the fixing of the holding down bolts to
the column section of the base. We also ran the ducting into the leisure
centre," he adds.
Degree
Barry, 32, was educated in Gortroe National School and CBS Youghal,
before undertaking a three year course in quantity surveying at Cork
Institute of Technology, followed by a graduation year at Limerick's
equivalent, which brought him an honours degree in 2002. "That gave me
a background in pricing and so on," he explains.
Then, seven years ago he established Barry Walsh Civil Engineering Ltd,
which currently employs three full time workers. The company undertakes
a wide variety of projects, from the aforementioned wind farms to
road bypasses, drainage schemes and onto simpler, residential tasks. "At
the moment we are also diversifying into septic tank renovation," Barry
reveals.
Living in Ballyclamsy, recessionary times mean he has to travel quite a
bit to fulfil contracts. It's as well that he loves his work. "Yeah I do," he
smiles. "Every day is a fresh challenge. I always try to better myself," he
proceeds. "And it's a great feeling to walk away from a successful job,
knowing that we have completed it to the very best of our ability and that
the client is happy."
Meanwhile in recent weeks, windurbines.ie has attached the 75 kilowatt
turbine itself to the base secured by Barry's team. It stands, some 70
metres from the centre, an impressive 23 metres tall, with blades, 8.5m
each measuring 17 metres in circumference. Aura Leisure Centre manager
Tracy Kenneally says it will commence operating next month. Thanks
to Barry Walsh's help, it should be more than a breeze…
Youghal Pigeon Club
The members of Youghal Pigeon club decided to hold pigeon shows over
the winter months as there is no racing at this time of year, members
would meet, show their birds and have a chat in the club house.
A series of 5 shows were held with a total of 300 birds taking part over
the 5 weeks. The judging of the birds was carried out by fanciers from
Cork and Waterford, all reporting a very high standard in Youghal.
The overall winner of the shows was Paddy Aherne, winning 2 firsts and
a third. Paddy has kept pigeons all of his life and is well known throughout
the country with several national and Munster titles to his name. In
second place was Timmy Fitzgerald also winning 2 firsts and a fourth
place, followed by Paddy and Angela Kelly in third.
The money raised from entering the birds was donated by the club to
U8 and U10
Our U8 and U10 training began last Thursday evening in the GAA clubhouse.
It was a great start to the season with great enthusiasm and great
fun. U8 training is from 5pm-5:45pm and U10 training takes place from
6pm-6:45pm each Thursday evening. All new players welcome.
U14
Inch Rovers U14A played their third round game of the league against
Bride Rovers last week. Weather conditions made for tough playing conditions.
Inch started off very strongly and had the upper hand at half time
on a scoreline of Inch 3-4 Bride Rovers 2-4. We had the wind at our backs
in the second half but Bride Rovers never gave up and brought it to within
one point with five minutes to go. The girls determination however saw
us finish out winners on a scoreline of 5-7 to 4-5. Great win for the girls.
Our next league game is scheduled for March 10th against Rockban.
U16
Under 16 training continues weekly. Thanks to Ballyphehane for a challenge
match on the 15th of February it was a great start for the season
ahead. An enjoyable match which gave all the girls a chance to play. The
under 16's will play the first league match against fermoy next weekend.
Junior/Senior
Training continues each Tuesday and Friday evening at 7:30pm. First
round of junior and senior leagues begin March 19th. All new members
welcome.

Youghal Cycling Club
On Sunday, three different groups hit the road. The 9.00am group, the
10.00am group and of course, the racing group who headed to Kerry for
the day for the opening race of the season and probably on one of the
hardest circuits in the country !!
The racing team of Eoin Whyte and new boys, Jonathan Tobin and Wayne
Fitzgerald had an early start to Kerry with both Jonathan and Wayne pinning
on their race numbers for the first time. Eoin rode in the A3 category
with JT and WF both lining out in the A4 category. As usual, a blistering
pace ensued on the mountainious parcours but both JT and WF held
their own in the peloton. Eoin on the other hand was sticking it to the big
boys in the A3 group. As the race progressed the groups were decimated
on the climbs. Both JT and WF found their own rhythm and groups while
Eoin made the selection with the A1 and A2 groups over the last climb.
