English and Kannada press have projected them <strong>in</strong> the correct manner, actively hunt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for more stories of this nature will help to er<strong>as</strong>e the stigma and discrim<strong>in</strong>ation they face.<br />

Position<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Most news items on <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> were published <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>side pages of the papers and<br />

12 appeared <strong>in</strong> supplements. There were 13 items on the front page. These <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

a report on <strong>in</strong>fections <strong>in</strong> the BSF and launch of the Integrated Dise<strong>as</strong>e Surveillance<br />

Project <strong>in</strong> Karnataka. The largest number of stories related to <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> w<strong>as</strong> on awareness-rais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

efforts, particularly by celebrities. The other topic of media <strong>in</strong>terest w<strong>as</strong><br />

spread of the epidemic, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g statistics and data on the number of <strong>in</strong>fections. This<br />

w<strong>as</strong> closely followed by human <strong>in</strong>terest stories on people liv<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>. They<br />

were <strong>in</strong>spirational personal accounts and articles on the rights of <strong>HIV</strong> positive people,<br />

like stamp scam k<strong>in</strong>gp<strong>in</strong> Abdul Karim Telgi.<br />

Frame of reference<br />

While the frame of reference of 57% of the stories w<strong>as</strong> national, 41% dealt with the<br />

state-level situation of <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong>, 38% with the global situation, and 16% and 15%<br />

stories respectively carried community and <strong>in</strong>dividual responses to the epidemic. It follows<br />

from this that just 12% of the stories <strong>in</strong>cluded multiple perspectives of various<br />

parties <strong>in</strong>volved, an <strong>in</strong>dicator of subtle discrim<strong>in</strong>ation aga<strong>in</strong>st those actually affected.<br />

In the Kannada press <strong>in</strong> particular people’s voices were rarely heard. For <strong>in</strong>stance, an<br />

otherwise well-researched feature <strong>in</strong> Udayavani exam<strong>in</strong>ed the social, economic and<br />

legal impact of <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong> but w<strong>as</strong> devoid of comments from people affected by the<br />

virus. The story w<strong>as</strong> generated entirely through data and the author’s own understand-
