Abbreviations
AVV
In the wagonload system, individual wagons
or groups of wagons are routed from point
to point through a rail network for regular
or sporadic transport operations (compare
“wagonload traffic”)
Transshipment point with infrastructure
access/connection for various carriers and
the option for interim storage of goods.
System of end-to-end consignment supervision
(e.g. determining current and past locations).
The exact location and path of freight can be
completely reconstructed and retraced.
Generally used to denote the utilization of
a section of the railway network between
two locations at a given time by a train of
a given type.
Special facility for loading from one type
of carriage to another.
Consignments are brought by truck to the
terminal where the loading unit (container,
swap-body or semi-trailer) is transshipped
onto freight cars. At their destination, the
loading units are loaded onto
road vehicles once again.
Term used to describe the form of rail freight
service whereby an entire wagon is used by
one shipper.
Allgemeiner Vertrag für die Verwendung von
Güterwagen – The AVV is an agreement of the
UIC and governs the usage of freight wagons
within the railway network of the rail operators.
incompatible safety systems currently in
use on European railways, especially on
high-speed lines.
NE
German abbreviation for “non-federally
Road and Rail efficiently combined.
Off the roads and onto the rails
Every logistician knows that there is no such thing as
the perfect mode of transport. That’s why DB Schenker
combines the specific benefits of each one in its multimode
supply chains – for example, the outstanding
ecological balance of trains with the flexibility of trucks.
They handle as much freight as possible by rail. Because
its own trains almost exclusively run on environmentally
friendly electricity, it can reduce emissions by
up to 80 percent compared to conventional transport
by road. Its trucks then pick up and collect the goods.
They can reach the most remote corners of Europe so
that customers can enjoy the convenience of door-todoor
transport, even if they have no rail access of their
own. This reduces overall carbon emissions by up to
60 percent.
DB SCHENKERrailog takes over conventional wagon
load freight, special rail projects and intermodal
container shipments including value added services.
With our online tool Eco TransIT, customers may calculate
the carbon footprint of individual shipments by
comparing the environmental impact of shipments by
rail, road and inland waterways. This enables customers
to decide in favour of the most environment
friendly shipment. Please check: www.ecotransit.org
for further information.
We can all do something for the environment –
for example using state-of-the-art trucks
DB Schenker constantly upgrades its truck fleet and uses
more and more vehicles that meet the Euro 5 standard. It
also tests new fuel mixtures to reduce the trucks’ consumption.
By collecting transports at various hubs in its
own network, DB Schenker increases vehicle utilization,
because fewer deadhead trips mean less emissions. However,
the human factor is still the most important when
it comes to protecting the environment. DB Schenker
makes sure that all drivers and those of its contractors
are trained in how to drive efficiently, using simple
measures to significantly reduce fuel consumption and
carbon dioxide emissions.
Special transports (e.g. agricultural
and construction machines)
CLAAS KGaA mbH, a manufacturer of agricultural machinery, nominated
DB Schenker as logistics service provider for transports to CIS countries in
2012. This nomination comprises a volume of 1,000 agricultural machineries
in wagon groups or block trains from West and East European plants to
various CIS Staates by rail. The specific challenge of these transports is the
route of 5,000 kilometres across several national borders, the coordination
of all involved railways and partners, the associated different freight laws
and the transshipment from European normal gauge to Russian broad gauge.