Two riders went clear on the final run with Sean Lacey making it four
wins out of four. Eoin followed shortly in the next group to finish a fine
15th overall and both Jonathan and Wayne followed a few minutes later
in the next groups. All three in fact were showered and changed while
there was still riders crossing the line as well as cresting the final climb.
Well done to all who represented themselves and their club proudly on the
day.
Weekend Spins.
As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every Sunday
morning at 9.00 am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock
Gate. This group is usually split into two groups with both covering a similar
distance of 80 to 100km but at different speeds. This spin which runs
on various routes every week usually takes between 4 to 5 hours ( weather
permitting ).The pace is comfortable for each group and we usually
stop half way around for a coffee or tea.
A third group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning at
10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This
spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes around 3
hours to complete and covers on average between 30 to 40km. The pace
is again very comfortable. This is an ideal group for anyone interested in
taking up the sport.
New members or visitors to the area are always welcome. If you have any
questions about the club or attending one of our weekend spins, please
contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292 for details. See you
all Sunday Morning !!. Until next week, safe cycling !!.
Youghal Athletic Club News
We have had another few busy weeks on the running front as you can see
from the results below. It was great to see Youghal jerseys competing as
far away as Kenmare. I would like to wish speedy recoveries to a few of
our athletes - Slyvie (who will not spend money on a physio), Eddie (who
cannot bear pain) and Mary O' (who is waiting for better prizes later in the
year).
Our Winter league finished last Thursday night with a few people putting
in PB's on the night, especially Gordan "Lightfoot". It was another great
success and well done to Michael Whyte for his organisation and timekeeping.
Our club captains for the coming year are Male - John Malone
and Female - Rikki Devareaux.
Eochaill Og GAA Notes
Saturday 11.02.12 - Venue: Club Aras - U/13 Football League.
Eochaill 0 - 03 Cobh 7 – 05
On Saturday the 11th the Cobh team came to Club Aras to play the opening
game of the U/13 Football League. On a very wet & windy day,
Youghal took to the field with only twelve players available. Against a
strong wind and giving Cobh the advantage of three additional players,
Youghal found it difficult to compete and trailed 6 - 03 to a single point
at half time.On resumption of the second half, Youghal’s player tally
increased from twelve to fourteen. This gave a better reflection on both
team’s abilities with the scoring by both sides more evenly balanced than
that witnessed in the first half. The Youghal players gave their all, getting
on a lot more ball than they did in the first half and keeping the score to
two points apiece for most of the thirty minutes. With three minutes left
Youghal had a goal by Rory McMahon disallowed and were unfortunate
when Cobh scored a last minute goal. Scorers for Youghal on the day
were Dion O’Donoghue 0 – 01 and Conor Walsh 0 – 02. After playing
their hearts out the selectors could not have asked or expected much
more. The game finished Youghal 0 – 03 to Cobh 7 – 05.
Team: Oran Hennessey, Jack McGrath, Liam Forrest(c), Killian Cahill,
Friday 17.02.12 - Venue: Club Aras - U/14 Football League.
Eochaill 3 - 05 Bride Rovers 4 – 05
Friday night under lights Youghal played Bride Rovers in what was a
great game off football.
Both teams played some great football in the first half with Bride Rovers
making use of their possession better with two very well taken goals that
gave the Youghal goalkeeper Liam Mariga no chance. Youghal had some
goal chances but kept hitting straight at the Bride Rovers goalkeeper.
Half time Bride Rovers led by 2 – 02 to Youghal 1 - 03
In the second half the game continued at the same pace as the first.
Youghal had most of the possession but Bride Rovers continued to make
better use of theirs. Jack Monaghan, Conor Walsh, Leon Coady and Fionn
Cliffe all had good games for Youghal, but best on the night were Rian
McSweeney, Zach Downing and Jordan Yellop, who scored 2 - 02 from
play. Other Youghal scorers were, Conor Walsh 0 - 01 and Leon Coady 1
– 02.
