Cinematheque
L
ocated in a beautiful century-old stone complex facing
the walls of the Old City, the Jerusalem Cinematheque
(also known as the Jerusalem Film Center) is a key fixture
on the capital’s cultural scene, providing entertainment,
educational activities, and a unique meeting place for
the Jerusalem’s mosaic of ethnic and religious communities.
The Cinematheque moved in 1981 to its current premises,
which were restored and rebuilt with the help of the
Jerusalem Foundation, the culmination of three decades
of effort and vision. Each year, it attracts some 500,000
film-lovers to regularly scheduled screenings, symposia
and workshops, and to its prestigious International
Film Festival. Today, hampered by lack of space, one
third of all film screenings are sold out and thousands
of potential viewers are turned away each month. In
addition, new research and programming initiatives are
limited. To enable the Cinematheque to respond to
growing needs, the Jerusalem Foundation is working to
help the Cinematheque expand its facilities with the
construction of a new wing.
Funding needed: $3-5 million
