INFORMATION 

The Border 

To enter the Croatian Republic, foreign 

citizens must submit either a passport 

or some other document of 

identification. They will be given a pass 

valid for three months. 

Customs office 

There’s no limit on personal luggage. 

On the state entrance, one needs to 

declare all technical, camping and 

sailing equipment. All pets must have 

an attestation proving they have been 

vaccinated and examined by a 

veterinarian. For motor vehicles, one 

must produce a driver’s license, a green 

card for insurance and authorization 

in case the person driving the vehicle 

is not the owner of the same vehicle. 

Boats and yachts for personal usage 

don’t need to be especially declared. 

One just needs to submit the proprietary 

certificate.

VRSAR AND ITS SURROUNDINGS 

Vrsar is one of the most important tourist centers on the west coast of Istria. It 

is situated between Funtana and the Lim bay. Considering its specific natural 

environment, it is a perfect summer destination. The climate is Mediterranean. 

The winters are mild and summers are long and warm. The winter temperature 

rarely lowers below 0˚C. The average spring temperature is 12,5˚ and the summer 

temperature 23,4˚C. During autumn, the usual temperature is 15,6˚C and during 

winter 5,5˚C. Vrsar is annually exposed to about 2000 hours of sunrays. Most 

common winds are the northeastern wind (bura), the south wind (jugo) and the 

landward breeze (maestral). The northeastern wind usually blows during winter 

(from the continent to the sea), rapidly lowering the temperature. The south wind 

blows from the open sea towards the land, bringing clouds and rain. The landward 

wind is a refreshing wind coming from the sea and is typical for summer days. 

The sea can reach the highest temperature of 26 degrees and the lowest of 8 

degrees. The coastal part is well indented with bays and small islands. The Lim 

canal, which is contiguous with Vrsar, is especially suitable for cultivation of 

shells, primarily mussels and oysters. 

People 

Today Vrsar has about 2650 inhabitants. 

As tourism flourishes, this small fishing 

town transforms into a modern tourist 

center. With the development of 

tourism, the population number 

increases. Due to various historical 

changes, the Vrsar ethnic structure was 

changing continuously. In 1943 Istria 

joined Croatia, that is, Yugoslavia, which 

resulted in most of the Italians 

migrating to Italy. The half-forsaken 

Vrsar was soon settled by families from 

southern Croatia (Dalmatia), especially 

BraË. 

Today many Croatians live in Vrsar. The 

Vrsar inhabitants will understand you 

if you speak Italian, because here, as 

in the rest of Istria, both languages are 

equally used.

1. CROATIA, ISTRIA,VRSAR 

History 

Throughout the history, the name Vrsar 

had many different forms: Ursaria, 

Ursarium, Vrsarium, Orsaria, and others. 

They all have the same root - “ur”, 

which means “a source”. The 

Mediterranean sailors used to take fresh 

drinkable water from a spring on the 

coast between Funtana and Vrsar, hence 

the name Ursaria. 

The Istrian peninsula was most likely 

settled already during the prehistoric 

period. In the vicinity of Vrsar, in the 

pit of St Romuald above the Lim canal, 

traces of the Paleolithic culture were 

discovered. In the prehistoric period, 

several hillocks near Vrsar were 

colonized. Fortifications situated on 

the today’s Vrsar area belonged to the 

first known inhabitants of the Istrian 

peninsula, the Histrian people. They 

occupied most of the peninsula, hence 

the name Histria - Istria. Besides 

agriculture and cattle raising, another 

important economic activity was the 

maritime trade. The development of 

Vrsar started during the Roman rule.

In Vrsar and its surroundings there are 

still traces of Roman culture. With the 

downfall of the Roman Empire, Istria 

succumbs to the Gothic rule. In 538, it 

is annexed to Byzantium, and stays 

there till the 8th century. At the 

beginning of the 7th century, Istria was 

settled by the Slavs. The Byzantine rule 

was shortly broken off by the transitory 

rules of Lombards and Franks. Between 

the 10th and the 18th centuries, Vrsar 

was ruled by PoreË bishops appointed 

by the Roman popes. 

In the 18th century, the famous lover 

and adventurer Giacomo Casanova 

spent two summers in Vrsar, which is 

evident from his memoirs. In the 2nd 

half of the 18th century Vrsar 

underwent the Venetian reign. After 

the fall of the Venetian rule, Vrsar 

succumbs to the Austrian and then 

French rule (Napoleon’s army). Between 

1813 and 1918, it finds itself under the 

Austrian rule again. After the fall of 

the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, 

Istria becomes part of the Italian 

kingdom, which lasts till its capitulation 

in 1943. 

In the 4th century it became an 

important old-Christian center. At the 

time, Vrsar was a significant intersection 

of continental and nautical trade 

connections. 

The vicinity of the Italian Ravenna 

largely influenced the development of 

Vrsar and other Istrian Roman centers. 

In 1941, Hitler and Mussolini occupied 

Yugoslavia. In 1943 Istria was overtaken 

by Germans. At the beginning of May 

1945, it was freed by the Partisans. 

