Background<br />

The S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Industry</strong> <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Award</strong> aims <strong>to</strong> stimulate<br />

business sec<strong>to</strong>r contributions <strong>to</strong> sustainable development<br />

of water consumption and <strong>to</strong> reduced pollution<br />

load on the environment. The award is established by<br />

the S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Water</strong> Foundation in co-operation with<br />

the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and<br />

the World Business Council for Sustainable Development<br />

<strong>to</strong> stimulate the business sec<strong>to</strong>r’s contribution <strong>to</strong> sustainable<br />

development of water resources, and <strong>to</strong> minimise<br />

water consumption and pollution load on the environment.<br />

Focus on Business and <strong>Industry</strong><br />

The honorary award focuses on business and industry<br />

and recognises innovative approaches <strong>to</strong> the development<br />

of water and wastewater process technologies,<br />

contributions <strong>to</strong> environmental improvement through<br />

improved performance in production processes, new<br />

products and other significant contributions <strong>to</strong> helping<br />

improve the world water situation and contributing<br />

<strong>to</strong> meeting the United Nation’s Millennium Development<br />

Goals for water and sanitation. The award<br />

is presented each August during the World <strong>Water</strong> Week<br />

in S<strong>to</strong>ckholm. In conjunction with the award ceremony<br />

the Laureate company has the opportunity <strong>to</strong> demonstrate<br />

its activities and achievements with a poster<br />

exhibition and an oral presentation.<br />

The <strong>Award</strong> Committee<br />

An international award committee appointed by the Royal<br />

Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences reviews the<br />

nominations and selects the winning company. The committee<br />

is chaired by a representative of the Academy and<br />

contains representatives of the World Business Council<br />

for Sustainable Development, the S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Water</strong> Foundation,<br />

the Global <strong>Water</strong> Partnership, the International<br />

<strong>Water</strong> Association and leading academics of water sciences.<br />

The S<strong>to</strong>ckholm International <strong>Water</strong> Institute, SIWI,<br />

administers the award and serves as its secretariat.<br />

Nominating Procedure<br />

A company or business organisation can be nominated<br />

independently or by itself. The information on achievements<br />

in the nomination should be attested in written<br />

form by at least two well-informed and knowledgeable<br />

persons independent from the nominated candidate.<br />

Other supporting documents (annual reports, etc.) are<br />

welcome, though not required. The nomination text, not<br />

exceeding 10 pages, should describe the specific achievements<br />

of the candidate in a concise manner. Effects in<br />

the form of reduced discharges of pollutants, reduced<br />

water consumption and the improved environmental<br />

situation should be described with statistical figures<br />

as appropriate. The award committee will contact the<br />

nominee for further information if required. Nominations<br />

must be made in English. Guidelines for writing a<br />

nomination can be found at www.siwi.org.<br />

The <strong>Award</strong><br />

The award includes a crystal sculpture and the right <strong>to</strong><br />

use the name and logo of the award in marketing and<br />

communication activities during a three-year period beginning<br />

on the day the award is made.<br />

Nomination Deadline<br />

The deadline for nomination is February 28, <strong>2006</strong>.
