NOTE: The birth order has not been established but is seem likel that Henry was the eldest son if not
the eldest child. He appears to be tho only married child at the death of his mother in 1659-60.
4.2.1 Henry Corkish (5635) was born circa 1620. He married Joney Maddrell circa
1650. He was buried at Rushen on the 11th of January, 1715.
His Will mentions his sons John, living in Kent, Henry (Harry) and Richard and his
Margery, John and Joney
4.2.1.1 Joney Maddrell (5922) was born circa 1620. She married Henry Corkish circa
1650. She died in the last quarter of 1699.
The name of her father has not been identified but her mother appears to have been
Jane Corkish. She was mentioned in the Will of her mother–in–law, Jane Taylor,
above. Her Will mentions her children Richard, Margaret, Joney and John, her
grandson Thomas Watterson, her brother John, a Kathrin Qualtrough and a Chris:
Note: The birth order has not been establshed, It is known that John was alive in 1660.
4.3.1 Henry Corkish (5930) was born circa 1660. He was not mentioned in the Will of
his grandmother, Jane Taylor, in February 1659-60, which could imply that he was
probably not yet born. Alternatively if he was the eldest son and presumed heir of
the family farm no separate provision would be made in the Will.
A marriage has not yet been identified but he is thought to have had at least one son.
by Bishop Creggan. He was a miner and married twice; first to Margaret Parks on
the 18th of August, 1810, at Malew, and secondly to Isabella Simpson on the 4th of
September, 1841, at Santan. He died in 1853 and was buried on the 28th of April at
Rushen.
Sometime between 1816 and 1821 the family moved to the parish of Marown and it
was here in 1833 that Margaret died. She was buried at Marown on the 26th of
December.
William Corkish, of the parish of Marown, was married for the second time on the
4th of September, 1841 at Santan Church to Isabella Simpson. William is described
as a Widower of the Parish of Marown and Elizabeth is described as a Spinster of the
Parish of Santan. Both made their marks. The witnesses were John Clarke (who
made his mark) and Samuel Taggart. In 1851 William is still working at the Foxdale
Lead Mines and living at Eairy with his wife and children. At times William has
been described as a shoemaker, e.g., at the marriage of his son, John, in 1864. It was
quite common for miners to have a second job. The choice of occupational
description may reflect the actual economic conditions at the time. After his death
in April 1853 Isabella and her son Robert Corkish (268) continue living at the same
cottage. Robert is employed at the mines in Foxdale and Isabella is farming six acres.
4.7.7.1 Margaret Parks (213) was born circa 1789. She married William Corkish on the
18th of August, 1810, at Malew. She died in 1833 and was buried at Marown on the
26th of December.
4.7.7.2 Isabella Simpson (246) was born circa 1803. She married William Corkish on
the 4th of September, 1841, at Santan. She was buried at Marown on the 1st of
January, 1874, when her age was recoreded as 70 years.
In 1841 she was living at Balla Harrison, Santan, with Robert Simpson, 70, her father
? Jane aged 9 was also living with the family, possible a niece to Isablla. In 1851
she was living with her family at Eairy Kellag, Marown. In 1861 she was living in
Marown in a cottage on Eirey Kiley. She was a widow and farming 6 acres. Her unmarried
children Robert and Isabella were living with her.
4.7.7.2.1 Margaret Kinnish (7259) was born circa 1838 at Santan, probaly the
illegitmatedaughter of Isabella. A baptism has not been found. In 1841 she was living
in the Robert Simpson household. In 1851 she was living with Isabella and her
family at Eary Kellag, Marown. In 1861 she was working as an house servant to
Woodthorp Clark at Cooilingil, Marown.
4.7.8 Elizabeth Corkish (262) was baptized on the 16th of January, 1792, at Rushen.
She married Henry Taylor on the 19th of June, 1823, at Rushen. By early 1851 she
was a widow, living in Surby and working as a farm labourer. There is a burial for
Elizabeth Taylor of Surby aged 68 years on the 21 of July, 1858, at Rushen. See “The
Family History, Volume I Direct Corkish 4 - 7
4.8.1 Catherine Ann Corkish (263) was baptized on the 8th of September, 1811 at
Braddan. She married Hubertius Dubois on the 23rd of December, 1843, at
Braddan. See
4.8.2 Charles Corkish (264) was baptized on the 14th of November, 1813 at Braddan.
At the census of 1841 he was living at Ballanicholas, Marown, and was described as
25 years old labourer. He has not been found in the census for 1851 or 1861 but
there is a burial for Charles Corkish aged 52 years of Dalby, Patrick, recorded at
Rushen on the 22nd of August, 1866. It seems likely that Charles left the Island
before 1851 (possibly for work in England) and either returned after the census of
1861 or requested that he be buried in his homeland.
4.8.3 William Corkish (265)was baptized on the 19th of May, 1816 at Braddan. He did
not survive infancy and was buried on the 26th of April, 1817, at Braddan.
