Promoting Socrates
Sweden: Co-operation Socrates Promoters, National
Socrates Agency and Higher Education Institutions
It was clear from the start that there would be a
lot of support from the NSA and the HEIs in
Sweden. It turned out that all the promotion
trips, travels and subsistence of the Socrates
Promoters were paid by the NSA and the HEIs.
There were presentations of SOTM in national
launching events, national meetings of international
co-ordinators of the HEIs and info-days
and seminars of all the relevant Swedish HEIs.
One sign of the close co-operation and partnership
with the NSA is that I am going to go to the
meeting of the national Socrates steering group
and give a final report evaluation on the SOTM
I. The awareness has really been raised within
the HEIs and one could consider me as a SOTMcelebrity
in Sweden. Mobility people in HEIs
know me wherever I go. This shows the needs
that the HEIs and NSAs have to reach the students
with information and also highlights a
problem with this task; to know what the students
are interested in and what information
should be given. The bodies recognised the need
for students to promote Socrates to other students
and welcomed these events with open
arms and supported them strongly.
As a Socrates promoter, I have been given the
opportunity to share my experiences with other
students around the country. As I have been
studying abroad myself three times I have made
lots of mistakes (and some successes) that I
could now share with others. I have been asked
questions about everything from very technical
aspects to “what’s the weather like there”. I have
also been interviewed several times by magazines,
radio and TV-channels about the project.
Poland: Socrates Action Week 2000 in Warsaw
18
AEGEE has a tradition of being active in the field
of Socrates Programme. Socrates Action Weeks
and Days are a part of this tradition.
This autumn the Socrates Action Week in
Warsaw was prepared by the Socrates Working
Group, which was launched as a supporting
group for the Warsaw Socrates Promoter. The
Warsaw Socrates Action Week aimed not only at
presenting Socrates Programme, but also other
Community programmes – such as Leonardo and
Youth. The presentations were accompanied by
stands at the major universities and a big
Socrates Party. Local and national coordinators
of the progarmmes took part in this event,
accompanied by in-coming Erasmus students
and students who have already been on Erasmus
exchanges. All in all, a highly informative and
popular event was prepared telling Polish students
how to benefit from the Community programmes
and encouraging them to do so. Putting
it together in numbers Socrates Action Week in
Warsaw looks as follows: 7 presentations, 9 days
of stands, hundreds of leaflets – all this at 4 major
universities, where we managed to reach more
than 1000 students, through the work of 20 people
co-ordinated by Socrates promoter.
The student mobility situation in Poland is difficult,
but, I guess it doesn’t differ much from what
is happening in other Eastern participants of the
Socrates programme. Mobility is extremely popular
amongst students although information
about the mobility programmes remains poorly
spread. The biggest obstacle remains the budget
of the Socrates programme in Poland, which prevents
all those who wish to study abroad from
fulfilling their dreams.
