Wiring options – Isl<strong>and</strong> grid battery charging configuration<br />

The Idea The Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> is connected to a battery bank <strong>and</strong> defines the AC grid by controlling voltage <strong>and</strong> frequency on<br />

the AC side. All components of your off‐grid system are connected to this AC bus. These can be electricity consumers as well<br />

as well as electricity sources (such as Sunny Boy PV‐inverters). In periods with a high energy yield (e.g. daytime with high<br />

insolaration <strong>and</strong> low electricity dem<strong>and</strong> on the consumer side) the Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> extracts AC power from the bus <strong>and</strong> charges<br />

the battery. In periods with high electricity dem<strong>and</strong> (e.g. night time <strong>and</strong> higher electricity dem<strong>and</strong> on the consumer side)<br />

the Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> takes energy out of the battery <strong>and</strong> feeds it to the AC bus.<br />

Flexible Nearly any kind of electricity generator can be integrated into your Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> off‐grid electricity supply:<br />

Photovoltaic plants with Sunny Boy inverters, <strong>wind</strong> energy plants with Windy Boy inverters from SMA, water <strong>turbines</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

even diesel generators that are automatically activated when the state of charge of the connected batteries run low. Off‐grid<br />

electricity supply systems based on Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> can easily be extended <strong>and</strong> modified due to its stackability.<br />

Powerful Off‐grid systems with Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong>s are powerful for two reasons: The coupling of the components on the AC side<br />

results in an adding up of all energy sources. A high solar radiation results in a high output of your Sunny Boy inverters while<br />

this energy is additionally available to the power your Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> can deliver. This increases the total power of your plant.
