Introduction 

Zebra thermal desktop printers have long been recognized for innovative and 

revolutionary designs. In keeping with this tradition, Zebra is pleased offer its versatile 

LP/TLP 2844 printers. 

The 4” print-width LP 2844 direct thermal and the 4” TLP 2844 thermal transfer desktop 

label printers leverage the popular benefits of the widely installed Orion printer, while 

bringing new levels of performance to the Zebra desktop family. The addition of a 

thermal transfer model broadens the scope of application opportunities, extending to 

those where long-life, durable labels and tags are necessary.

Product Positioning 

Based on the award-winning former ‘Eltron Orion’ platform, the direct thermal LP 2844 

and thermal transfer TLP 2844 bear features and enhancements which serve to offer 

even higher quality print performance while maintaining the same ease of operation. 

The 2844 products retain the appealing look of the original Orion 2443 model, and both 

LP and TLP versions are complete with sturdy double-walled casing. The LP/TLP 2844 

is equipped with a new controller board, motor and power supply, designed to drive this 

model 60% faster than the Orion, at a print speed of 4 inches per second! And, with its 

new-generation print head for enhanced print quality and thermal transfer version for 

increased labeling applications, you have a low-cost, yet fast, efficient, easy to use, and 

easy to maintain desktop label printer ⎯ a tremendous value proposition! 

With Zebra’s OpenACCESS design, media loading is completed in seconds – the 

LP/TLP 2844s are then ready for action. All the technology required for optimum printing 

is loaded into these printers, such as flash memory, parallel, serial and USB interfaces, 

fonts, character sets and EPL2 Programming Language. 

The LP/TLP 2844 also supports a variety of options and accessories to provide versatile 

printing solutions, enabling easy integration into applications such as shipping/receiving 

labeling, warehouse management, shelf labeling and healthcare.

Unique Selling Points 

• Simple to Operate 

Practical design features ensure that the LP/TLP 2844 printers specialize in ease of 

use. The OpenACCESS construction simplifies label loading and facilitates 

maintenance. Access to the media path is maximized as the print head is located in 

the top lid – the ribbon mechanism on the thermal transfer model is also built into the 

top lid. Lockable self-centering media guides snap the media securely in place, 

simplifying loading and preventing label jams. The print head assembly can be 

removed and replaced quickly and easily without special tools or alignment jigs, and 

color-coded components indicate which parts to use for printer loading and 

operation. 

• Enhanced Electronics Platform 

The LP/TLP 2844 is equipped with 512K flash memory for storage of forms, graphics 

and external fonts and 256K SRAM to print longer label lengths (11" standard). 

These printers have flash-based firmware for simple upgrades to prevent firmware 

obsolescence. 

International character sets are standard (excluding Asian fonts, which are factory 

installed options), supporting global labeling applications.

Preventative Maintenance: 

- Zebra recommends cleaning the printer on a regular basis using standard Zebra cleaning

Cleaning: 

- The exterior is cleaned with a lint-free cloth, and if necessary, a mild detergent solution or 

desktop cleaner can be used. Interior components (printhead, platen, media path, and peel

Competitive Information 

The following pages were compiled from the latest manufacturer’s product information as of the 

date of this document. In cases where conflicting product specification or functionality information 

was discovered between a given manufacturer’s printed or on-line material, the manufacturer was 

contacted directly for clarification. 

Products were acquired for purposes of hands-on competitive analysis performed by engineering 

and product management teams. 

Performance testing was performed as follows: 

Test Station 

All products were tested from the same PC. 

• Dell Latitude CPi 400Mhz Pentium II, 128Mb RAM, with 8Gb of available hard-disk capacity 

(i.e., no swap-space limitation), and equipped with Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition 

operating system, set to Windows VM control. 

• All serial interface test-runs were performed using the same high-quality shielded RS-232 

serial cable. 

• All parallel interface test-runs were performed using the same high-quality fully-shielded IEEE 

1284 parallel cable. 

Test Labels: 

All labels were created by hand-coding two real-world label formats with barcodes using the 

manufacturer’s specific label programming language. These were produced as identically as 

possible across manufacturers. This procedure isolated the performance characteristics of each 

tested unit to that of the device’s controller electronics and motion dynamics; i.e., no driver 

overhead or variability. 

• AIAG compliance label 

• K-Mart compliance label 

• For multi-label test runs, 50 unique sets of numeric data was modified in the label program, 

terminated with a memory-flush statement in each, and concatenated into one file. 

Methodology: 

• The PC was booted in DOS mode for each test-run. 

