Pseudomembranous Colitis<br />
• Due to C. difficile, an organism considered<br />
to be a minor member of the normal flora<br />
• Implicated in a huge number of hospital<br />
acquired (nosocomial) infections<br />
• Predisposition: antibiotic disruption of<br />
bowel flora allows organism to flourish<br />
• Pathogenesis<br />
– Toxin A: enterotoxin ordinary diarrhea<br />
– Toxin B: cytotoxin pseudomembranous<br />
colitis
