A World
of Possibilities
Jewell Nursing Students Awarded the First Journey Grants
William Jewell’s new Journey Grants
provide funding to make the Jewell
experience one-of-a-kind. Over100 students
were funded to discover something new
about themselves and the world. Nineteen
nursing students alone were awarded over
$35,500 for medical mission trips, research
study, and nursing abroad.
“Journey Grants open up a whole
world of possibilities for Jewell students,”
said Dr. Anne Dema, Provost of the College.
“We believe that our students’ work
in the classroom is only a part of the Jewell
experience. Journey Grants enable students
to customize their education and pursue
experiences to strengthen their college
education.” Jewell students who have
completed their sophomore year may
apply for a self-designed grant.
elizabeth Radford,
a junior nursing
student, will be
a camp nurse
intern at a
summer camp for children of prisoners.
Elizabeth explained, “Much of my time will
be helping with medication administration,
applying first aid care and educating campers
in healthy lifestyle. The Journey Grant is
allowing me to experience a very unique
side of nursing practice.”
Jeremiah Sawdon,
also a junior nursing
student, will be going to
africa to help with healthcare
teaching in HIV clinics.
Jeremiah stated, “The Journey Grant gives
me the capability to step out of my comfort
zone and serve a community that needs
evidenced-based healthcare. Without
the Journey Grant, this trip would
not be a reality for me.” Vicki Meek,
Chair of the Department of
Nursing, believes this is a
transformative experience
that enhances the nursing
education at Jewell and
will positively impact their
future nursing careers.
The Journey Grant encourages
adventure and discovery.
Letter from the Chair
Vicki Meek, MS, RN, CNE
Chair/Associate Professor of Nursing
Dear Alumni, Students and Community:
May you find joy in reading the following pages which will provide an overview of what students and
faculty have been doing this past year and what plans are in place for the future. It is an exciting time to be
in nursing, and nursing on The Hill is vibrant. You will see changes on the Quad with the anticipated Fall 2013
opening of the College’s Pryor Learning Commons.
In May, we graduated the largest number of students in our history (87); however, we continue our
commitment to maintain the highest quality of education for our future nursing professionals. In the
following pages, you will find information highlighting how our curriculum is continually reviewed and
enhanced. We now are offering a 3-year option for select students who have successfully completed
college hours prior to entering Jewell. The direction of our simulation experiences is phenomenal being
fostered with a collaborative partnership with Liberty Hospital to provide simulation proficiencies for their
nurses. We are planning to expand that outreach to our rural clinical agencies. Within Jewell, we have
aligned with the Theater Department to provide a mental health simulation. We plan to combine experiences
for simulations between our pre-med majors and religion majors (to emphasize ethical areas of practice)
this next year to enrich the offerings for students. This is the advantage of being on a liberal arts campus
surrounded by those who encourage critical reasoning.
In the past two years, students have produced impressive Quality Improvement projects, taking their
research to the clinical setting and into their first clinical practice positions. We are proud to have
pledged, along with over 500 nursing organizations, to support the Joining Forces Campaign to educate
future nursing professionals to treat soldiers and their families dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder,
traumatic brain injury and depression. You will read about the global outreach along with remarkable
accomplishments locally of our faculty and students. I hope you will be assured we are listening to the
needs of our community and patients and in concert with the IOM Future of Nursing report to provide
students with the skills needed in today’s healthcare arena.
This past year, we were one of seven schools in Missouri to receive a $149,673 grant from the Missouri State
Board of Nursing and Department of Higher Education. With this funding, we are increasing our Simulation
Center to include an Intensive Care room and a SimJr for use in our Family-Centered Nursing course. We are
also collaborating with rural clinical partners to expand clinical offerings for our students. As part of this
grant, funding is available for faculty to attend conferences and receive support for the pursuit of advanced
education.
I am humbled and grateful to present the 2012 Vital Signs for your reading pleasure. Please visit us when you
are in the area or drop us an email to keep us posted on your news. You continue to be a vital link to
our future.
