ENDEAVOUR POSTGRADUATE AWARD
International Relations and
Diplomacy
“IT IS VERY GOOD FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS –
LEARNING AND INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE FROM VARIOUS
BACKGROUNDS.”
When he was a high school student in
Thailand, Pett Jarupaiboon decided that
he wanted to become an ambassador
for his country.
As time went on he changed his mind
about ambassadorship and decided his
future lay in academia.
As a recipient of a prestigious Endeavour
Award, Mr Jarupaiboon is completing a
PhD in International Relations and
Diplomacy at The Australian National
University (ANU) in Canberra.
Mr Jarupaiboon said he chose this degree
because he wants to pursue a career in
International Relations as a university
lecturer.
“I am particularly interested in the theory of
the subject because I think everything has
its origin at the ideation level,” he said.
He believes his involvement in the
academic field of International Relations
will equip him to think outside the box to
best cope with current world challenges
such as poverty, terrorism and
environmental degradation.
“The way one thinks dominates the way
one acts, so this is the discipline that
allows me to explore numerous ways to
address social ills that have long been left
uncured in society, starting from the
mentality,” he said.
A FRIENDLY COUNTRY
“What has impressed me the most is the
kindness and friendliness of the people.
Australia is a multicultural society open to
foreigners, so it is very good for
international students in terms of learning
and interacting with people from various
backgrounds.”

During his study break Mr Jarupaiboon
visited different places in Australia.
“Australia is huge. There are so many
beautiful attractions here: scenic
mountains; beaches, native wildlife,” he
said.
A COVETED AWARD
Mr Jarupaiboon is proud of being an
Endeavour Award recipient. He will be
among the few International Relations
scholars in Thailand in possession of an
Australian degree.
“At my home university there are a wide
range of foreign policy courses on offer,
but not one on Australia. Once my degree
is complete I will be very knowledgeable
about Australia, which will serve as a basis
for an understanding of all the dimensions
of the country.”
INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION
As a result of being an Endeavour Award
Holder he hopes to be able to maintain the
already good relations and academic
linkages between Australia and Thailand.
Mr Jarupaiboon said being a university
lecturer, “has added a purpose to my life,
leading me to live a meaningful life, and
ultimately enabling me to address the
social ills that I am surrounded by in
Thailand,” he said.
“I will, as a university lecturer, be able to
spark academic interest in Australian
studies or set up an Australian studies
centre where I teach.”
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
During the term of the Endeavour Award,
recipients receive ongoing support from a
dedicated case manager. This includes
pre-departure briefings, advice and
assistance with visas, health, travel,
insurance, accommodation and a 24 hour
emergency contact.