The game finished Youghal 3 - 05 to Bride Rovers 4 - 05
Team: Liam Mariga, Jack Nolan, Liam Forrest, Killian Cahill, Jack
Eochaill 6 - 13 Blarney 0 – 01
On Saturday the 19th of Feb we played our 2nd league game at home to
Blarney a team who beat us last year in the league play-offs. It was a
bright sunny but windy and cold afternoon. Jason Murphy our captain for
the day won the toss and we played with the aid of a very strong wind for
the first half. We started very lively and had some great scores within the
first 10 minutes. We got a goal after about 12 minutes and then the flood
gates opened where our forwards seemed to score at will, ably assisted
by the mid-fielders and half backs. We went in at the break 3-11 to no
score ahead.
We knew against the strong wind in the second half Blarney would come
out all guns blazing but our backs stood up to the test and we scored
another 3-5 in the 2nd half, all in all a good display by the lads who finished
off Blarney when the opportunity was there. We introduced 4 subs
just after half time and all did well when they came on. Our left half forward
Dale Donoghue was our man of the match finishing with a personnel
tally of 2 goals and 6 points. A great result on the day, so well done to
all. Final score Eochaill 6-13 Blarney 0-1.
Youghal U12’s had their first game of the season on Thursday, 23rd
February at Club Áras. Their opponents, Midleton. With a throw in at
7.00pm, it was both teams first game of hurling played under lights. With
the new rules of maximum 11 a side games, both Youghal and Midleton
fielded two teams. After a two-month break over the winter, it was
expected that the game would be slow and mistake ridden. The opposite
was the case. Both teams went at it like it was an All Ireland Final. Brian
Coady would have been impressed such was the ferocity of the game.
Both Midleton &Youghal know the importance of pulling on the club jersey
and boy, they did it proud. After nearly an hour of fast paced hurling,
both Youghal teams ran out easy victors. Given that Midleton are regarded
as one of the top teams in Cork, the lads can be justifiably proud.
Youghal Team A: Conor Clohessey, Tiernan McCarthy, Seán Flavin, Jake
Cooper, Ben Dalton, Dion O’Donoghue, Peter Kirk, Fionn Hagon, Liam
Jnr Football Lge Div 2 rnd 3 Fr.O Neills 0:07 v Midleton 0:05
We recorded our second win of this years league campaign with a hard
fought win over Midleton. On a damp day which led to greasy under foot
conditions a low scoring game was always on the cards and so it proved
with the first score coming 9 minutes into the game, both sides were guilty
of some very poor finishing with the half time score of 3pts a piece a fair
reflection of proceedings up to then,a feature of the first half was the tackling
and commitment shown by both teams with no quarter being asked
or given. The 2nd half was to go the same way as the first with both teams
making basic mistakes when in a scoring position which led to possesion
being lost on numerous occasions by both sets of forwards,as the half
went on it was evident to the good size crowd present that the team that
was to avail of a couple of the many scoring chances that were being created
by both sides would win the game, with our lads sensing this it wasn't
long before we got our noses in front and closed out the game with two
late frees,a noteable feature of the game was the fitness levels shown by
both teams and a willingness to work hard when not in possesion of the
football.
Youghal Ladies Rugby
Fermoy V Youghal - February 12th 2012
Youghals lionhearted ladies continue their unbeaten run with a fierce
feat versus Fermoy
Youghals enthusiasm was evident from the off as their lively winger Lucy
Barry got the opening try as the referees whistle still echoed in the
Fermoy sides grounds. The side didn’t hesitate to further increase their
lead with Sinead Fitzgeralds experience and patience proved rewarding to
bring the sides score to double digits. Fermoys fearsome forwards did
however punish Youghals defiant defence and dent the score-line when
their sturdy strong running number 8 touched down which was converted
by the sides competent fly half bringing the score to a tense Fermoy-7,
Youghal-10. Sinead Fitzgerald did not let the sides momentary break in
composure cause the side angst receiving her second try of the day when
she touched down with conviction following a death defying stretch to the
try line. What transpired was a frustrating first half for Youghal that was
littered with handling errors. This hindered the fluency of the game and
would have disappointed the unmistakably stronger side to lead by such a
lowly margin.
