Progression to <strong>University</strong> from Access<br />
to HE Courses<br />
This brief<strong>in</strong>g session expla<strong>in</strong>s how the <strong>University</strong>’s FE/HE Consortium<br />
co-ord<strong>in</strong>ates and assists curriculum development between Consortium<br />
colleges and the <strong>University</strong>’s schools for agreed Access Curriculum<br />
Pathways, how access courses are accredited through open college<br />
networks, the way that the National Open College Credit Framework<br />
operates so that admissions tutors can more readily understand the<br />
value <strong>of</strong> the credits that access students have achieved, and the<br />
quality assurance arrangements which access courses are subject to <strong>in</strong><br />
Consortium colleges and by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Salford</strong> through our<br />
affiliation and validation process. The <strong>University</strong> has established its<br />
own network <strong>of</strong> accredited access courses with partner colleges and<br />
this will be discussed. The recent QAA changes to the way access to<br />
HE courses are to be delivered will be described. For further<br />

For staff who want to know more about effective ways <strong>of</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
personal tutor support, this pack provides both <strong>in</strong>formation and<br />
practical suggestions. It builds on current good practice, considers a<br />
range <strong>of</strong> appropriate and available skills and explores the necessary<br />
boundaries <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the effective fulfill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> this role.<br />

This pack conta<strong>in</strong>s a wealth <strong>of</strong> ready-to-use resources such as activities<br />
and handouts for staff to use to maximize the benefits <strong>of</strong> the<br />
all-important student <strong>in</strong>duction. Alongside this there is a Student<br />
Induction Checklist which has been designed to try to ensure that<br />
new students are familiar with the services and facilities available at<br />
the <strong>University</strong>. The Checklist might also be useful for personal tutors<br />
to use <strong>in</strong> their first meet<strong>in</strong>g with students.<br />
