2.1 Philip Kinreade—1680 

2.1.1 Philip Kinreade (4369) was born circa 1680. He married Averick Kissag on the 

30th of January, 1702, at Lezayre. According to his Will he died on the 15th of 

April, 1734. See 2.2 for details of his descendants. 

2.1.2 Averick Kissag (4478) was born circa 1680. She married Philip Kinreade on the 

30th of January, 1702, at Lezayre. Her Will gives her date of death as the 30th of 

November, 1735. See 2.2 for details of her descendants.

2.2.1 Philip Kinread was baptized on the 23rd of December, 1703, at Lezayre. He 

married Joney Cowle on the 19th of February, 1733–4, at Andreas. See 2.3 for 

details of his descendants. 

He inherited land from his mother and was her executor in 1736 

2.2.1.1 Joney Cowle (4686) was born circa 1703. She married Philip Kinread on the 

19th of February, 1733–4, at Andreas. See 2.3 for details of her descendants. 

2.2.2 Daniel Kinread (5443) was baptized on the 10th of August, 1706, at Lezayre. He is 

not mentioned in his father’s Will of 1734 and is presumed to have died by then. 

2.2.3 Averick Kinread (5444) was baptized on the 2nd of March, 1708, at Lezayre. She 

was not mentioned in her father’s Will of April 1734 and is presumed to have died 

by that time. 

2.2.4 Isabel Kinread (5445) was baptized on the 6th of July, 1711, at Lezayre. She was a 

legatee of her father’s Will in April 1734. She would appear to have been unmarried 

at that time. 

2.2.5 Robert Kinread (5446) was baptized on the 2nd of February, 1713, at Lezayre. He 

was a legatee of his father’s Will of April 1734. 

2.2.6 Daniel Kinread (5447) was baptized on the 23rd of December, 1716, at Lezayre. 

He was not mentioned in his father’s Will of April 1734 and is presumed to have died 

by that date. 

2.2.7 William Kinread (5448) was baptized on the 10th of June, 1718, at Lezayre. He is 

not mentioned in the probate of his father’s Will in April 1734 when he would have 

been a minor. Presumed to have died before this date. 

2.2.8 Margaret Kinread (5449) was baptized on the 18th of April, 1721. Noted as a 

minor child in her father’s Will of April 1734.

2.6.1 Mary Kinread was born circa 1695. She married Ewan Kissack on the 27th of

She was possibly the daughter of Gilbert Kinread, baptized 3rd of August, 1700, at 

Lezayre. 

2.6.2 Ewan Kissage was born circa 1690. He married firstly Mary Kinreade on the 27th 

of July, 1717, at Lezayre and secondly Mary Corkish circa 1732.

2.11.2 Thomas Kinread (3915) was baptized on the 19th of December, 1794, at Lezayre. 

He did not survive childhood. 

2.11.2.1 Ann Gell was born circa 1817 at Jurby. She married firstly William Crellin on 

the 1st of April, 1837, at German and secondly Thomas Kinread on the 23rd of 

August, 1857, at Ramsey. 

2.11.3 Jane Kinread (3916) was baptized on the 25th of December, 1796, at Lezayre. In 

1851 she was living, unmarried, with her brother Hugh at West Ballaugh, Lezayre. 



She was buried on the 16th of March, 1869, at Lezayre when her age was recorded as 

73 years. 

2.11.4 William Kinread (3918) was baptized on the 21st of August, 1799, at Lezayre 

2.11.5 Ewan/Hugh Kinread (3919) was baptized on the 3rd of May, 1802, at Lezayre. He 

married Sarah Cowley (see 16.6.1) on the 14th of January, 1843, at Lezayre. He was 

buried at Lezayre on the 6 th of February, 1872, when his age was recorded as 69 

years. See 2.12 for details of his descendants. 

Hea appears to have fathered two illegitimate childen before his marriage. Jane born 

circa 1835 and James John baptized in 1843. 

In 1841 he was farming near Ballabroie, Lezayre. Living with him was Jane, aged 5, 

apparently his daughter.In 1851 he was living at Ballamanagh, Lezayre, on the farm 

of his in–laws, John & Ann Cowley. In 1861 he and his family were farming 75 acres 

at West Ballamanagh, Lezayre, when he was employing 1 labourer. In 1871 the 

family were farming at Ballamanagh. 

2.11.5.1 James John Kinrade (6420) was baptized on the 7th of May, 1843, at Ballaugh, 

the son of Hugh Kinrade and Jane Cleator. He was baptized as Cleator though the 

names of both parents are recorded. 

