16 evaluations of social interventions Highways Agency sexual health, reproduction and social exclusion These two streams of SSRU’s work are described together because of overlapping links between them. We seek both to evaluate sexual, reproductive and other health interventions and to understand the influence of social and economic factors on these issues. In 2012 we have been involved in evaluating interventions in the fields of education, health education and social work. Our evaluations of social interventions used a variety of designs including randomised controlled trials, economic evaluations, and in-depth process evaluations. Additionally we have carried out a longitudinal qualitative study with women reflecting on the their transition to motherhood. 14
Teaching Staff in both streams have been involved in teaching for the Institute’s Doctoral School, focusing on methodology and research project management. We aim to communicate our ethos of carrying out ethical multi-method social research that incorporates rigorous quantitative methods alongside intensive qualitative enquiry. Key Research Outputs Publications in 2012 within these two streams have included: two publications from the national evaluation of the Department for Education’s pilot Social Work Practices (Publications nos. 37 and 53); an article arising from a study of the societal impact of England’s smoke-free legislation which explores smoking practices of young adults (Publication no. 34); a report for the Department of Health of an evaluation of the Healthy Start voucher scheme (in Press) which explored the views of the parents, professionals and small retailers involved in the scheme; a DfE research report and research briefing of research on the key issues involved in successfully implementing evidence based programmes in new settings (Publications nos. 57 and 58). This work involved a synthesis of international literature and interviews with UK experts. It focused on universal issues of implementation as well as providing examples from the international implementation of four evidence-based children’s services programmes: Multi-Systemic Therapy, Functional Family Therapy, Multi-Treatment Foster Care, and KEEP (Keeping Foster and Kinship Parents Supported and Trained). 15 15
