Manja Klemencic ESIB Valentina di Mari ESN Sebastian Klüsener AEGEE Sami Kontola ESIB Dear reader, The publication in front of you is about to lead you in the world of experiences within project Socrates on the move, conducted in the year 2000 by three leading European student associations ESIB-The National Unions of Students in Europe, AEGEE-Europe and Erasmus Students Network (ESN). Project, aiming at information providing on SOCRATES II Programme of the European Commission to students, has developed into more than 500 organised promotional events by students Socrates promoters all over Europe, 3 thematic regional seminars, and two statutory meetings of the informal network of Socrates promoters: the training in Brussels in March and final conference in December in Napoli. Besides information providing in student tailored manner, the promoters have collected valuable information on obstacles to implementation of the Socrates programme and mobility in general; trends in mobility related also to implementation of Bologna declaration; specific information needs for certain groups of student population; and alike. This project would have not been possible without true commitment of the members of the Steering group and support of the European Commission, DG Education and Culture. Many thanks go to the experts from the Commission who have contributed to the training of Socrates Promoters and especially Mr. Massimo Gaudina, responsible for the project. As new generations of students are entering every year our higher education institutions all over Europe we wish to continue to inform them about the possibilities and opportunities that exist for them within the Socrates II Programme. 5
Project Description 6 Socrates on the Move Making Students Move The project has been a one year joint venture of ESIB – The National Unions of Students in Europe, AEGEE-Europe and ESN - Erasmus Student Network, supported and conducted in co-operation with European Commission, DG Education and Culture, aiming at: · providing students in participating countries with clear information on what they can expect from their respective higher education institution within the Socrates II – programme and what they can not expect; what are their rights concerning the mobility and what they can ask for from their respective higher education institution; · providing students and student organisations with possibilities to give feedback to European institutions on implementation and impact of Socrates programme; · building a close co-operation between main European student associations, the European Commission and other institutions working with mobility-related issues; · creating a tradition of having a network of student Socrates promoters and thus maintain the flow of information on Socrates programme to students. 46 students Socrates promoters have been the main actors in the project. At training in Brussels they have been provided with basic information regarding Socrates Programme and its actions, as well as Leonardo, Youth, Tempus and Third Countries programmes. Lots of further information gathering and adjusting to national situation has been done upon their return back to their respective countries and prior to beginning of their activities. As student ambassadors of Socrates programme they have worked together and complemented to variety of informational and promotional activities organised by National Socrates Agencies, International Offices of Higher Education Institutions, student associations and others. Their events vary from presentations to student groups in classrooms, to radio shows, stands at information fairs like the EXPO 2000 in Hannover, creating web pages, writing articles in student and national newspapers, presenting students in bodies and institutions dealing with implementation of Socrates Programme and many more. The project has developed into more than 500 promotional events organised and attended by Socrates promoters all over Europe, 3 thematic regional seminars: and two statutory meetings of the informal network of Socrates promoters: the training in Brussels in March and final conference in December in Napoli. Besides information providing in student tailored manner, the promoters have collected a valuable information on obstacles to implementation of the Socrates programme and obstacles to mobility as such; trends in mobility related to implementation of Bologna declaration; specific information needs for certain groups of student population, and alike. This feedback will be valuable contribution of the project to the work of the European Commission and its evaluation of the Socrates Programme. The plans for continuity of work of Socrates promoters have been discussed at the final conference in Napoli. All three associations are committed to continuos information proving on Socrates programme among the students and especially every new generation of students.