In 1851 he was living with his mother and step–father at Cladagh Mill, Lezayre. 

2.11.5.2 Jane Cleator (6419) was baptized on the 30th of March, 1808, at Lezayre, the 

daughter of Edmund Crow and Eleanor Cleator. She was baptized as Cleator though 

the names of both parents are recorded. She married William Cashin on the 10th of 

March, 1849, at Lezayre. This was a second marriage for William, his first being to 

Esther Moore on the 9th of October, 1834, at Santan. In 1861, a widow, she was 

living with her daughter at the Curragh, Lezayre, and living off rents. 

2.11.6 Leonora Kinread (3920) was baptized on the 17th of August, 1804, at Lezayre. 

She did not survive childhood. 

2.11.7 Thomas Christian Kinread (3921) was baptized on the 17th of November, 1805, at 

Jurby. 

2.11.8 Catherine Kinread (3922) was baptized on the 1st of March, 1807, at Lezayre. 

2.11.9 Leonora Kinread (3923) was baptized on the 21st of July, 1811, at Lezayre.The 

1841 census shsows here living as Queen Street, Douglas and employed as a 

dressmaker. She has not been found in the 1851 census. She has not been found in 

any subsequent census nor has a burial record been found.

2.12.1 Jane Kinread (3927) was born circa 1835. A baptism has not been found but the 

1841 census hsows her living with her father near Ballabroie, Lezayre, aged 5 years. 

In 1851 she was living with her father and family at the farm of John & Ann Cowley. 

At this time she was described as “grand-daughter”, aged 16 years, and her 

occupation was given as dressmaker. 

2.12.2 Hugh Kinrade (3928) was baptized on the 9th of August, 1843, at Lezayre. In 

1851 he was living with his parents at Ballamanagh, Lezarye. In 1861 he was living 

with his parents at WestBallamanagh. In 1871 he was living with his parents at 

Ballamanaugh. In 1881 he was boarding in Castletown and his occupation was 

recorded as “theological student”. 

2.12.3 John Thomas Kinrade (3929) was baptized on the 21st of December, 1845, at 

Lezayre. He married Maria Teare on the 20th of May, 1865, at Andreas. See 2.13 for 


In 1851 he was living with his parents at Ballamanagh, Lezarye In 1861 he was 

living with his parents at WestBallamanagh. In 1871 he and his family were living 

at Cardle Beg, Maughold, when John was employed at the lead mines. The family do 

not appear in the 1881 or later censuses and are assumed to have emigrated. 

2.12.3.1 Maria Teare (7019) was baptized on the 12th of June 1842, at Lezayre, the 

daughter of Thomas Teare and Margaret Cowley. She married John Thomas Kinrade 

on the 20th of May, 1865, at Andreas. See 2.13 for details of her descendants. 

In 1851 Maria Teare, 9, born Lezayre, was niece of John & Ann Cowley at Airy Kelo, 

Lezayre. 

2.12.4 Margaret Kinrade (3930) was baptized on the 27th of September, 1847, Lezayre. 

She married Daniel Quirk on the 30th of July, 1871, at Lezayre. 

In 1851 she was living with hers parents at Ballamanagh, Lezarye. In 1861 she was 

living with her parents at WestBallamanagh. In 1871 she was living with her 

parents at Ballamanaugh. 

2.12.5 William Watterson Kinrade (3931) was baptized on the 22nd of July, 1849, at 

Lezayre. In 1851 he was living with his parents at Ballamanagh, Lezarye. In 1861 he 

was living with his parents at WestBallamanagh. In 1871, a mason, he was living 

with his parents at Ballamanaugh. He emigrated to Australia. 

2.12.6 Frederick Kinrade (3932) was baptized on the 20th of April, 1851, at Lezayre. In 

1861 he was living with his parents at WestBallamanagh. In 1871, a joiner, he was 

living with his parents at Ballamanaugh. He emigrated to Australia. 

2.12.7 Thomas Kinrade (4557) was born circa 1852. A baptism has not been found but 

his age is given as 8 years in the 1861 census. In 1871, a joiner, he was living with his 

parents at Ballamanaugh. He emigrated to Australia. 

2.12.8 Sarah Ann Kinrade (3933) was baptized on the 4th of January, 1854, at Lezayre. 

In 1861 she was living with her parents at WestBallamanagh. She has not been 

identified in the 1871 census. 

2.12.9 Eliza Leanora Kinrade (3934) was baptized on the 23rd of September, 1855, at 

Sulby. In 1861 she was living with her parents at WestBallamanagh. In 1871 she was 

living with her parents at Ballamanaugh. 