• Label programs were downloaded from the DOS prompt using proprietary parallel and serial 

file downloading utilities. 

• All parallel tests were performed in ECP mode as set in the PC’s BIOS. 

• All serial tests were performed @38.4kbs as set by the serial downloading utility. 

Timing: 

• Timing was performed commencing the test from actuation of the PC’s [ENTER] key to start 

the download, and concluding at the point in time when the trailing-edge of each label (in the 

case of first-label-out tests), or when the last of 50 labels (in the case of multi-label tests), 

ceased forward movement. 

• Three (3) test-runs were performed for each of the two label designs (x) both PC interfaces 

(x) both single and multi-label combinations, for a total of 24 independent tests for each 

product. (3 runs x 2 label types x 2 I/Fs x 2 label volumes.) An average time for each threerun 

test was then calculated for every combination, resulting in eight (8) summary charts. A 

calibrated Fisher Scientific NIST-traceable timing device was used to monitor each even.

Advantage and Solus II models; as such, it has inherited many of the same design flaws. 

• Zebra’s 2844s offer a significant performance advantage – twice as fast as the Del Sol 4 printers. 

• As with the Solus II, the Del Sol 4 does not incorporate an ON-OFF power switch – the AC adapter

LP/TLP 2844 Product Overview 

1. Simple Loading – OpenACCESS 

With Zebra’s OpenACCESS design, the LP/TLP 2844’s print head is integrated as a 

part of the printer cover assembly. The media path and media compartment are fully 

accessible when the printer is open. Printer loading is accomplished in a matter of 

seconds, and in case of unexpected jams from errant media or for maintenance 

requirements, this revolutionary design allows completely unobstructed access. The 

thermal transfer model incorporates the ribbon mechanism in the printer lid. This 

feature facilitates ribbon loading by providing easy access to the mechanism, with no 

tight spaces to negotiate. 

2. Self Centering Media Guides 

The self-centering spring loaded guide provides a simple media loading procedure. 

The guides are spring loaded which allows for a single-handed operation. This userfriendly 

design ensures proper loading and correct alignment for any media. 

3. Rugged Design 

The printer enclosure, both top lid and bottom cover, is made from lightweight but 

very rugged plastic. Double wall construction greatly increases the printer durability, 

and gives a strong, solid feel to the LP/TLP 2844. 

4. Foolproof Design for Exceptional Ease-of-Use 

Color-coded components and an LED indicator add to the operating simplicity of 

these printer models. This means less training and easier operation regardless of 

user’s level of experience. In addition, the printer’s media autosense feature 

eliminates set-up time when changing media. 

5. Easy Maintenance 

The combination of the OpenACCESS design and innovative features in the print 

head and enclosure design make this printer simple to maintain and service. The 

print head can be removed and replaced without use of any tools. The 2844 

electronics platform is accessible by removing a few simple screws. All connectors 

are color coded or keyed for simple assembly and disassembly. The platen roller is 

readily removable, making cleaning or replacement only a matter of seconds. 

6. Media Handling 

The 2844 printers are capable of handling a large variety of media. The LP 2844 

printer is designed to print on direct thermal material including receipt paper, labels, 

and tags. The TLP 2844 uses thermal transfer technology, using heat to transfer ink 

from specialized ribbons to the label. Ribbon types include polyester, wax and 

wax/resin. 

Media supply to both models can be internal or external, roll or fan-fold configuration. 

The standard metal tear bar guarantees clean tears of paper and labels. Standard 

see-through and reflective sensors ensure that the top of form is accurately 

positioned when using media with gap, notch, or black mark. When installed, the

optional peeler, cutter, or external rewinder will enhance LP/TLP 2844 for the most 

demanding applications. 

7. Advanced Print Technology 

LP/TLP 2844 printers use a combination of flash and SRAM memory to increase 

performance while reducing memory management requirements. Flash memory is 

used for firmware, forms, fonts, and graphics storage, while the SRAM is only used 

for format imaging (image buffer). This memory arrangement increases available 

memory storage, maximum label length capacity, and processing speed. Print head 

History Control manages performance of the print head, optimizing heating element 

temperatures and increasing print quality. 

The new high performance printhead used in the 2844 ensures excellent print quality 

at a fast 4 inches per second print speed across a variety of thermal and thermal 

transfer media.

Peeler 

The optional peel mechanism attaches to the front of the 2844 printer unit and includes a 

label taken sensor. The label taken sensor can be turned off to allow the printer to run in 

batch mode. The peel mechanism includes a roller for pulling the label backing, which is 

made from a non-stick material to aid in easy cleaning. 

