2005<br />

The S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Industry</strong> <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Award</strong> was awarded <strong>to</strong> the Procter<br />

& Gamble Company, USA, in recognition of its development of<br />

the PuR – Purifi er of <strong>Water</strong> ® drinking water treatment system for<br />

households not served by a potable water supply system, or for<br />

use in disaster relief.<br />

Designed for use in the developing world, where over 1 billion<br />

people still lack access <strong>to</strong> safe drinking water and an estimated two<br />

million children die each year because of preventable diarrhoeal<br />

diseases, the product consists of a sachet of chemicals commonly<br />

used in conventional municipal water treatment. Each sachet contains<br />

powder <strong>to</strong> treat 10 litres of water and is effective in removing<br />

bacteria, viruses, parasites and some heavy metals in contaminated<br />

water. Recognising that safe drinking water is a fundamental and<br />

critical need, the company has provided the research and development,<br />

manufacturing and fi nancial resources <strong>to</strong> develop PuR ® .<br />

Mr. Gregory S. Allgood, Direc<strong>to</strong>r, Children’s Safe Drinking <strong>Water</strong>,<br />

Procter & Gamble, received the Prize from Mr. Stig Larsson, Chairman,<br />

S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Water</strong> Foundation.<br />

2004<br />

Staple Fibre Division of Grasim Industries Ltd, India, received<br />

the S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Industry</strong> <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Award</strong> for reducing its water consumption<br />

by 85%, process steam by 51% and electrical usage by 43%<br />

since 1980. Its winning concept builds upon three pillars: reduced<br />

water consumption per unit of production year after year through<br />

increased equipment effi ciency by way of design and technological<br />

improvements, adoption of innovative cleaner process technology<br />

<strong>to</strong> eliminate the use of zinc in the production of viscose fi bre, and<br />

transparency and openness.<br />

2004<br />

Zenon Environmental Inc. received the S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Industry</strong> <strong>Water</strong><br />

<strong>Award</strong> for its innovative development in membrane technology.<br />

ZENON’s low-pressure immersed hollow membranes called<br />

ZeeWeed ® offer a simple, reliable and robust separation process for<br />

treatment <strong>to</strong> remove various constituents including pathogen microorganisms.<br />

The ZeeWeed ® membrane technology, which resembles a<br />

bundle of seaweeds sweeping in the treatment tank, can be effi ciently<br />

used in industrial as well as municipal plants and leads <strong>to</strong> signifi cantly<br />

higher treated water quality than traditional methods.<br />

2002<br />

Kaldnes Miljøteknologi AS, a Norwegian environmental technology<br />

company that has developed an innovative, compact and fl exible<br />

biological water treatment process, was the recipient of the<br />

S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Industry</strong> <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Award</strong>. The patented Moving Bed Process<br />

makes wastewater treatment more effi cient.<br />

Thanks <strong>to</strong> the technology, treatment facilities in the pulp and paper,<br />

pharmaceuticals, dairy, chemical and food industries, as well<br />

as municipalities, are smaller, more effi cient at cleaning water,<br />

easier <strong>to</strong> build or upgrade, and more fl exible.<br />

2001<br />

The General Mo<strong>to</strong>rs de Mexico Ramos Arizpe Complex received<br />

the S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Industry</strong> <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Award</strong> for its extensive use<br />

of water and wastewater treatment and recycling techniques that<br />

conserve a scarce resource in an area of extreme water scarcity.<br />

The facility enhanced production while at the same time reduced<br />

water consumption through reuse of both industrial and sanitary<br />

wastewater within production processes. By manufacturing more<br />

products with less water, it demonstrated the win-win opportunity<br />

of integrative solutions, for both the region and the production<br />

complex.<br />

2000<br />

Northumbrian <strong>Water</strong> Limited, UK, received the S<strong>to</strong>ckholm <strong>Industry</strong><br />

<strong>Water</strong> <strong>Award</strong> for its forward looking initiative at achieving a regional<br />

solution <strong>to</strong> sewage treatment and disposal, in co-operation with local<br />

governments and regula<strong>to</strong>ry agencies, businesses and other nongovernmental<br />

organisations. It successfully integrated technology<br />

and regional industrial and legislative bodies in<strong>to</strong> a new wastewater<br />

strategy that enabled itself and neighbouring industries <strong>to</strong> meet regulations,<br />

produce useful end products, bring a dramatic improvement<br />

<strong>to</strong> the River Tees and be energy- and environmentally effective.<br />
