(vii) Trash chutes shall not be used to transfer biomedical waste.<br />

(viii) Biomedical waste shall not be placed into the general waste stream unless<br />

contained and treated.<br />

(ix) Sharps shall not be placed into the general waste stream. Disposal.<br />

(c) Disposal<br />

All biomedical waste that has been contained as described in Section 305(3)(b)<br />

shall be disposed of at a biomedical waste handling facility permitted to receive<br />

such waste.<br />

All human or animal body parts, fetuses, and other pathological specimens<br />

shall be disposed of either by appropriate interment, incineration or other<br />

method approved by the <strong>Health</strong> Officer.<br />

(iii) Untreated liquid and liquefied biomedical waste may be disposed of by release<br />

into a sanitary sewage system, if this practice is approved by the providing<br />

sewer utility, provided that the <strong>Health</strong> Officer shall have the authority to<br />

require the treatment of any biomedical liquid, according to requirements<br />

specified by the <strong>Health</strong> Officer, prior to release into a sanitary sewage system if<br />

deemed necessary to protect the public health.<br />

(iv) Biomedical waste shall be disposed of on a regular basis to avoid nuisance<br />

conditions. If any nuisance condition exists, the <strong>Health</strong> Officer shall have the<br />

authority to require a specific disposal or collection frequency.<br />

Sharps must be contained in accordance with Section 305(3)(b)(iv) and<br />

prepared for disposal by a means that protects medical handlers, solid waste<br />

workers and the public from injury. The disposal of sharps shall be limited to<br />

the following methods unless prohibited by the requirements of Chapter 70.95K<br />

RCW, Biomedical Wastes:<br />

(A) Depositing properly contained sharps at a facility that has agreed to<br />

accept home generated sharps Home generated sharps may not be<br />

deposited into the normal household waste stream.<br />

Depositing properly contained sharps at a medical facility or pharmacy<br />

that provides a program to dispose of sharps waste and that meets the<br />

requirements of these regulations.<br />

Using a permitted biomedical waste collection service.<br />

(D) Other methods approved by the <strong>Health</strong> Officer.<br />

Transfer of Biomedical Waste. Any biomedical waste generator, who produces<br />

untreated biomedical waste, shall have said waste collected and transported by<br />

a permitted biomedical waste collection service.<br />