The first notable occurrence in the second half was completed by the talented
Tamar Jayawardene when she gained the sides bonus point touching
down a try which was in truth created by the speedy backlines bursts
in play. (Fermoy-7, Youghal-20) Fermoy reliant again on their hefty pack
gained another converted try leaving the score uncomfortably close as the
game neared completion, but up stood daring Deirdre Cronin with her
resilience to nerves and clinched the sides final try leaving the gutsy
Youghal side grateful of a continued unbeaten run. The victorious side
were left dejected following the injury of two skilled players, Kate
Sheehan and Lucy Barry. Both the side and supporters will be keen to see
them recover.
Best for Youghal: Ciara O’ Flaherty and Deirdre Fitzgerald worked
together effortlessly throughout and their work rate was inspiring. Sinead
Fitzgerald completed as exceptional performance when playing confidently
out of position and to her credit gaining two tries.
Team: A. Ni lionsaigh, C. Griffen, K. Gillman, S. Fitzgerald, K. O’
Mahoney, C. O’Flaherty, A. O’ Flaherty, T. Jayawardene, L. Barry, S.
Hogan (Capt), K. Sheehan, D. Cronin.
YOUGHAL LADIES ANNIHILATE THE HIGH-
LY CREDITED DUNGARVAN SIDE
Youghal-42 Dungarvan-0 - January 15th 2012
There may have been a chill in the air at Frogmore but Youghal ladies
gave their supporters a scorching display in the sides opening game of
2012. They went into the game hell for leather with Kate Sheehan giving
the home side the opening seven points as she shimmied through the
sheepish Dungarvan defence. Fortunately Youghal didn’t hesitate in further
denting the Dungarvan oppositions aspirations of victory with the
experienced Tamar Jayawardene running in an impressive lone try from
her own half giving the home side an early 12-0 lead. Dungarvan went on
to up their intensity leaving the home side defend their own try line for
what seemed like an eternal 10minutes, Youghals ambitious forwards
hankered Dungarvans attempts with Ailbhe Ní Lionsaigh in just her second
competitive rugby game showed the composure of a pro when settling
her side by kicking to touch. Throughout Youghals simplicity too
stood to their favour when winger Deirdre Cronin received the ball following
some swift passes she accelerated up the side-line to hinder the
chances further of Dungarvan turning the tables. Youghal increased their
score by a further five points with Lucy Barry touching it down after
Youghal broke the defensive display of Dungarvans heavy duty pack.
This left the half-time score considerably in the seaside’s favour at
Youghal-22 Dungarvan-0.
Dungarvans second half display consistently lacked intensity and Youghal
were determined not to let this lack in ambition detour their desire going
on to score a further for tries from Deirdre Cronin, Tamar Jayawardene,
Kate Sheehan, Ailbhe Ní Lionsaigh. Credit to Youghal as their defence
was preserved throughout with enthusiastic play leaving the final score
Youghal-42 Dungarvan-0.
Voilá, following such a dominant display Youghal will look to capture the
magic in their next league outing.
Captain Karen O’Mahony played best for Youghal by performing faultlessly
throughout, leaving the squad looking to follow and emulate her
lead.
Team: D. Fitzgerald, C. Griffen, K. O’ Mahoney (Capt) U. Fitzgerald, C.
O’ Flaherty, A.O’ Flaherty, T. Jayawardene, S. Fitzgerald, A. Ní
CLAYCASTLE PITCH & PUTT NEWS
Civic Reception For Anthony O’Loughlin
On Thursday 16th February 2012 a Civic reception was held at the town
hall in Youghal for Anthony O'Loughlin who won the All-Ireland
Strokeplay championships in pitch and putt at a supurb Douglas course in
Cork last July. As well as achieving All-Ireland success, Anthony also
equaled the course record in his final round with a terrific score of twelve
under par which was enough to secure his first title. It was a very proud
occasion for all involved with Claycastle Pitch & Putt Club. This is the
first time in the Club's history that a player has won a national title and
for it to happen in the Club's 25th anniversary year makes it that small bit
more special.
