This innovative learning opportunity was very favorably received by both nursing and theatre student participants. Beginning November 2011, Liberty Hospital partnered with the Jewell Simulation Center to provide fresh learning experiences for their new Nurse Residency program. Hospital clinical educators and Jewell simulation faculty collaborate bi-monthly in our center to impact real-world clinical knowledge and skills. This 2012 has been a very active year for the Jewell Simulation Center with clinical learning opportunities provided each and every month. The overwhelming feedback from Jewell students and Liberty Hospital nurse residents is that they want more simulation learning experiences in the future. Plans are underway to continue full speed ahead in 2013 to implement top-notch nursing education in the Jewell simulation environment. Kurt Reed ’13 and Jayne Tedder ’13
William Jewell College professor receives DAISY Award William Jewell College Department of Nursing in Liberty, Missouri, joined with the Daisy Foundation this year to recognize a nursing faculty member as they have profound impact on their students, patient care and the profession of nursing. Kristen Blochlinger, BSN, RN, was the 2012 Daisy Faculty Award Recipient. She was nominated by students for her dedication to the nursing profession, nursing education and students. Blochlinger joined the faculty as a clinical adjunct in 2010. She became a full-time faculty member in 2011 as the Department’s Nursing Arts Laboratory Coordinator and Instructor. She will complete her MSN in Nursing Education this fall and plans to teach in the classroom as well. One student’s nomination read, “Professor Blochlinger’s actions are a constant reminder about the importance of nursing professors to William Jewell’s values and student success. She cares about the future of nursing and is a passionate advocate for others. The nursing profession remains a respected field of study because of people like her. This may be her first year as a full-time professor, but her impact is palpable throughout the department.” Faculty noted Blochlinger’s enthusiasm for teaching and caring, and the senior class also nominated her to be the 2012 nursing pinning speaker. The Daisy Faculty Award was established by the Daisy Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick. They created this national award to demonstrate appreciation to faculty for their commitment and inspirational influence on their nursing students and to say thank you to nursing faculty everywhere. Teaming Up Against Breast Cancer First Row: Lisa Carrillo ’13, Erin Manley ’14, Sara Ray (daughter), Kris Ray ’13; Second Row: Ashley Langley ’13, Kurt Reed ’13, Erin Woods ’13, Samantha Ross ’14, Megan Cunningham ’14, Lindsay Metcalfe ’14 Lisa Carrillo ’13 led the Jewell Nursing Students team for the 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Kansas City, MO on October 27th for the American Cancer. The team raised a total of $460 for Breast Cancer awareness. Junior Nursing Student Travels to Haiti this summer Emily Gates, nursing major, in collaboration with fellow pre-med student, Caty Compton, spent six weeks living, learning and growing with the people of La Victoire, Haiti. Funded by the Jewell 2012 Pritchard Humanitarian Award, the students traveled to La Victoire which is located in the northern part of Haiti. It is a small village of about 6,000 inhabitants, and it does not have the luxuries of electricity or running water. The students connected with Haiti Missions, Inc., a mission organization that recognizes the irreplaceable role that education plays in the development of a community. Building on their healthcare skills and using education as their vehicle, they were able not only to teach the importance of basic healthcare but to learn more about the infrastructure of healthcare in developing nations. Serving these marginalized and under-served populations in Haiti, Emily and Caty recognized this opportunity to seek justice but also practice compassion and learn to appreciate the joy of simplicity. London-Paris Healthcare trip for May 2014 the Department is planning a 9-day London- Paris Healthcare trip for May 2014 through EF college Study tours.
