Appendix 6<br />
3.2 To co-operate in the best-practice management of the areas listed in<br />
Schedule 1 to achieve the following objectives:<br />
a) protection of the unique mountain l<strong>and</strong>scapes;<br />
b) protection of the natural <strong>and</strong> cultural values specific to the Australian<br />
Alps;<br />
c) provision of outdoor recreation <strong>and</strong> tourism opportunities that encourage<br />
the enjoyment <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing of alpine <strong>and</strong> sub-alpine<br />
environments; <strong>and</strong><br />
d) protection of mountain catchments.<br />
4. The parties further agree to the following working arrangements.<br />
The Agencies mentioned in Schedule 1 <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Co</strong>mmonwealth Director of<br />
National Parks <strong>and</strong> Wildlife (hereinafter referred to collectively as “the<br />
Agencies”) will participate in the following working arrangements:<br />
4.1 The Agencies will consult in the preparation of management plans <strong>for</strong> each<br />
area or in amendments to existing plans, <strong>and</strong> shall aim to ensure that<br />
management plans provide <strong>for</strong> complementary policies <strong>and</strong> management<br />
practices throughout the Australian Alps national parks;<br />
4.2 The Agencies will consult on matters of resource data collection, policy<br />
<strong>for</strong>mulation <strong>and</strong>, where possible <strong>and</strong> appropriate, will co-operate in joint<br />
actions <strong>and</strong> other <strong>operation</strong>s relevant to the co-ordinated protection of the<br />
values of the Australian Alps national parks;<br />
4.3 The Agencies will exchange in<strong>for</strong>mation, ideas <strong>and</strong> expertise relevant to the<br />
protection of the nationally important values of the Australian Alps national<br />
parks, <strong>and</strong> will co-operate in the training of staff to manage the Australian<br />
Alps national parks;<br />
4.4 The Agencies will co-operate in the enhancement <strong>and</strong> monitoring of public<br />
awareness about the Australian Alps national parks;<br />
4.5 The Agencies will co-operate to provide opportunities <strong>for</strong> public participation<br />
in the management of the Australian Alps national parks; <strong>and</strong><br />
4.6 Each Agency will, within the areas <strong>for</strong> which it has management responsibility,<br />
strive to adopt complementary recreation management policies <strong>and</strong><br />
where appropriate provide recreation facilities <strong>and</strong> services to enable<br />
visitors to effectively use adjacent areas listed in Schedule 1.<br />
5. A liaison committee (known as the Australian Alps Liaison <strong>Co</strong>mmittee) will be<br />
<strong>for</strong>med in which each Agency will be represented by a senior officer. The function<br />
of this committee will be to co-ordinate the development <strong>and</strong> implementation of<br />
co-operative work programs <strong>and</strong> other arrangements under this Memor<strong>and</strong>um of<br />
Underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />
6. The Australian Alps Liaison <strong>Co</strong>mmittee will ensure:<br />
6.1 That a three-year Strategic Plan is submitted to the Ministers through Heads<br />
of Agencies <strong>for</strong> approval, <strong>and</strong> will be accompanied by a review of the<br />
implementation of the previous Strategic Plan;<br />