This win also cemented Anthony a place on the Cork team alongside fellow
Claycastle player Paudie O'Sullivan who certainly did not disappoint
in the Munster Inter-County Championships and the National Inter-
County Championships as Anthony captained his county team with great
pride to victory in both events.
Anthony although having a great dedication to the game, he also has and
shows great pride in our course and works endlessly to keep the course in
the condition that it is in today and it is safe to say that without this effort
and hard work the course would not be up to a high quality standard.
Anthony who always had belief that he could go on and triumph in the
flagship event of the year, never gave up on his ambition and had full
backing and confidence from all at the club. In Anthony's speech he
thanked everyone for the encouragement and belief and said it would not
have been possible without the support and assistance shown.
With the National Matchplay Championships just months away and taking
place at our course here in Youghal over the June bank holiday weekend,
Anthony will have the opportunity to hold both national titles at the
same time should he win the event.
We look forward to a bright future and hope that this will be the first title
of many for members of our club in the years ahead.
Other News
The County Leagues have been continuing over the past few weeks with
both the Clubs Seniors and Intermediates both in action. On Sunday 19th
February our seniors traveled to Kilshannig to take on a well prepared
Collin's side and carried on their unbeaten run with a 5-4 win and also
securing a semi-final spot. On Sunday last the Seniors traveled to
Crosshaven to play their final group game against St Annes. With both
sides already through, the teams were fighting for first place in the group.
Unfortunately Claycastle lost on a scoreline of 5-4 against a strong St
Annes side and as a result Claycastle will now take on Templebreedy in
the semi-final next Sunday, while St Annes will face E.S.B. in the other
last four match. Venues are yet to be decided.
Meanwhile the County Leagues over the past few weeks have been going
very well for our Intermediates since their narrow defeat to Rocklodge a
fortnight ago. On Sunday 19th February the team traveled to Crosshaven
to face a resilient Lakewood side and came away with a fantastic victory
winning the match on a scoreline of 6.5 - 2.5. The team played their last
group game on Sunday last at Kilshannig against a strong Fermoy outfit
knowing that only a win would be enough to cement a place in the semifinals
and with Fermoy also in the hunt for a place in the last four it was
always going to be a tough game. Claycastle had a great advantage after
the fourballs with a lead of 2.5-0.5 and the team carried on their fine form
into the singles closing out the game on a scoreline of 5.5 - 3.5. This was
a fantastic win for Claycastle and secures a place in the last four of the
competition which will be played in two weeks time. We wish the best of
luck to both our Senior and Intermediate teams in the coming weeks
ahead.
Club fourballs have been continuing over the last few weeks and the
results are as follows:
Sponsored by Cal Flavins
1st Nett - Colin Sheehan, Rita Ryall; Gross - Anthony O' Loughlin, John
McCarthy; 2nd Nett - Dave Kenefick, Hannah Murphy
Sponsored by Youghal Gift Gallery
1st Nett - Seamus Murphy, Hannah Murphy; Gross - Joy Bryan, Seamus
Murphy; 2nd Nett - Rita Ryall, Ted Healy
Club fourballs continue on Wednesday next 29th February at 2pm, Friday
2nd at 2pm, Saturday 3rd at 2pm and Sunday 4th at 2pm. Presentation of
prizes will take place in the clubhouse after Sundays game.
Ladies morning continues every Wednesday at 10:30 and juvenile competitions
continue every Saturday morning at 10:30.

YOUTH SECTION
Under 17 League - Youghal 17 pts Mallow 15 pts
Our under 17's got back to winning ways at Frogmore on Saturday 11th
February when they played Mallow for vital league points. Youghal
played with the breeze in the first half and were soon camped in the visitors
22 metre area. Good running from Jason Yellop and Ross Donovan
enabled winger Barry O'Connell to score near the corner flag. The conversion
kick was narrowly missed. The seasiders were now well on top
and had 2 brilliant tries from flying full back Ronan O'Sullivan, one of
which was converted by Aiden McCarthy. Mallow to their credit battled
back to score just before half time with a well worked try from their big
set of forwards. The score was converted to leave Youghal ahead at the
short whistle by 17pts to 7.