Warmly,
Jewell Simulation Center in 2012
by Jan Huster and Jan Witzke
The Jewell Simulation Center took off like
a meteor once completed in October 2011.
Our project goals include providing a
simulation learning experience in every
clinical course, and we have almost
reached that goal within one year’s time.
Additionally, we have doubled the number
of simulation experiences for our Fundamentals
of Nursing, Health Assessment,
and Family-Centered Nursing students.
We are most fortunate to have Jewell faculty
willing to lead simulation, allowing students
to be observers when it seems more
beneficial for student learning. Professor
Leesa McBroom led a pediatric simulation
and took our new pediatric simulator, SimJr,
to the classroom. Funding to purchase
Laerdal’s SimJr and our new SimPad, which
can be used to operate SimJr, was provided
by the Missouri Department of Higher
Education and State Board Nursing
Education Incentive Grant received by the
Department of Nursing in December 2011.
Professor Lori Bunton and Professor McBroom
also partnered to provide a combined
labor, delivery and neonatal assessment
simulation. Laerdal’s Mama Natalie Birthing
Jan Witzke and Jan Huster, faculty, accepting 2012
senior gift
Simulator was gifted to the department
from the Nursing Class of 2012. Professors
Nichole Spencer and Melissa Timmons
created a new simulation scenario to
enhance learning in their Gerontology
Nursing course. Participating students have
commented positively about these
immersive learning experiences.
Nursing simulation is touching other
departments on campus as well. During
the Fall 2012, theatre students and theatre
faculty Professor Nathan Wyman and
Professor Natasha Martin joined forces
2012 senior gift, Mama Natalie, opened by
Brian Warne ’12 and Janet Fiegel ’12.
From left to right: Jeremiah Sawdon ’14, Elizabeth Radford ’14, Hana Farah ’13 and Professor Jan Witzke.
with Professor Timmons, to create a Mental
Health ‘day room’ simulation enacted in
Peters Theater for our nursing students.
This innovative learning opportunity was
very favorably received by both nursing
and theatre student participants.
Beginning November 2011, Liberty Hospital
partnered with the Jewell Simulation Center
to provide fresh learning experiences
for their new Nurse Residency program.
Hospital clinical educators and Jewell
simulation faculty collaborate bi-monthly
in our center to impact real-world clinical
knowledge and skills.
This 2012 has been a very active year for the
Jewell Simulation Center with clinical learning
opportunities provided each and every
month. The overwhelming feedback from
Jewell students and Liberty Hospital nurse
residents is that they want more simulation
learning experiences in the future.
Plans are underway to continue full
speed ahead in 2013 to implement
top-notch nursing education in the
Jewell simulation environment.
William Jewell College professor receives
DAISY Award
William Jewell College Department of
Nursing in Liberty, Missouri, joined with
the Daisy Foundation this year to recognize
a nursing faculty member as they have
profound impact on their students, patient
care and the profession of nursing. Kristen
Blochlinger, BSN, RN, was the 2012 Daisy
Faculty Award Recipient. She was nominated
by students for her dedication to the nursing
profession, nursing education and students.
Blochlinger joined the faculty as a clinical
adjunct in 2010. She became a full-time
faculty member in 2011 as the Department’s
Nursing Arts Laboratory Coordinator and
Instructor. She will complete her MSN in
Nursing Education this fall and plans to teach
in the classroom as well. One student’s
nomination read, “Professor Blochlinger’s
actions are a constant reminder about the
importance of nursing professors to William
Jewell’s values and student success. She
cares about the future of nursing and is a
passionate advocate for others. The nursing
profession remains a respected field of
study because of people like her. This may
be her first year as a full-time
professor, but her impact is palpable
throughout the department.” Faculty noted
Blochlinger’s enthusiasm for teaching and
caring, and the senior class also nominated
her to be the 2012 nursing pinning speaker.
The Daisy Faculty Award was established
by the Daisy Foundation in memory of
J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an
auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family
was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring
and compassion of the nurses who cared
for Patrick. They created this national award
to demonstrate appreciation to faculty for
their commitment and inspirational influence
on their nursing students and to say thank
you to nursing faculty everywhere.
