Tetanospasmin
• Potent exotoxin, tetanospasmin (TS), is
produced by C. tetani at the site of the wound
• The toxin is internalized at the neuromuscular
junction into the alpha motor neuron
• TS then travels by retrograde axonal flow to to
the cell body and diffuses out into the synapses
and extracellular spaces of the CNS
• Its major effect is to inhibit transmitter release
from the presynaptic inhibitory neuron
