Wilhelm Tell Express
Lucerne - Lugano
The Wilhelm Tell Express links two of Switzerland’s most attractive regions: Central Switzerland and Ticino.
It starts with an unforgettable cruise aboard a vintage paddle steamer from Lucerne to Flüelen. It is
then on to the Italien-speaking part with its Mediterranean climate, palm trees and glittering blue lakes.
It’s hard to believe that a cruise this long is possible on Lake Lucerne. One repeatedly has the feeling
of simply being underway on a small romantic lake, encircled by idyllic places and nearby mountains.
But then the steamer makes a gracious turn around a headland, just where the lake seems
to come to an end. Your steamboat will take you to Flüelen, where the Gotthard Railway awaits you.
pinnacle of enjoyment. Way back in the year 1200 pilgrims made their way up to the mountain summit on foot in order
to pay their respects to the Son of God, who according to ancient legend took rest here afore his heavenly ascent.
Since 1890 funicular rail has lent a hand with the 600 meter climb in altitude to the summit from Paradiso. Overnight
Day 3: Bellinzona
Ticino is defined by the powerful fortifications, comprising three of the best-preserved medieval castles in Switzerland,
which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In earlier times, the medieval castles of Castelgrande, Castello
Montebello and Castello Sasso Corbaro protected the city they now adorn. Only remnants now remain of the fortress
walls that once surrounded Bellinzona. Bellinzona was a very important line of defence for the ancient Romans, and
the first written reference dates back to 590. Take the chance and explore the three castles and the old town. Overnight
