Memor<strong>and</strong>um of Underst<strong>and</strong>ing in relation to the co-operative management of the<br />
Australian Alps (Revised 6 November 1998)<br />
This MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING is made<br />
on the 6th day of November 1998 between:<br />
Senator the Hon Robert Hill, the <strong>Co</strong>mmonwealth Minister <strong>for</strong> the Environment <strong>and</strong><br />
Heritage being the Minister responsible <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Co</strong>mmonwealth National Parks <strong>and</strong><br />
Wildlife <strong>Co</strong>nservation Act 1975 of the first part;<br />
The Hon Pam Allan MP, Minister <strong>for</strong> the Environment <strong>for</strong> the State of New South<br />
Wales being the Minister having responsibility <strong>for</strong> administration of the National Parks<br />
<strong>and</strong> Wildlife Service of New South Wales of the second part;<br />
Mr Brendan Smyth, MLA, Minister <strong>for</strong> Urban Services <strong>for</strong> the Australian Capital<br />
Territory being the Minister having responsibility <strong>for</strong> the administration of Environment<br />
ACT of the third part; <strong>and</strong><br />
The Hon Marie Tehan MP, Minister <strong>for</strong> <strong>Co</strong>nservation <strong>and</strong> L<strong>and</strong> Management <strong>for</strong> the<br />
State of Victoria being the Minister having responsibility <strong>for</strong> Parks Victoria of the fourth<br />
part;<br />
WHEREAS<br />
1. In June 1986 a Memor<strong>and</strong>um of Underst<strong>and</strong>ing was entered into in relation to the<br />
<strong>Co</strong>-operative Management of the Australian Alps National Parks,<br />
2. The original Memor<strong>and</strong>um of Underst<strong>and</strong>ing was amended <strong>and</strong> re-signed on 2<br />
December 1989 <strong>and</strong> again on the 29 November 1996.<br />
3. Pursuant to the objectives of that Memor<strong>and</strong>um the parties now wish to amend <strong>and</strong><br />
upgrade the Memor<strong>and</strong>um to reflect changes in the <strong>operation</strong> of the Memor<strong>and</strong>um<br />
in the intervening years, <strong>and</strong> to set a focus <strong>for</strong> the future,<br />
4. Under the National Parks <strong>and</strong> Wildlife <strong>Co</strong>nservation Act 1975 of the<br />
<strong>Co</strong>mmonwealth, the Director of National Parks <strong>and</strong> Wildlife has power to per<strong>for</strong>m<br />
any of his/her functions in co-<strong>operation</strong> with a State or, with an authority of a State<br />
or Territory,<br />
5. The National Parks <strong>and</strong> Wildlife Service of New South Wales, Environment ACT,<br />
<strong>and</strong> Parks Victoria, are the agencies responsible <strong>for</strong> the care, control <strong>and</strong> management<br />
within their respective State or Territory of the areas described in Schedule 1.<br />
These areas are part of the same biogeographical unit <strong>and</strong> are hereinafter collectively<br />
referred to as the Australian Alps national parks,<br />
