Advocacy
(new in 2012)
For more than 100 years, the
YWCA of O‘ahu has worked to
improve the lives of women,
girls and people of all races. We
continue our efforts in economic
empowerment, health and
wellness, racial justice and
civil rights through advocacy
efforts which include dialogue,
education, and organized
action.
In 2012, advocacy by the YWCA
included: community education
and outreach on women’s issues
and racial justice; monitoring
and testifying on bills at the state
and federal level; suggested
‘take- action’ items to our
members; OpEds to our local
papers; and strong partnerships
with other women’s and
advocating organizations.
March marked Women’s History
Month. In celebration of the
monumental advances that
have been made to empower
women in our country, the
YWCA of O‘ahu launched its
2012 Women’s History Month
Series. The topics covered
included:
Women’s Reproductive Rights
Women’s Voting Rights
Title IX Access for Women
Women in the Workplace
Women in the Military
In late spring, members of
the YWCA of O‘ahu, YWCA
Kaua‘i and YWCA Hawai‘i
Island were in Washington DC
for our annual conference and
“Capitol Hill Day.” As a statewide
coalition, we met with our
U.S. Senators and Representatives
to advocate for the importance
of the Community Development
Block Grant (CDBG), Child
Care Development Block Grant
(CCDBG), Victims of Crime Act
(VOCA), and Violence Against
Women Act (VAWA).
In the fall, we participated in
‘Get Out the Vote’ by holding
voter registration drives. We also
held a voter-registration training
for the Young Women’s Network
who also registered voters.
The YWCA of O‘ahu will continue
to build on this momentum and
strengthen its advocacy efforts to
eliminate racism and empower
women.