Junior Nursing Student Travels to Haiti
this summer Emily Gates,
nursing major, in
collaboration with fellow
pre-med student,
Caty Compton, spent six
weeks living, learning and growing with
the people of La Victoire, Haiti. Funded by
the Jewell 2012 Pritchard Humanitarian
Award, the students traveled to La Victoire
which is located in the northern part of
Haiti. It is a small village of about 6,000
inhabitants, and it does not have the
luxuries of electricity or running water.
The students connected with Haiti
Missions, Inc., a mission organization
that recognizes the irreplaceable role that
education plays in the development of a
community. Building on their healthcare
skills and using education as their vehicle,
they were able not only to teach the
importance of basic healthcare but to
learn more about the infrastructure of
healthcare in developing nations.
Serving these marginalized and
under-served populations in Haiti, Emily
and Caty recognized this opportunity to
seek justice but also practice compassion
and learn to appreciate the joy of simplicity.
FOUND: NURSE WHO CAN SING
by Leesa McBroom and Nichole Spencer
Imagine Florence Nightingale
dressed in pressed white,
angelic scrubs with choir robes.
You can find nurses here who
can sing! In the Department
of Nursing we have many
nursing students who successfully
complete the nursing degree
while participating in the music
program at Jewell. Nursing
students participate in Chapel
Choir, Concert Choir, Jewell Jazz band and
Liberty Symphony Orchestra.
When interviewing individual alumni and
current nursing students about their college
experience as a student, singer, and musician,
the responses were overwhelmingly positive.
They express the significance of having
dedication, self-discipline and a passion
for music, all necessary for success in both
programs. These singing angels expressed
gratitude for the
flexibility, understanding
and support provided
by the Department
of Music conductors
and Department of
nursing faculty.
one such singer is
Hanna Powers. Hanna
has been a member
of the choir since
beginning Jewell in 2009. Hanna
commented, “I really like choir. It has
been a stress reliever for me during the
nursing program. I also enjoy performing
for people and learning new music.” Hanna
recently performed in the Department of
Music’s An Evening of Comedy in Music
November 11 as both actress and singer.
by Joyce Bouyear, RN, Partners in Health
in 1999, a new program,
“Partners in Health
services,” marked a
collaborative effort
between William Jewell
college and Liberty
hospital. The idea of a
hospital and college forming a partnership to
create programs to take care of the whole
person–body, mind and spirit–in a faith or
social community was a unique concept at
that time. The Partners in Health Services
mission is to support healthcare professionals
within congregations and social communities
that can promote wellness and
effective management of illness from a
holistic perspective.
Who would these health professionals be?
Nurses, of course! They take wellness and
prevention to organizations where people
gather. Churches are an ideal site since they
are a gathering place for all generations,
but many other venues can benefit as well.
These nurses serve as health educators,
personal health counselors, referral
resources or program facilitators.
The first class graduated from a four-day
training course on parish nursing in October
2000, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and
received 23 nursing contact hours. In 2005,
the American Nursing Association (ANA)
changed the name of the specialty from
Parish Nursing to Faith Community Nursing.
As of today, 332 Faith Community Nurses
have been trained and the program has
expanded to 34 contact hours. The next
class will be offered in May 2013. Anyone
interested in taking the class, please
Jewell Nursing Student
Experiences Nurse Externship
by Josue G. Villarreal ’13
I wanted to do something different for the summer between my junior and
senior years. Having been extremely involved for the previous summers,
I had already traveled to Honduras a couple of times. Being involved with
organizations on campus and as a distance runner, I diligently trained in
order to remain one of the best on the cross country/track team. I believed
I was ready and prepared to do something that required a lot of responsibility
in the nursing field. A few months before the spring semester began, I
attended the Jewell Nursing Employment Fair. It was at the fair that I
learned about a nursing externship and was instantly interested. A
nursing summer externship is a paid clinical experience available for a
junior nursing student. Under the supervision of a nurse preceptor, the
student performs direct patient care, communicates with other interdisciplinary
teams and participates in family education during 12-hour shifts. After
further research, it became apparent that nursing externship programs
across the nation, such as Mayo Clinic, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and
Barnes-Jewish Hospital are highly competitive, and I began to have
second thoughts.
