Page 10 Every summer West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) sponsors two students on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has been a joint effort of local electric co-ops, such as WFEC, their statewide co-op associations, and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), for over 40 years. Since 1964, the nation’s <strong>coop</strong>erative electric utilities have sponsored more than 40,000 high school juniors and seniors for visits to their U.S. congressional delegations, energy and grassroots government education sessions, and sightseeing in Washington. The National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour is open to all high school juniors whose parents or guardians are members of West Florida Electric. Each high school within WFEC’s service area chooses a representative for the State and National Youth Tours each year. This year’s winners were Brett Tanner of Blountstown and Angel (Annie) Rodriguez of Bonifay who were among the nearly 1,500 high school students from across the country participating in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour held June 12-17, 2010, in Washington, D.C. 8530304 Brett Tanner is a senior this year at Blountstown High School and is the son of Warren & Kim Tanner. He is currently working on getting his pilot’s license. The trip to Washington, D.C. included a very special experience for him – a visit to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is the nation’s monument to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Dedicated on October 15, 1991, the Memorial honors federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have made Annie Rodriguez & Brett Tanner represented WFEC in Washington, D.C. this summer. the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and protection of our nation and its people. The Memorial features two curving, 304-foot-long blue-gray marble walls. Carved on these walls are the names of nearly 19,000 officers who have been killed in the line of duty throughout U.S. history, dating back to the first known death in 1792. Unlike many other memorials in Washington, DC, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is ever-changing: new names of fallen officers are added to the monument each spring, in conjunction with National Police Week. This was a special experience for Tanner because his aunt, Officer Robin Tanner, was killed in the line of duty on December 13, 2007 at the age of 47. An officer at the Monroe County Sheriff’s department, Officer Tanner was responding to an emergency call when her patrol car was struck by another driver who did not yield the right of way, causing her car to crash into a concrete building. While at the memorial, Brett was able to find Robin’s name and take rubbings and photos for his family. His dad, Warren, is also a law enforcement officer in Blountstown. “I really had a great time on the trip and have made many memories that I will remember forever. interesting to actually see in person some of our country’s history that I had only seen in textbooks before going to Washington,” said Tanner. Annie Rodriguez attends Poplar Springs School and is a senior. She is the daughter of Evelyn & Paul Rodriguez of Bonifay. Rodriguez plays basketball and softball for the Atomics. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of West Florida and major in nursing. After working as an RN, Rodriguez plans to go back to school and earn a degree in physical therapy which she has developed an interest in because of a series of knee injuries she’s experienced. In her spare time she enjoys riding horses, swimming and riding four wheelers. Vernon, Ford’s Theater; tours of various monuments including the Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and many more; the National World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and Korean Veterans Memorial. Participants also enjoy a cruise on the Potomac River and many more tours and events.
