8 VRIOGS 012.7.13 Revision A t) The dual control point machine mechanisms shall be constructed for either L.H or R.H point layout and the mechanism shall be located away from the track in either case. The hand operating lever shall be located on the side of the mechanism away from the track. i. The hand operating lever shall be marked :- • N (Normal) • R (Reverse) ii. The selector lever shall be marked:- • “Hand operating position” • “Motor operating position” u) The dual control point machine mechanisms shall be provided with suitable keepers with latches for normal and reverse positions of levers equipped with fastenings for application of padlocks. v) The non dual control point machine mechanisms shall be constructed so that the point blades are moved to the full normal or reverse position by the crank handle to enable the clipping of the closed blade. w) The crank handle insertion point shall be clearly marked and covered by a weatherproof cap and hasp for insertion of a nominated padlock. The insertion of the crank handle shall not be possible unless power is removed from the point drive. x) The point machine mechanisms shall operate on tracks with the following geometry :- • Track gauges : 1600mm & 1435mm • Rail weight : 47, 53 & 60kg to AS 1085 Part 1 y) All replaceable component parts of the equipment shall be interchangeable. 5.2 Material Grades Unless otherwise type approved by the ARO, the following material grades and processes shall be used:- Case Hardening Bronze - Depth ≈ 0.5 min, Hardness ≈ 58 – 62 HRc - AS 2738 PT.3 C83600 Manganese Bronze - AS 1567 – 686 Mild Steel - AS 3679 Grade 250 (Section) - AS 3678 Grade 250 (Plate) SGI - AS 1831 - 400.12 Brass - AS 1567 – 385 Aluminium Alloy - AS 1874 - 2000 Aluminium - AS 2338 – 2004 Galvanised Iron - Galvanise to AS 1650 - 1981 Galvanised Sheet - AS 2551 - 1982 Table 2 – Material Grades NOTE: This document is controlled only when viewed on the DOT Engineering Standards website. VRIOGS 012.7.13 Revision A 9 5.3 Maintainability a) The point machines shall be designed and manufactured to facilitate the following:- 5.4 Reliability • Accessibility for normal preventative maintenance. • Specialist tools to be minimised and advised if required. • Piece part replacement a) The manufacturer shall advise the Purchaser on their product’s reliability theory undertaken in design and procedures followed to ensure long term reliability of their product. b) The following information is required as a minimum:- • Proposed maintenance instructions and periodicity. • Reliability data from in-service users by other railroads. 5.5 Mechanical Connections a) A rectangular lock rod shall be used with a vertical locking face of a height not less than 12mm. b) Notches in lock rod shall have square edges and shall be not more than 2mm larger than the plunger, measured in a horizontal line. c) The lock rod shall have sufficient strength to alone and independently hold the points in position throughout the service life of the machine. 5.6 Additional Equipment a) Each mechanism shall be provided with all necessary equipment, for its satisfactory operation as detailed in this specification. 5.7 Painting a) All parts designed exclusively for 50Hz operation shall be painted yellow to colour No.356 in B.S.381C. b) The outside case of the point machine shall be treated with an epoxy based finish or shall be galvanised. The interior shall be finished with a gloss coat of light grey or cream colour. 5.8 Product Identification a) A nameplate shall be affixed in a readily visible position inside the point machine and such a manner that it cannot become dislodged during the operation life of the point machine. b) The nameplate shall contain at least the following:- • Manufacturer’s name • Manufacturer’s unique serial number • The year of manufacture • Motor operating voltage and full rated load current NOTE: This document is controlled only when viewed on the DOT Engineering Standards website.
