evening with a concert and
a meal over at Toby Keith’s
while the kids are hanging out
on the other side watching a
movie.”
One unforeseen selling
point of facility’s rebirth was
nostalgia. “Every Dallas native
who was living there from ‘95
until today who came through
that theater last week when
we were giving our sneak peak
tour said ‘I came here every
Saturday in high school or
college,’ or ‘This is where I had
my first date!’” says AmStar
Media Contact Justin Scott.
Needless to say, the rightsizing
of Amstar 14 also
includes state-of-art exhibition
niceties like stadium highback
rocking chairs in all its 14 auditoriums,
six of which are built for 3D digital
projectors controlled from an iPod Touch.
In redefining its place as an entertainment
hub, AmStar 14 anticipates becoming
a more culturally diverse venue and
seeks to meet the needs of Dallas’ growing
Hispanic community. “They have
voiced their appreciation that we and our
partners are reinvesting in the area, and
through that hopefully revitalizing the
area,” says Moriarity. “We believe in it and
we think it’s going to be a cool and unique
experience and will demonstrate definitely
our commitment.”
Case in point, on AmStar 14’s October
14 opening weekend, the theater featured
nostalgic new reboots like Footloose and
The Thing alongside screenings of the
Spanish-language film Labios Rojas (Red
Lips).
AmStar 14 also hopes to bring not only
joy and entertainment to the community,
but also ample employment opportunities.
“We’ve initially hired up to 80 total
employees at this point and as we get into
the holiday season we expect that to get
into the low 100s,” says Moriarity.
Whether AmStar’s right-sizing process
is the shape of things to come, or just a
great experiment, only time can tell. “I
know that it’s not extremely common and
so to some degree we may be proving out
a theory,” says Moriarity. “But we’re confident
that it will work. It just requires the
right combination of partners and design
and the right area.”
