Staff Development Programme Developing Professional Capability 11 proposals to the proposal submission itself as well as information about the University support available for developing proposals. N.B. Any of these sessions can also be tailored to smaller groups from any area of the University. If you would like to arrange such a session, please contact the University Funding Team directly on ext. 55407. Development on Demand The following sessions are scheduled subject to demand during the year. Several run monthly within schools and faculties. In addition to these sessions, experts in Enterprise and Development can offer guidance and support on project planning, project management, monitoring and evaluating projects. Throughout the year the Enterprise Academy offers staff and student development sessions focused on business start-up, marketing and promotion, idea development and planning. Consultancy, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) Janet Topping, Enterprise and Development This roadshow session will run throughout the year taking place regularly in each faculty. Sessions will be sector-specific and will look at the key benefits to you, and to the University in engaging with the KTP scheme. The sessions will concentrate on identifying and capitalizing on consultancy opportunities and exploiting and protecting your intellectual property. Sessions will be scheduled and promoted in advance. Enterprise and Entrepreneurship for Students Claire MacLean, Enterprise and Development This session will look at including both enterprise in the curriculum and extra curricular activity which encourages and develops enterprise behaviours, skills and attributes in our students. The session will focus on the services and support available to help staff to develop their enterprise teaching, to support enterprise activity and to evidence employability skills. Participants will hear from colleagues who have developed their own approaches to embedding enterprise in their courses, and will be invited to join the Community of Practice for Enterprise Learning. International Marketing and Recruitment Piera Gerrard, Enterprise and Development This session will focus on how to maximize the success of the University and its programmes in the overseas markets. Although focusing on specific markets the sessions will also provide general information covering overall recruitment plans, the role of Hobson’s and the agent network. Preparing a Business Plan Claire MacLean, Enterprise and Development We all have that eureka moment where we have an idea for a worldbeating innovation. This session is designed to give you a practical overview of developing a business plan to establish how your idea can be developed and exploited. The session will cover the main components of a business plan along with tips on how best to research and evaluate your idea. In addition, participants will be introduced to the University’s business networks and to the Business Mentors programme. Protecting your Ideas Claire MacLean, Enterprise and Development New ideas with commercial potential should be protected before they are discussed outside the University with businesses or potential collaborators. This session discusses the main types of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) that can be employed in these circumstances and gives attendees the opportunity to ask questions about how IPRs can be used in commercializing research output. All new staff are expected to attend an equality and diversity event as part of their induction programme. Bespoke training on a range of diversity issues can be provided for those who have a role in managing or leading others or to address the requirements of staff with specific roles and responsibilities. The aim is to develop awareness of key equality issues and to learn about good practice. By the end of the session, participants should be able to describe the principles of UK equality and diversity legislation, give examples of diversity and understand why it is to be valued, have some tools at their disposal for resolving situations with conflicting needs, and apply their learning to their own working environment. Contact Carol Fairclough (email: c.fairclough@salford.ac.uk) for a username and password to access the training package. 1 Day British Sign Language Course 10 October 2008, (Time TBC) The course is for beginners and so no prior experience is needed. Come on the course to learn basic British Sign Language, learn more about Deaf people, their culture and learn how you can improve your communication skills when dealing with your Deaf students. The course is well organised, lively, fun and engaging. This session is being run in collaboration with MMU and will be held at a venue on their campus. Being disability confident means that you are not only aware of disability issues but that you are also able to take practical steps to ensure that colleagues and students are able to reach their full potential at work and in their studies. This pack will enable you to provide disabled people with equal access to your services and serve disabled customers with self assurance.