In the second half the North Cork side had an early penalty kick to reduce
Youghals lead to 7 pts. The Mallow lads were now getting well on top
with the strong breeze at their backs and with 5 minutes left to play they
crossed Youghal's try line once again. Fortunately for Youghal the conversion
kick was missed and they played out the remainder of the match in
their opponents half. This was a somewhat lucky win for Youghal over a
plucky Mallow side but having said that the seasiders put up a brave
defensive display against bigger opponents. Best for Youghal were Aiden
O'Neill, Ronan O'Sullivan, Barry O'Connell and Todd Cronin.
Under 17 League Youghal 44 pts Dunmanway 5 pts
Our under 17's picked up another brace of league points when they made
the long journey to Dunmanway recently. The seasiders were well on top
throughout this match with tries coming at regular intervals. Youghal had
tries from Adam Malone (1), Ronan O'Sullivan (2), Ryan Coady (1), Ross
Donovan (1), Aaron Hogan (2), Jordan Power (1), while Aiden McCarthy
and Jordan Power had one conversion each.
Under 19 League - Youghal/Dungarvan 57 pts Old Christians 12 pts
Our under 19's have combined with Dungarvan for this South Munster
under 19 league competition and remain unbeaten with this big win over
Old Christians. This match was played at Frogmore on Saturday 18th
February. Conditions for rugby were good for this match with both sides
running with the ball at every opportunity. The Youghal/Dungarvan combination
were quick to settle into the game with early tries from Sean
Dunford (2), Cillian Ansbro (1) and Laurence Houlihan (2), while out half
Lee McCarthy converted all 5 tries.
In the second half Old Christians came into the game a lot more and their
efforts were rewarded with 2 well worked tries. However, the home combination
of Youghal/Dungarvan once again upped the pace and had further
tries from Tomás Keevers, Alex Lai, Tom Cronin and Ronan Deegan,
the last try being converted by out half Lee McCarthy. This was another
good win for this under 19 side and they can only get better with more
training and matches. Training continues for all under age sides throughout
the week with more information available from our Youth Officer
Sean O'Neill on 087-0570202.
Also coming up on Friday 2nd March at 8pm in the clubhouse is a
fundraiser for our mini-section who are travelling to Wales shortly. All the
under age coaches have volunteered to have their heads shaved and their
bodies waxed so come along to the clubhouse on the 2nd of March for this
worthy fundraiser for our future stars.
is an adult only affair and there will be refreshments served after the
speeches.
his family and friends will be together to pay tribute to the man and the
President Christy Cooney in their own special way.
MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL
NEW AROMATIC FACIAL
1 HOUR - €45
In most countries, Mother's Day is a recent observance derived
from the holiday as it has evolved in North America and Europe.
When it was adopted by other countries and cultures, it was given
different meanings, associated to different events (religious, historical
or legendary), and celebrated in a different date or dates.
Some countries already had existing celebrations honoring motherhood,
and their celebrations have adopted several external characteristics
from the US holiday, like giving carnations and other
presents to your own mother.
The extent of the celebrations varies greatly. In some countries, it
is potentially offensive to one's mother not to mark Mother's Day.
In others, it is a little-known festival celebrated mainly by immigrants,
or covered by the media as a taste of foreign culture (compare
the celebrations of Diwali in the UK and the United States).
In the Catholic Church, the holiday is strongly associated with reverencing
the Virgin Mary.
In Hindu tradition it is called "Mata Tirtha Aunshi" or "Mother
Pilgrimage fortnight", and it is celebrated in countries with Hindu
Mother's Day is here again. It is one of the most popular
of all such days that honour relationships. Of the
many people who add value to our lives, a mother is
undoubtedly the most special. Whether it is your own
mom or someone you look up to, the basic thought
behind Mother's Day is expressing yourself to that
someone who has been with you throughout your
life.
One of the ways of letting her know that she is indeed valued by you is
by gifting her on Mother's Day (sending Mother's Day gifts, giving gifts
on this occasion). The most basic essential to be understood before going
gift shopping on Mothers Day is the personality type of your mom.
