5.3 Maintainability<br />
a) The point machines shall be designed and manufactured to facilitate the<br />
following:-<br />

• Accessibility for normal preventative maintenance.<br />
• Specialist tools to be minimised and advised if required.<br />
• Piece part replacement<br />
a) The manufacturer shall advise the Purchaser on their product’s reliability<br />
theory undertaken in design and procedures followed to ensure long term<br />
reliability of their product.<br />
b) The following information is required as a minimum:-<br />
• Proposed maintenance instructions and periodicity.<br />
• Reliability data from in-service users by other railroads.<br />
5.5 Mechanical Connections<br />
a) A rectangular lock rod shall be used with a vertical locking face of a height not<br />
less than 12mm.<br />
b) Notches in lock rod shall have square edges and shall be not more than 2mm<br />
larger than the plunger, measured in a horizontal line.<br />
c) The lock rod shall have sufficient strength to alone and independently hold<br />
the points in position throughout the service life of the machine.<br />
5.6 Additional Equipment<br />
a) Each mechanism shall be provided with all necessary equipment, for its<br />
satisfactory operation as detailed in this specification.<br />
5.7 Painting<br />
a) All parts designed exclusively for 50Hz operation shall be painted yellow to<br />
colour No.356 in B.S.381C.<br />
b) The outside case of the point machine shall be treated with an epoxy based<br />
finish or shall be galvanised. The interior shall be finished with a gloss coat of<br />
light grey or cream colour.<br />
5.8 Product Identification<br />
a) A nameplate shall be affixed in a readily visible position inside the point<br />
machine and such a manner that it cannot become dislodged during the<br />
operation life of the point machine.<br />
b) The nameplate shall contain at least the following:-<br />
• Manufacturer’s name<br />
• Manufacturer’s unique serial number<br />
• The year of manufacture<br />
• Motor operating voltage and full rated load current<br />