2.12.10 Charles Stanley Kinrade (3935) was baptized on the 20th of February, 1859, at 

Lezayre. In 1861 he was living with his parents at WestBallamanagh. In 1871 he was 

living with his parents at Ballamanaugh. He emigrated to Australia.

2.13.3 Margaret Anne Kinrade (7022) was baptized on the 18th of April, 1869, at 

Dhoon. 

2.13.4 Mary Kinrade (7023) was born circa 1871. Her age wasgiven as 3 months in the 

1871 census. 

2.14 Thomas Kinread—1775 

2.14.1 Thomas Kinread (4100) was born ca 1775. He married Ann Quayle on the 24th of 

April, 1798, at Lezayre. He appears to have died before 1841. 

2.14.1.1 Ann Quayle (4103) was born circa 1777. She married Thomas Kinread on the 

24th of April, 1798, at Lezayre. She was buried on the 7th of December, 1856, at 

Ballaugh when her age was recorded as 83 years. See 2.15 for details of her 

descendants. 

In 1841 she was farming at Ballarenny, Lezayre, with her unmarried children. She 

was possibly a widow by this time for she is so described in 1851 when she was 

farming 40 acres at Killibreage, Lezayre. Four of her unmarried children and a 

grand–daughter are living with her.

2.15.2 Anne Kinread (4105) was baptized on the 27th of April, 1800, at Lezayre. In 1841 

she was living with William Cottier and his family at Ballakamish, Lezayre. Living 

with her was Elizabeth Kinrade, aged 5, presumably her daughter. 

2.15.2.1 Elizabeth Kinrade (4113) was born circa 1835. A baptism has not yet been 

found. She is assumed to be an illegitimate daughter of Anne. In 1841 she was living 

with her mother. 

2.15.2.2 Ann Kinrade (4114) was born circa 1838. She appears in the 1851 census living 

on the family farm, at which time she is described as a grand–daughter. Her parents 

have not yet been determined, though she may be the Ann Kinrade living with John 

& Jane Christian at Balla Cottier, Andreas, in 1841. For the time being she is assumed 

to be a second daughter of Anne. 

2.15.3 Thomas Kinread (4106) was baptized on the 7th of August, 1802, at Lezayre. 

2.15.4 Isabella Kinread (4107) was baptized on the 25th of November, 1804, at Lezayre. 

2.15.5 John Kinread (4108) was baptized on the 15th of March, 1807, at Lezayre. In 

1851 he was living, unmarried, with his widowed mother at Killibreage, Lezayre, 

where they were farming 40 acres. In 1861 he was farming at Sharragh Bane, 

Ballaugh, with his unmarried brother, Hugh. 

2.15.6 William Kinread (4109) was baptized on the 11th of May 1809, at Lezayre. A 

mason, he was living, unmarried, with his mother on the family farm in 1841 and 

1851. 

2.15.7 James Kinread (4110) was baptized on the 26th of December, 1811, at Lezayre. 

2.15.8 Catherine Kinread (4111) was baptized on the 8th of May, 1814, at Lezayre. She 

was living, unmarried, with her mother on the family farm in 1841 and 1851. In 

1861 she was living with her unmarried brother at Saharragh Bane, Ballaugh. 

2.15.9 Ewan/Hugh Kinread (4112) was baptized on the 10th of August, 1817, at 

Lezayre. An agricultural labourer, he was living, unmarried, with his mother on the 

family farm in 1841 and 1851. In 1861 he and his brother John were farming at 

sharragh Bane, Ballaugh.

Ballalhaane, Andreas. In 1851 he was farming 21 acres with his widowed 

mother–in–law at Ballathona, Andreas. In 1861 he was farming at Ballahane 

Quarterland, Andreas. In 1871 the family appear to be at BallaMcSkealy, Andreas, 

when he was recorded as faming 66 acres and employing 4 labourers. He died on the

2.18.1.1 Margaret Kneen (3840) was baptized on the 26th of January, 1812, at Michael. 

She married William Kinrade on the 22nd of September, 1832, at Andreas. She died 

on the 18th of April, 1875, see Andreas Old Yard. See 18.2.1 for details of her family 

and 2.19 for details of her descendants. 

The 1871 census records her name as “Jane”. 

2.18.2 Catherine Kinread (3832) was baptized on the 12th of November, 1820, at 

Andreas. She married William Faragher circa 1841. See 2.22 for details of her 

descendants. she was buried at Andreas on the 16th of June, 1904, when her age 

was recorded as 86 years. 

In 1841 she was living and working on the farm of Thomas Lea at Ballacomaish, 

Andreas. In 1851 she and her family were living Near the Lhen, Andras. 

