all types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> events and it preserves <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir aspectual<br />

class.<br />

The difficulty for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> MT systems is thus<br />

to choose correctly am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> three abovementi<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

tenses <strong>in</strong> French, which are all valid<br />

possibilities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> translat<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> English SP. When<br />

MT systems fail to generate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> correct tense <strong>in</strong><br />

French, several levels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>in</strong>correctness may occur,<br />

exemplified <strong>in</strong> Figure 2 with sentences taken<br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> data used <strong>in</strong> this paper (see Secti<strong>on</strong> 3 and<br />

Grisot and Cart<strong>on</strong>i (2012)).<br />

1. In certa<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>texts, tenses may be quite <strong>in</strong>terchangeable,<br />

which is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> unproblematic case<br />

for mach<strong>in</strong>e translati<strong>on</strong>, depend<strong>in</strong>g also <strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evaluati<strong>on</strong> measure. In Example 1 from<br />

Figure 2, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> verb étaient c<strong>on</strong>sidérées (were<br />

seen) <strong>in</strong> IMP has a focus <strong>on</strong> temporal length<br />

which is preserved even if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> translated tense<br />

is a PC (<strong>on</strong>t été c<strong>on</strong>sidérées, i.e. have been<br />

seen) thanks to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> adverb toujours (always)).<br />

2. In o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r c<strong>on</strong>texts, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tense proposed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

MT system can sound strange but rema<strong>in</strong>s acceptable.<br />

For <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>in</strong> Example 2, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re<br />

is a focus <strong>on</strong> temporal length with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> IMP<br />

translati<strong>on</strong> (voyait, viewed) but this mean<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is not preserved if a PC is used (a vu, has<br />

viewed) though it can be recovered by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

reader.<br />

3. The tense output by an MT system may be<br />

grammatically wr<strong>on</strong>g. In Example 3, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PC<br />

a renouvelé (has renewed) cannot replace <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

IMP renouvelaient (renewed) because <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>flict with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> imperfective mean<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>veyed<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> adverbial sans cesse (aga<strong>in</strong> and<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>).<br />

4. F<strong>in</strong>ally, a wr<strong>on</strong>g tense <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> MT output can<br />

be mislead<strong>in</strong>g, if it does not c<strong>on</strong>vey <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mean<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> source text but rema<strong>in</strong>s unnoticed<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reader. In Example 4, us<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PC<br />

a été leads to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong> that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pers<strong>on</strong><br />

was no l<strong>on</strong>ger <strong>in</strong>volved when he died,<br />

whereas us<strong>in</strong>g IMP était implies that he was<br />

still <strong>in</strong>volved, which may trigger very different<br />

expectati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>in</strong>d <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reader<br />

(e.g. <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possible cause <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> death, or its<br />

importance to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> peace process).<br />

1. EN: Although <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> US viewed Musharraf as an agent<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> change, he has never achieved domestic political legitimacy,<br />

and his policies were seen as rife with c<strong>on</strong>tradicti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

FR: Si les Etats-Unis voient Moucharraf comme un agent<br />

de changement, ce dernier n’est jamais parvenu à avoir<br />

une légitimité dans s<strong>on</strong> propre pays, où ses politiques <strong>on</strong>t<br />

toujours été c<strong>on</strong>sidérées (PC) / étaient c<strong>on</strong>sidérées (IMP)<br />

comme un tissu de c<strong>on</strong>tradicti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

2. EN: Indeed, she even persuaded o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r important<br />

political leaders to participate <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> planned January 8<br />

electi<strong>on</strong>, which she viewed as an opportunity to challenge<br />

religious extremist forces <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> public square.<br />

FR: Benazir Bhutto a même c<strong>on</strong>va<strong>in</strong>cu d’autres dirigeants<br />

de participer aux électi<strong>on</strong>s prévues le 8 janvier, qu’elle voyait<br />

(IMP) / ?a vu (PC) comme une occasi<strong>on</strong> de s’opposer<br />

aux extrémistes religieux sur la place publique.<br />

3. EN: The ag<strong>on</strong>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> grief which overpowered <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m<br />

at first, was voluntarily renewed, was sought for, was<br />

created aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong>...<br />

FR: Elles s’encouragèrent l’une l’autre dans leur afflicti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

la renouvelaient (IMP) / l’*a renouvelé (PC) vol<strong>on</strong>tairement,<br />

et sans cesse...<br />

4. EN: Last week a pers<strong>on</strong> who was at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heart <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> peace process passed away.<br />

FR: La sema<strong>in</strong>e passée une pers<strong>on</strong>ne qui était (IMP) / a<br />

été (PC) au cœur du processus de paix est décédée.<br />

Figure 2: Examples <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> translati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> English<br />

SP by an MT system, differ<strong>in</strong>g from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reference<br />

translati<strong>on</strong>: (1) unproblematic, (2) strange<br />

but acceptable, (3) grammatically wr<strong>on</strong>g (*), and<br />

(4) mislead<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2.3 Verb Tenses <strong>in</strong> SMT<br />

Model<strong>in</strong>g verb tenses for SMT has <strong>on</strong>ly recently<br />

been addressed. For Ch<strong>in</strong>ese/English translati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

G<strong>on</strong>g et al. (2012) built an n-gram-like sequence<br />

model that passes <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> from previously<br />

translated ma<strong>in</strong> verbs <strong>on</strong>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next verb so that<br />

its tense can be more correctly rendered. Tense is<br />

morphologically not marked <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese, unlike <strong>in</strong><br />

English, where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> verbs forms are modified accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to tense (am<strong>on</strong>g o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r factors). With such<br />

a model, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> authors improved translati<strong>on</strong> by up to<br />

0.8 BLEU po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>versely, <strong>in</strong> view <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> English/Ch<strong>in</strong>ese translati<strong>on</strong><br />

but without implement<strong>in</strong>g an actual translati<strong>on</strong><br />

system, Ye et al. (2007) used a classifier<br />

to generate and <strong>in</strong>sert appropriate Ch<strong>in</strong>ese aspect<br />

markers that <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>texts have to follow <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese verbs but are not present <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> English<br />

source texts.<br />

For translati<strong>on</strong> from English to German, Gojun<br />

and Fraser (2012) reordered verbs <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> English<br />

source to positi<strong>on</strong>s where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y normally occur <strong>in</strong><br />