After the liberation, Istria joins 

Yugoslavia, that is, Croatia, and in the 

year 1990 it becomes an independent 

state.

MONUMENTS 

Kaπtel 

In the 12th and 13th centuries, PoreË 

bishops had a small unostentatious 

Roman palace, later (14-18th century) 

turned into the castle we know today. 

The palace used to be a fortification 

protected by bulwarks and towers, 

partially preserved today. Near the 

palace there are two Roman towers 

dating from the 13th century. On the 

southern side of the palace, there are 

two watchtowers with the armourer’s 

shops. On the front surface of the left 

tower there’s a sundial. 

Today’s Kaπtel is completely renovated. 

Three palace stores are transformed 

into apartments for public sale. 

The parochial church of 

St Martin 

In the vicinity of Kaπtel, the church of 

St Martin is settled. Its foundations 

were laid in the 19th century. The 

construction continues over the period 

between 1927 and 1935. The church 

tower was built in 1991. The church 

displays interesting art objects. 

The church of St Foπka 

The church was built in the first half 

of the 17th century. Today this 

renovated church contains a sacral 

collection comprised of many valuable 

artifacts.

The main town gate 

Next to the church of St Foπka we can 

see the main town gate dating from 

the 13th century. The gate used to be 

part of a wall. Above the gate, on the 

stone tablet, there’s a relief depicting 

the lion of St Marko (symbol of the 

Venetian Republic). The lion holds a 

closed book, which points out to the 

fact that it was carved in the period in 

history when the Venetian republic was 

at war. 

The old Roman gate 

The old Roman gate is a bit smaller 

than the main town gate. Made in the 

2nd half of the 12th or the beginning 

of the 13th century, it was also a part 

of a wall. 

The church of St Anton 

Near the old Roman gate there is the 

little church of St Anton of Padova 

dating from the 2nd half of the 17th 

century. It displays characteristics of 

both the Renaissance and the baroque 

style. 

Basilica of St Mary of the 

Sea 

At the Vrsar quay, there’s an interesting 

medieval monument - the basilica of St 

Mary of the Sea. This is an important 

representative of Roman architecture 

in Istria. The first church of St Mary was 

built in the 2nd half of the 8th century. 

In the period between the 8th and the 

12th centuries, the building underwent 

numerous restorations and transformations. 

Today’s appearance of the church 

originates from the 12th century. 

Bulwarks and towers 

The first prehistoric settlement (from 

the Bronze and Iron Age) situated at

the top of a hillock, was enclosed by 

simple bulwarks. During the Middle 

Ages, Vrsar was encompassed by 

bulwarks and towers. In between the 

13th and the 16th centuries, new walls 

were built. Some buildings still display 

fragments of the town bulwarks.

“MONTRAKER” SUMMER 

SCHOOL OF SCULPTURE 

Vrsar proudly wears the name of the 

‘town of sculpture’. Every summer 

at the abandoned Montraker quarry, 

the Montraker school of sculpture 

takes place. It starts every last week 

of September. All the sculptures from 

previous workshops are now 

displayed on the beaches, at motor 

camps, the Vrsar waterfront and the 

city parks.

Istria, the biggest East Adriatic peninsula and the treasury of many 

centuries, displays a specific culture of preparing food, recognized by 

numerous guests as the special quality of this climate. 

The rich Istrian cuisine offers variety of meals. Every village has its own 

typical seasoning and aroma. Still, Istrian cooking stays faithful to its 

tradition, offering its typical traditional meals, such as “maneπtra”(thick 

soup containing noodles, rice, vegetables, etc, and Parmesan) with fennel, 

macaroni, polenta cooked in Istrian way, cabbage with lamb prepared 

under a baking lid. 

Most famous meals are the Istrian smoked ham, pork fillet and sausages. 

Istrian sea is rich with seafood. The most valued fish is the sea bass, as 

well as gilthead and sole. The most famous shells are oysters and mussels. 

The following pages display all the restaurants and inns offering the right 

choice of a good Istrian meal. Wine has been part of the Istrian tradition 

for centuries. The most popular white wines are the Istrian malmsey, the 

grey and white Pinot, Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Among the red wines 

the best are the red Teran, Merlot, “Borgonja”, “Refoπk” and “Hrvatica”. 

We also recommend the famous “istrian rakija”, brandy.

RIBARSKA FE©TA (FISHERMAN’S 

PARTY) is the traditional popular 

party attended by all the 

townspeople. This is the best way to 

learn about the Istrian folklore and 

customs while enjoying games, music 

and excellently prepared seafood. 

It takes place every 2-3 weeks, at the 

very heart of Vrsar (Lungomare) and 

everyone is invited.

Bike tracks 

Every nature lover is free to ride 

his/her bike across the Eco-friendly 

bike paths of Vrsar. You can ride your 

mountain or regular bike on any of 

the three natural tracks of culture 

and history, each of different length: 

the short, the round and the long 

one (alongside the Lim canal through 

the forrest of Konti, and further).
