The popularity of the hit television show
CSI – Crime Scene Investigation – has
translated into a rousing interest among
Lancaster City Schools students. For that
reason, a new Career-Technical Program
called Criminal Science has been added to the
curriculum.
The program, which will be taught at the
Stanbery Campus at 345 East Mulberry Street,
joins four other programs for juniors and
seniors – Industrial Technology, Cullinary
Arts, Video Broadcasting and Medical
Technology.TherearealsofourCareerBased
Intervention programs at the school.
The newly added Criminal Science
program is unique in that it will expose junior
and senior students to the criminal justice
system. It will encompass different aspects of
law enforcement such as traffic enforcement,
traffic accident investigation, felony traffic
stops, forensics, police patrol operations,
dispatching, the Ohio Revised Code and other aspects of
the criminal justice system. The students will also have a
physical agility program that must be followed.
The program will cover Ohio laws in the Ohio Revised
Code. This is the manual that police officers in Ohio use
to determine what charges will be issued when an arrest
is made. The students will spend time in traffic court,
municipal court and common pleas court. They also will
examine the different aspects of each individual in the court
processsuchasthedefenseattorneyandprosecutorand
what their different roles are in the criminal justice system.
The program will feature forensics, bike patrol,
trafficpatrol,crowdcontrol,prisonercontainment
and dispatching. The students will learn to fingerprint
individuals, lift prints and read prints in the forensic section
of the building.
Participants will learn from experienced and certified
instructors in each area of the training program.
Completion may result in the students being certified in
a particular area in the same manner police officers are
certified.
The Criminal Science program is using state-of-the-art
electronics for dispatching. There is a room that is being
designed specifically for students to learn to become a
dispatcher in a police or sheriff’s department. The students
will be taught by experienced dispatchers from around the
surrounding area.
Completion of the program could result in the student
receiving college credit for the classes they are taking,
perhaps a quarter or more of classes for which the student
will receive credit.
When the students complete the program they will
have basic knowledge on how the criminal justice system
operates. Students can then seek employment in police,
sheriff, border patrol, military and college.
The program is not for every student. There are specific
regulations that the student must adhere to in order to
complete the program. Only those students that are serious
about a career in law enforcement, forensics science or
public safety should apply to the program. This includes a
desire to pursue some form of post-secondary education.