When I received the phone call from a human resources representative at
Children’s Mercy Hospital, I was almost speechless. After all those interviews,
applications and resumes, I knew that I was going to have the opportunity
to advance and strengthen my clinical skills at a great hospital. I was offered
a job on “2 Henson,” which is the Neurosurgical, General Surgery, Trauma,
and Burn Unit. There were a total of eight externs throughout the hospital
each assigned to a different unit. There were students from University of
Missouri, University of Kansas, Brigham Young University, and Truman State.
At first, I was really intimidated to meet them, but we all meshed very well
from the start and got along great!
I still remember the very first time I walked in to Children’s Mercy Hospital.
It almost felt like I was in a playground. The atmosphere at Children’s Mercy
provides nursing students a good place to learn and grow. I have yet to go
to another hospital where physicians, nurse practitioners and surgeons
make the best experience for nursing students. When I was observing in the
operating room, the neurosurgeon stopped and moved out of the way to
explain what he was doing and offered me the opportunity to stand next to
him throughout the rest of the procedure. The staff really enjoyed teaching
externs and were very supportive. I felt as if I was being treated like a king
from the beginning. However, remembering that the program was competitive,
each unit had high expectations, and it was important for externs to
remain focused.
There were many opportunities I had as a summer extern that I would not
have experienced during a normal clinical rotation. This summer was the
first time that I broke down in tears because of a patient and their family.
It is amazing how sometimes you can never forget some patients or their
families, even if you tried, because of the impact they had on you. I am
confident that I am heading in the right direction to becoming the most
compassionate nurse I can be.
Josue is a senior nursing student graduating in May 2013. He has
balanced nursing school with being an athlete on both the Cross Country
and Track and Field teams. He has been an athlete mentor for other nursing
students as well as served on the department’s Curriculum Committee.

Jewell’s brand new Pryor Learning Commons and Welcome Center under Construction
This $15 million project will provide Jewell
students with a state-of-the-art, modern
center for collaboration and engagement.
Construction of the new facility began this
summer and is scheduled to be completed
in 2013. Some of the features will include:
• expanded access to on-line journals
and research tools
• wireless and flexible computer labs
• video conferencing facilities
• media recording and editing suites
• engaging spaces for faculty
colloquiums, campus and
community lectures
• flexible and comfortable spaces and
furniture inviting conversation
and comfort
• café with late-night access
• a commitment to sustainability and
“green” construction and
operation principles
• The Center for Engaged Learning
• The Center for Justice and Sustainability
• The Center for Global Studies
Construction started this summer for Pryor
Learning Commons on the site where
Greene Hall once stood. The pictures show
Greene Hall one year ago, the building site
earlier this summer, and the current construction
of the building.
Fully funded by donors, the naming gift
was received by alumni Fred Pryor ’56
college like William Jewell is to prepare
students for leadership and service in the
Artist rendering of the entrance facing out from the Hill to Greene Stadium
future. We are pleased to be able to play a
part in that process,” Fred said. Other key
contributors include the J.E. and L.E. Mabee
Foundation, the Hall Family Foundation
and the William T. Kemper Foundation.
President David Sallee explains that the past
several years have brought revolutionary
changes in library services, rapid evolution
of computerized information processing
and shifts in how students learn. “We
envision the new Pryor Learning
Commons as the heart of intellectual life
on campus, a center of vital technology
and a launch point for engaged learning,”
Dr. Sallee said.
Hall Family Foundation Vice President
Angela Andresen McClelland voiced
support for the project. “We have long
appreciated Jewell’s emphasis on rigorous
educational experiences and we applaud
plans to build on its outstanding academic
reputation by doing what is required to
attract the best faculty and students to the
College and to Kansas City.”
