Previous Winners
2005
The Stockholm Industry Water Award was awarded to the Procter
& Gamble Company, USA, in recognition of its development of
the PuR – Purifi er of Water ® drinking water treatment system for
households not served by a potable water supply system, or for
use in disaster relief.
Designed for use in the developing world, where over 1 billion
people still lack access to safe drinking water and an estimated two
million children die each year because of preventable diarrhoeal
diseases, the product consists of a sachet of chemicals commonly
used in conventional municipal water treatment. Each sachet contains
powder to treat 10 litres of water and is effective in removing
bacteria, viruses, parasites and some heavy metals in contaminated
water. Recognising that safe drinking water is a fundamental and
critical need, the company has provided the research and development,
manufacturing and fi nancial resources to develop PuR ® .
Mr. Gregory S. Allgood, Director, Children’s Safe Drinking Water,
Procter & Gamble, received the Prize from Mr. Stig Larsson, Chairman,
Stockholm Water Foundation.
2004
Staple Fibre Division of Grasim Industries Ltd, India, received
the Stockholm Industry Water Award for reducing its water consumption
by 85%, process steam by 51% and electrical usage by 43%
since 1980. Its winning concept builds upon three pillars: reduced
water consumption per unit of production year after year through
increased equipment effi ciency by way of design and technological
improvements, adoption of innovative cleaner process technology
to eliminate the use of zinc in the production of viscose fi bre, and
transparency and openness.
2004
Zenon Environmental Inc. received the Stockholm Industry Water
Award for its innovative development in membrane technology.
ZENON’s low-pressure immersed hollow membranes called
ZeeWeed ® offer a simple, reliable and robust separation process for
treatment to remove various constituents including pathogen microorganisms.
The ZeeWeed ® membrane technology, which resembles a
bundle of seaweeds sweeping in the treatment tank, can be effi ciently
used in industrial as well as municipal plants and leads to signifi cantly
higher treated water quality than traditional methods.
2002
Kaldnes Miljøteknologi AS, a Norwegian environmental technology
company that has developed an innovative, compact and fl exible
biological water treatment process, was the recipient of the
Stockholm Industry Water Award. The patented Moving Bed Process
makes wastewater treatment more effi cient.
Thanks to the technology, treatment facilities in the pulp and paper,
pharmaceuticals, dairy, chemical and food industries, as well
as municipalities, are smaller, more effi cient at cleaning water,
easier to build or upgrade, and more fl exible.
2001
The General Motors de Mexico Ramos Arizpe Complex received
the Stockholm Industry Water Award for its extensive use
of water and wastewater treatment and recycling techniques that
conserve a scarce resource in an area of extreme water scarcity.
The facility enhanced production while at the same time reduced
water consumption through reuse of both industrial and sanitary
wastewater within production processes. By manufacturing more
products with less water, it demonstrated the win-win opportunity
of integrative solutions, for both the region and the production
complex.
2000
Northumbrian Water Limited, UK, received the Stockholm Industry
Water Award for its forward looking initiative at achieving a regional
solution to sewage treatment and disposal, in co-operation with local
governments and regulatory agencies, businesses and other nongovernmental
organisations. It successfully integrated technology
and regional industrial and legislative bodies into a new wastewater
strategy that enabled itself and neighbouring industries to meet regulations,
produce useful end products, bring a dramatic improvement
to the River Tees and be energy- and environmentally effective.
2004 2003 2002 2001 2000

sector, and to minimised water consumption and pollution load
on the environment. The award recognises innovative corporate
development of water and wastewater process technologies,