Asian Character Sets 

When the 2844 printers are ordered in the optional Asian configuration, they are 

equipped with firmware supporting one of the selected Asian character sets along with 

the necessary memory to store the character sets. The printer can support Japanese, 

Chinese, or Korean.

For standalone printing applications where date or time is necessary, the LP/TLP 2844 

can be upgraded with a real time clock chip that can store and print in real time. The

Keyboard Display Unit 

The Zebra KDU is a non-intelligent terminal designed for standalone printing 

applications. It is capable of retrieving forms previously stored in the printer’s flash 

memory. When used with forms that include variable fields, the KDU can also be 

programmed to prompt user to enter required variable data. The KDU also includes an 

auxiliary interface for RS232 input from a scanner or another input device. The KDU 

features a 2-line, 20-character LCD display and a 62-button keypad. 

ZebraNet PrintServer II 

The ZebraNet PrintServer II is an external adapter that enables Zebra printers to be 

utilized as a network printer. Powerful, yet easy-to-use software utilities are included with 

the adapter, providing tools to configure, monitor, and administer printers and queues. 

The ZebraNet PrintServer II adapter can communicate on any 10Base-T Ethernet 

network.

Liner-Free Support 

In cases where liner-free media is used, the LP/TLP 2844 can be equipped with a 

liner-free compatible platen. The platen can be ordered factory installed on a brand 

new printer, or it can be upgraded to an LP/TLP 2844 in the field. The liner-free 

platen cannot be used on standard media and Zebra strongly recommends only use 

of Zebra approved liner-free media. 

External Rewinder 

To support either label peeling applications or batch printing of large rolls, Zebra 

offers an external rewinder which is compatible with the LP/TLP 2844 printers. The 

rewinder is a standalone unit with its own power supply to drive the take-up spool. 

The rewinder can rewind paper, label backing, labels, as well as tags.

Preventive Maintenance and Warranty Information 

Cleaning: 

The LP/TLP 2844 printer exteriors are cleaned with a lint-free cloth, and if necessary, a 

mild detergent solution or desktop cleaner can be used. Interior components (print 

head, platen, media path, peel bar) are cleaned with alcohol or blown air. 

Lubrication 

All mechanical parts of the 2844 Series printer family are self-lubricating and do not 

require additional lubrication. 

Warranty Information 

General Coverage 

Zebra warrants the mechanism, control electronics and power supply, under 

normal use and service, to be free from defects in material and workmanship for 

a period of twelve (12) months from the date of purchase by the end user. Proof 

of purchase or product registration is required. If proof of purchase or product 

registration cannot be established, shipment date to the original buyer (dealer or 

distributor) will be used to establish the warranty period. 

1. Printhead Coverage 

Zebra warrants the printhead, under normal use and service, to be free from 

defects in material and workmanship for a limited period of ninety (90) days from 

the date of purchase by the end user. 

2. Return of Goods Under Warranty 

Zebra policy in effect when returning in-warranty product; An 'Return Material 

Authorization' (RMA) must be obtained from Customer Service before returning 

any product. 

3. Spare Parts Availability

Questions and Answers 

1) Can I upgrade a standard LP/TLP 2844 printer model with a cutter or label peeler? 

Yes. The 2844 can be fitted with the cutter as a factory installed option. The label peel 

option is also factory installed. For more details about these options please refer to the 

Options and Accessories section of this guide. 

2) Which media is recommended for the LP/TLP 2844 printers? 

For optimum print performance and reliability with all Zebra printers, the use of genuine 

Zebra supplies is recommended. Choose from a wide assortment of Zebra media 

varieties to suit the specific application. 

Note that the ribbon length for the TLP 2844 is 244 ft (74 meters) long. 

3) Can I use my TLP 2742 ribbons with a TLP 2844? 

No. The TLP 2742 uses a 3,600” (91m) ribbon, and the TLP 2844 uses a 2,930” (74m) 

ribbon length. 

4) Is software available for LP and TLP 2844 printers? 

Yes. The CAL Tools utility program comes standard with every printer purchase to enable 

you to design and print sample labels in a limited capacity. 

Create-a-Label 3, the full-featured label design software for Zebra printers is available for 

purchase separately. 

5) How can I order an Asian printer with Asian fonts? 

All latest generation Zebra printers are Asian font capable and can be configured using 

the part numbers on the custom configuration pricing page of this guide, or in the Zebra 

price book. The Asian character sets are factory installed options, and are not field 

upgradable. (To upgrade a standard printer would require replacement of the main logic 

board.)