Is your mother working or a homemaker, outgoing or a homebody, loves
to travel or do gardening or maybe loves fashion or shopping every few
days. If you have analysed or observed closely her nature and preferences,
then choosing the perfect gift for her becomes easy.
MOTHER’S DAY QUOTES
Mothers are fonder than fathers of their children because they are
more certain they are their own. ~Aristotle
MOTHERS DAY IN IRELAND
In Ireland, Mothers Day is not celebrated on same day as in US.
Mothers Day celebrations in Ireland takes place on the fourth
Sunday in the Christian fasting month of Lent. This corresponds
to the day on which Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday
is celebrated in UK, a close neighbor of Ireland. While in the
US Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in the
month of May. But just as in scores of other countries, people
in Ireland honor their mothers on the occasion of Mothers Day
for all their love and affection.
HISTORY OF MOTHER'S DAY IN IRELAND
The history of celebrating Mothering Sunday or Mothers Day
in Ireland can be traced to the medieval practice where children
from poor families were send to work as domestic servants and
apprentices to work with the rich. Once in the year in the middle
of the Lent these children were given a day off to visit their
'Mother Church' and worship Virgin Mary. After visiting the
Mother Church or Cathedral of their home town these children
visited their mothers and presented them with flowers they
picked along the way. Girls bake special Mothering Cake on
the day. Pattern of living changed after the Industrial
Revolution and Mothering Sunday celebration almost lapsed.
The custom was revived after World War II. Americans too
helped to bring back the charm of the festival in Eurpoean
countries as their tradition and way of celebrating Mothers Day
spread far and wide.
MOTHER'S DAY
CELEBRATION IN
IRELAND
On Mothers Day, people in
Ireland present flowers
and cards to their mothers
to express love and gratitude.
People take their
mother out for dinners and
lunches and often pamper
them with breakfast in
bed. Gifts are given to
mothers with love from
caring children.
Programmes, plays and
skits are organised at several
places in honor of
mothers.
MOTHER’S DAY QUOTES
In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is
then burst into flame by an encounter with another human
being. We should all be thankful for those people who
rekindle the inner spirit. ~Albert Schweitzer
You can always tell a real friend: when you've made a fool
of yourself he doesn't feel you've done a permanent job.
~Laurence J. Peter
Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the
charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. ~Marcel
Chocolate Sponge Cake for
Mother’s Day
Serves: 8 Prep time: 30 mins(including cooling
time)
Cooking time: 30 mins (may need 5 mins
extra) Total time: 1 hr
Chocolate sponge cake
175g (6oz) butter, at room temperature, 3
eggs, at room temperature, 175g (6oz) caster
sugar, 175g (6oz) self-raising flour, 50g (2oz) cocoa powder, 1tsp baking
powder, ½tsp vanilla extract
For a cream and fruit filling:
125ml whipping cream, 175g raspberries or strawberries
For quick chocolate icing:
200g (8oz) icing sugar, 50g (2oz) cocoa powder, 200g (8oz) butter, 1tbsp
milk, 1tsp vanilla extract
Method
1. Grease a 20cm (8in) cake tin and line with greaseproof paper. Preheat
oven to 170°C (325°F, gas mark 3).
2. Cream the sugar and butter into a large bowl, beat until light and pale.
Add the eggs one at a time and continue to beat until you leave a trail on
the surface when the whisk is lifted (with an electric mixer, about 5 mins).
3. Sift the flour. Gently fold half the flour into the mixture. When it is well
combined, fold in the other half of the flour along with the cocoa powder
and baking powder. Stir in the vanilla extract.
4. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin.
5. Bake the chocolate sponge cake for about 30-35 mins or until a cake
skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Remove from the oven
and leave to cool. Turn out onto a wire rack and remove the greaseproof
paper.
6. Turn the chocolate sponge cake upside down so the top becomes the
bottom. Slice it horizontally and fill with whipped cream and fruit - raspberries
or strawberries work well. You can decorate the top with more
fruit. Or, for die hard chocoholics, make our quick, chocolate icing. Use
an electric whisk to beat together all the ingredients until you have a
smooth, light icing. Use half of it in the middle of the chocolate sponge
cake and the other half on top. Decorate with raspberries if you fancy.