4.8.4 William Corkish(2098) was baptized on the 3rd of January, 1819 at Braddan. He
married Elizabeth Cubbon on the 21 of November, 1839, at Arbory. He was buried
on the 9th of March, 1879, at Arbory, when his age was given as sixty–three years.
See Volume IV for further details.
4.8.5 John Corkish (197)was baptized on the 5th of August, 1821 at Marown. The
census of 1851, 1861 and 1871 seem to consistently place his year of birth as 1825/6.
If, as stated, he was eighty-five years old at his death in 1905, his year of birth
would have been 1819/20. This five year discrepancy has not yet been resolved.
He married two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary McGhee. Although this was strictly
illegal, it was a fairly common practice.
He married Elizabeth Magee at KK Braddan on the 21 of January, 1850, by licence.
At this time he is described as a weaver and was probably employed at Union Mills
Woollen Mill. He was residing in Bigwell Street. By the time of the 1851 census,
John and Elizabeth are living at Ballacaine, Onchan, where their first child is born.
John is again described as a weaver and is presumably working at the Bowring Mill,
which was situated on Ballacain. By December, 1852, the family was living in
Douglas where their second son was born and John is still described as a weaver. By
November, 1855 John had left the weaving trade and is now employed as a labourer
at the Howe farm. At the census in 1861 he and his family were living in Strand
Street, Douglas. In July, 1861, at the birth of Frederick, the family is living at
Millmount in Braddan. The family address is once again in Douglas by December,
1863 when Elizabeth dies. The movement of the family and the changes in John’s
occupation probably reflect the vagaries of the weaving trade.
In 1864 John is once again employed at the Howe farm, his address when he marries
Mary McGhee. The 1871 census shows him living at 46, South Quay, Douglas, and
he is described as a labourer, presumably working at the Howe farm. Mary is not
listed with the family. As she was six or seven months pregnant she may have been
staying with her parents. However, an Ann McGhie, a dyers assistant aged
thirty-seven years, is listed and is probably a younger sister to Mary.
John died on the 24th of January, 1905 and is buried at Kirk Braddan, where he is
noted as being aged eight-five years at his death.
4.8.5.1 Elizabeth Magee (198) was born in approximately 1828. She married John
Corkish (197) on the 21 of January, 1850, at which time she was living at Strang. She
died on the 29th of December, 1863 in Douglas, aged thirty-four years.
4 - 8 Direct Corkish Family History, Volume I
4.8.5.2 Mary McGhee (199)was born in about 1834 at Braddan. She married John
Corkish (197) on the 25th of September, 1864 after the death of her sister Elizabeth.
She died on the 29th of July, 1906, aged seventy-two years.
4.8.6 Samuel Corkish (266) was baptized on the 12th of October, 1823 at Marown. He is
listed in the 1851 census as a Farm Labourer, aged twenty-four and residing at
Kirby Cottage, Braddan. He married Agnes Gilleland on the 24th of December,
1859, at Braddan. The census of 1861, when he is described as a joiner, shows him
living with his mother-in-law, Margaret a widow aged 60 and her family. He had
died by the census of 1861. See See “The Corkish Family” for further details.
4.8.7 Henry Corkish (2099) is assumed to have been born in January, 1829. There is a
burial for Henry, son of William & Margaret Parks on the 30th of January, 1829, at
Braddan. No age is given so it is assumed to be an infant burial.
4.8.8 Daniel Corkish (267) is listed in the 1841 census for Eairy Kellag. He appears to be
living with his widowed father, William (212) and his elder brother, William (265).
Daniel is listed as being twelve years of age, which would make his year of birth
1829, and this is confirmed by the 1851 census. No baptismal record has been
found.
to being returned to Canada. During his time in France he twice served temporary
assignments with the 10th Field Company, Canadian Engineers. He also attended a
training course for batmen in July 1917 and was granted ten days leave in
‘Farmer’. As a returning Canadian Veteran he was able to bring his family to Canada
in the summer of 1919, only his recently married, eldest daughter, Catherine
Elizabeth Corkish, remaining in the Isle of Man. The family settled in Pugwash,
Nova Scotia.
Robert worked as a mason. He built the first brick house in Pugwash (was this the
unfinished house he brought his family to and which his sons helped to finish?). In
He was an expert woodworker, producing many pieces of furniture for the family,
mainly in cedar. Lost an eye …? Like so many men in the construction and logging
industries, Bobby alternated between periods of hard work in the camps and short
sprees in the town where his hard earned money rapidly disappeared into beer. He
spent the later years of his life in the Skid Road area of Vancouver. He died on the
younger sisters. When his mother decided to return to the Isle of Man in May 1936,
Danny accompanied her and his three youngest sisters. For a while the family home
in Pugwash was rented out through Mr. and Mrs. White, friends and neighbours.
Eventually the problem of maintaining the home from the Isle of Man became too
great so the house was sold and the proceeds given to Agnes. In 1993 the daughter,
Laura White, was still living in Pugwash and was visited by Danny when he took
his sister Catherine’s ashes for burial with their father.