2.18.2.1 William Faragher (6756) was born circa 1820 at Andreas. He married Catherine 

Kinread circa 1841. He was buried at Andreas on the 27th of July, 1900, when his age 

was recorded as 82 years. See 2.22 for details of his descendants. 

In 1851 he and his family were living near the Lhen, Andreas, when he was employed 

as an agricultural labourer. In 1861 the family were living on the Ballawhane 

Quarterland, Andreas. In 1871 the family were living on Ballakiel, Andreas. In 1881 

the family were again at Ballakeil. 

2.18.3 Esther Ann Kinread (3833) was baptized on the 16th of April, 1824, at Andreas. 

In 1841 she was living with her parents at Ballaclucas, Andreas. 



2.18.4 Daniel Kinread (3834) was baptized on the 24th of July, 1827, at Andreas. In 1841 

he was living with his parents at Ballaclucas, Andreas. He does not appear in the 

1851 census but as he was probably a fisherman this is not unexpected. He married 

Elizabeth Crow circa 1853 although a record has not been found. In 1861 he and his 

family were living at Ballavartin, Andreas, at which time he was described as a 

fisherman. In 1871 the family were living at Balla Mc Skealy, Andreas. At this time 

Daniel was described as a mason which probably reflects his other trade when not 

fishing. In 1881 he was fishing on the “Village Maid” while his family were living at 

Ballavartin, Andreas. He died on the 19th of May, 1887, and was buried at Andreas 

(see MIs). See 2.23 for details of his descendants. 

2.18.4.1 Elizabeth Crow (4155) was baptized on the 21st of February, 1830, at Jurby, the 

daughter of John Crow & Catherine Kewn. In 1901 she was living with her daughter 

Esther and family at 57, Waterlood Road, Ramsey. She died on the 22nd of July, 

1906, and was buried with her husband at Andreas (see MIs). See 2.23 for details of 

her descendants. 

2.18.4.1.1 John Crow was born circa 1790. An agricultural labourer, in 1841 he was living 

at Ballavarran, Jurby, with his two daughters, Catherine (bp: 7/9/1823, 

Ballaugh) and Elizabeth above. He appear to be a widower at this time and does not 

appear in the 1851 census. No marriage has been found for John Crow and 

Catherine Ke(o)wn. 

2.18.5 John Kinread (3835) was baptized on the 6th of February, 1831, at Andreas. John 

married Eleanor Curphey on the 10th of July, 1852, at Jurby. He was buried at 

Lezayre on the 4th of Septemper, 1895. 

In 1841 he was living with his parents at Ballaclucas, Andreas. The family have not 

been found in the 1851 census. In 1861 John was employed as an agricultural 

labourer in Jurby. In 1871–91 he and his family were living at Narradale, Lezayre, 

though by 1891 John was a widower. See 2.24 for details of his descendants. 

2.18.6 Eleanor Curphey ((4678) was born circa 1830 at Jurby. She married John Kinrade 

on the 10th of July, 1852, at Jurby. She was buried on the 1st of November, 1878, at 

Lezayre. See 2.24 for details of her descendants. 

2.18.7 Henry Kinread (3836) was baptized on the 19th of October, 1834, at Andreas. He 

married Ellenor Mylroie circa 1864, though a marriage record has not been found.

In 1841 he was living with his parents at Ballaclucas, Andreas. He was a fisherman. 

In 1891 he was a patient at the Braddan Lunatic Asylum. In 1901, a widower, he was 

living with his son William and family at Ballathane, Andreas.

2.19.1 Elizabeth J Kinrade (3841) was born circa 1840. A baptism ha not been found and 

though she does not appear in the 1841 census, the 1851 census gives her age as 11 

years. In 1861 she was a house servan to John Curphey at Cammal, Michael. There is 

a probable marriage to John Shields on the 21st of February, 1863, at Michael. The 

couple do not appear in later Island censuses. 

2.19.2 William Kinrade (3842) was baptized on the 23rd of November, 1842, at 

Andreas. He died in infancy. 

2.19.3 John Kinrade (3843) was born circa 1841. In 1851 he was living with his parents 

aged 8 years at Ballathona, Andreas. He has not been found in the 1861 census 

which means that he was probably fishing on census night. He married Jane 

Cormode (see 7.11.4) on the 14th of October, 1865, at Andreas. In 1871 he and his 

family were living at Balla McSkealy, Andreas, at which time he was employed as an 

agricultural labourer. By 1881 the family were living at Ballasalla East, Jurby, and 

farming 87 acres. According to his gravestone, John died on the 26th of November, 

1885, at Ballwanton, aged 44 years. See 2.20 for details of his descendants. 

