100 THE OUTPOST. Unto the Hills. HE was only a shepherd lad. So might a townsman have spoken of him. But Jock was born in the shadow of the hills. His mother's cottage stood by the burnside at their foot, and from childhood he was versed in their ways. He knew them in their sullen winter moods, when the mists crept down from their tops to the glens below. and when the cold winds swept them and filled their every crack and crann\' with snow. He had watched their dull winter colourings change to the brightness of spring. He had seen these colours grow richer and warmer until, with the purple of the autumn heather, they attained their greatest glorv. He knew of things that no townsman ever learns. When he was old enough for a man's work, what more natural than that he should take to shepherding on the hills he knew and loved so well. And then came war. Jock was among the first in the countryside to follow the drum. He told his mother on the day he left her that he would return in the spring when the bracken showed green and the first lambs of the year were born •.. So autumn and winter passed and with the spring, as he had promised, came Jock. But he was blind. An enemy shell had darkened these keen shepherd's eyes of his for ever. As you pass, you may see him seated at the cottage door-step. The spring breezes rustle through the birches. On the moor the peesweep's call is heard. From far up the hillside comes the bleating of sheep calling to their lambs. Jock sits there. listening to catch every sound of awakened nature, his sightless eyes lifted to the everlasting Wlli. ~ Duggie's Stripe. HIS nose is cockit in the air, He greets you wi' a vacant stare An' richt fu' weel the man can swear' ' In gey clear type ' The reason, if ye're no' aware, Is Duggie's stripe. His heid is swellin', yin can see, He throws his weight aboot wi' glee, And in his bonnet there's a bee That needs a swipe; The cause 0' a' this jamboree Is Duggie's stripe, He used to be a cheery lad, Ane 0' the best oor company had, But noo, because he has a squad, He's changed his pipe; I sometimes think 'twill drive him mad, Poor Duggie's stripe. He bawls and struts aboot the place, Ye maunna stoop to tie your lace, Ye canna even dieht your face Or gie't a wipe, For if ye did it wid disgrace, 001' Duggie's stripe. Tho' Duggie's strict he's yet sincere, While we ha'e him we'll ha'e nae fear 0' our squad gettin' out 0' gear When foemen snipe; Wi' richt guid will we'll gie a cheer For Duggie's stripe. When at the Front, and ready baith Tae ficht for honour an' oor faith, Wi' bayonets fixed an' gaspin' braith, An' hefty swipe, We'll follow aye, e'en to the daith, Oor Duggie's stripe. J. B.
