Off the roads and onto the rails
Every logistician knows that there is no such thing as
the perfect mode of transport. That’s why DB Schenker
combines the specific benefits of each one in its multimode
supply chains – for example, the outstanding
ecological balance of trains with the flexibility of trucks.
They handle as much freight as possible by rail. Because
its own trains almost exclusively run on environmentally
friendly electricity, it can reduce emissions by
up to 80 percent compared to conventional transport
by road. Its trucks then pick up and collect the goods.
They can reach the most remote corners of Europe so
that customers can enjoy the convenience of door-todoor
transport, even if they have no rail access of their
own. This reduces overall carbon emissions by up to
60 percent.
DB SCHENKERrailog takes over conventional wagon
load freight, special rail projects and intermodal
container shipments including value added services.
With our online tool Eco TransIT, customers may calculate
the carbon footprint of individual shipments by
comparing the environmental impact of shipments by

We can all do something for the environment –
for example using state-of-the-art trucks
DB Schenker constantly upgrades its truck fleet and uses
more and more vehicles that meet the Euro 5 standard. It
also tests new fuel mixtures to reduce the trucks’ consumption.
By collecting transports at various hubs in its
own network, DB Schenker increases vehicle utilization,
because fewer deadhead trips mean less emissions. However,
the human factor is still the most important when
it comes to protecting the environment. DB Schenker
makes sure that all drivers and those of its contractors
are trained in how to drive efficiently, using simple
measures to significantly reduce fuel consumption and
carbon dioxide emissions.

Each ECO 2 PHANT stands for five tons of carbon dioxide reduced. DB SCHENKERrailog reduces up to 50 tons of carbon dioxide per million ton-kilometers compared to conventional truck transport,
equivalent to ten ECO 2 PHANTS.