2.19.4 Ann Kinrade (3844) was baptized on the 1st of February, 1846, at Andreas. In 

1851 she was living with her parents at Ballathona, Andreas. In 1861 she was living

Although the baptismal record on the IGI indicates his name was John Robert, the 

1891 census gives his and his eldest son’s name as John T. 

In 1851 he was living with his parents at Airy Kelo, Lezayre. The family have not 

been found in the 1861—81 censuses. In 1891 he and his family appear In Douglas 

at 13, Hill Street. He was a boilermaker. His first four children were all born in 



England. The indications are that he and his wife moved to Whitehaven, 

Cumberland, immediately after their marriage and then to Barrow–in–Furness.

He has first been identified in the census of 1861 (Ramsey 2—152) when he and his 

family were living at Quayle’s Court. At this time he was employed as a coal porter. 

Although his age is clearly given as 65 years he has not been identified in any 

previous census. He has not been identifed in the 1871 census though a burial has 

not been located. 

2.34.1.1 Ann Gale (6227) was born circa 1817 at Ballaugh. She married firstly William 

Crellin on the 1st of April, 1837, at German and secondly Thomas Kinrade on the 

23rd of August, 1857, at Ramsey. A burial has not been located.

master mariner. In 1901, a wdower, he was living at 14, Glenfaba Road, Peel. His 

widowed mother and a niece, Nellie aged 16, were living with him. 

2.40.2.1 Ann Mylrea (6382) was born circa 1836 at Lonan. She married John Kinread on 

the 17th of April, 1883, at Braddan. 

2.40.3 Thomas Kinreade (4216) was baptized on the 5th of July, 1840, at Lezayre. He 

married Ann Moore on the 4th of December, 1875, at Santan, see Volume I, 13.16.2. 

He was buried at Santan on the 9th of January, 1919, when his age was recorded as 

77 years. 

In 1841 he was living with his parents at Glen Moore, Lezayre. In 1851 he was living 

with his parents at Kerumanagh, Lezayre. He has not been found in the 1861 and 

1871 censuses but he was proably at the fishing grounds. In 1881 his wife and 

family were living at 11, Glenfaba, Peel, when he is noted as being at the fishing 

grounds. His youngest child was born in May of 1897 at Peel, but by the census of 

1891 the family had moved to Mullen-e-Quinney, Santan, where Thomas was 

employed as a miller. In 1901 the family were still at Mullen-e-Quinney. 

2.40.4 William James Kinrade (4217) was baptized on the 1st of March, 1844, at Sulby. 

He did not survive infancy. 

2.40.5 William James Kinrade (4218) was baptized on the 25th of May, 1845, at Lezayre. 

In 1851 he was living with his parents at Kerukanagh, Lezayre. In 1861 he was

when he was employed as an apprentice miller. In 1901 he was visiting at 1, 

Kignswood Terrace Douglas where his siter Elizabeth was boarding. He was 

employed as a police constable. 

2.41.2 Annie Robena Kinrade (6935) was born circa 1877 at Peel. Neither a registration 

nor a baptism has been foumd. She married Thomas Christopher Kennish on the 

26th of February, 1903, at Santan. She ws buried at Santan on the 13th of December, 

1945, when her age was recorded as 68 years. 

In 1881 she was living with her parents at 11, Glenfaba, Peel. In 1891 she was living 

with her parents at Mullen-e-Quinney, Santan. In 1901 she was living with her 

parents at Mullen-e-Quinney.

his twin brother. He was buried at Lonan on the 22nd of February, 1962, when his 

age was recorded as 79 years.

2.44.1.1 Ann Quayle was born circa 1810 at Andreas. She married firstly William Clarke 

on the 22nd of November, 1834, at Bride, and secondly William Kinrade on the 2nd 

of June, 1844, at Bride. A dressmaker, her age was given as 20–24 in the 1841 census 

and 40 in the 1851 census and 48 in the 1861 census when she was a widow living at 

Church Street, Ramsey, with her unmarried daughter, Margaret. 

2.44.1.1.1 William Clark was born circa 1815. He married Ann Quayle on the 22nd of November, 

1834, at Bride. In 1841, an agricultural labourer, he was living with his 

wife and three daughters at Garey, Lezayre. He died before the census of 1851.

are available. 

2.45.3 Louisa Clark was baptized on the 2nd of May, 1841, at Maughold. In 1841 she 

was living with her parents at Garey, Lezayre, aged one month. She has not been 

found in the 1851 census and is presumed to have died in childhood.
