THE PURDUE PHARMACIST<br />

Volume 88, Issue 1 (<strong>Spring</strong> & <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>2012</strong>)<br />

ADMINISTRATION<br />

As pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, we are all well aware <strong>of</strong> the fact that<br />

creating an effective pharmaceutical product requires a diversity <strong>of</strong> ingredients. The<br />

relative amounts <strong>of</strong> these ingredients may vary, but all are important. In like manner,<br />

producing the next generation <strong>of</strong> leading pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists<br />

requires the engagement <strong>of</strong> a diverse set <strong>of</strong> people.<br />

First and foremost, we must recruit and retain leading faculty that will provide the<br />

critical instruction that serves as the foundation for all that we do. In this issue <strong>of</strong><br />

The <strong>Purdue</strong> Pharmacist we are delighted to introduce Dr. Tonglei Li, the first Allen<br />

Chao Chair in Industrial and Physical <strong>Pharmacy</strong>. You will also read about some <strong>of</strong> the<br />

path breaking research being conducted by Dr. Lynne Taylor, who is providing critical<br />

insight into the molecular interactions that influence the stability <strong>of</strong> pharmaceuticals.<br />

Having completed a long and successful academic career, we are pleased to highlight<br />

Dr. Donald Bergstrom as he begins a new chapter in life.<br />

Second, we must recruit and retain a student body that demonstrates academic<br />

excellence and represents the growing diversity <strong>of</strong> the population that our graduates<br />

will serve. The celebration <strong>of</strong> our Multicultural Programs that serves as our cover story<br />

reminds us <strong>of</strong> our progress, but also that much work remains.<br />

Third, we must develop and maintain an environment in which faculty, staff, and<br />

students can excel. This includes both our physical and intellectual environment.<br />

The present issue highlights some <strong>of</strong> the achievements in these areas, including<br />

the creation <strong>of</strong> an executive conference room (Thank you Jeannie and Jim Chaney!)<br />

and bringing world renowned speakers to the <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Fourth, we must engage our alumni in this great enterprise <strong>of</strong> preparing the<br />

next generation. In multiple articles, you will learn <strong>of</strong> how alumni are giving back<br />

by returning to campus to speak to students, serving as preceptors, organizing<br />

fundraising events, and giving monetarily to support initiatives.<br />

Blended together, these ingredients produce graduates who will impact the<br />

world. Several articles about recent, and some not so recent, graduates round<br />

out this issue to illustrate the fruit <strong>of</strong> the combined work <strong>of</strong> the entire <strong>Purdue</strong><br />

<strong>Pharmacy</strong> Family. Thanks for your part in supporting the Family!<br />
