Years ago I rode France’s excellent fast train, the TGV, from Lyon to Paris. It was an amazing ride – fast, smooth, comfortable and competitively priced. This is a train that actually does 300 kilometres per hour. What is remarkable is that when you go into a curve, you can still walk down the aisle of the train without feeling like you are being thrown against the side. I think this has something to do with the suspension system and track design. It would be my fervent wish that we could duplicate something like that in Alberta. If we did, I would even take a trip to Edmonton just for the ride.

Trico Homes’ Wayne Chiu Donates $3 Million to<br />
Bow Valley College<br />

On January 22, 2014, Bow Valley College received<br />
an unprecedented donation <strong>in</strong> the amount of $3 million<br />
from <strong>Calgary</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>essman and philanthropist<br />
Wayne Chiu. Founder and owner of <strong>Calgary</strong>-based<br />
Trico Homes, Chiu was a board member with Bow<br />
Valley College for six years until November of 2013<br />
and has long been a supporter of social enterprise<br />
and <strong>in</strong>novation.<br />
In honour of Chiu’s donation, Bow Valley College’s<br />
School of <strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong> has been officially<br />
renamed the Chiu School of <strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong>. Although the<br />
community college has been offer<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess programm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for several years, the School of <strong>Bus<strong>in</strong>ess</strong><br />
officially opened <strong>in</strong> September of 2012 and offers<br />
non-credit cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g education as well as one-year<br />
certificates and two-year diplomas <strong>in</strong> fields rang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from bus<strong>in</strong>ess adm<strong>in</strong>istration to <strong>in</strong>terior design.<br />
“I really believe <strong>in</strong> lifelong learn<strong>in</strong>g,” says Chiu. “Because<br />
I am an entrepreneur and a bus<strong>in</strong>essman, I really believe<br />
for anyone to advance their career or life, they need to be<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ually learn<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />
Chiu adds, “It makes me feel really proud as a local bus<strong>in</strong>essman<br />
that we are able to donate money to the school<br />
where my passion lies, and at the same time, it makes me<br />
extremely fortunate to be able to give back to the community<br />
<strong>in</strong> this way.”<br />
