The pike, which is a higher-level predator, is a key species for the good health of the Serre-Ponçon lacustrian ecosystem: it controls the development of the other species (particularly the bleak and the roach) which, due to their major development, can have a strong impact on fisheries resources (reduction in biodiversity, reinforcement of the phenomenon of eutrophication, etc.). Within a regulatory context which consists of guaranteeing the Serre-Ponçon MEFM (Greatly Modified Water Body) good ecological potential by 2015, actions favourable to the natural reproduction of pike within the containment works were therefore targeted in partnership with the Département Fishing Federation of the Hautes- Alpes. In addition to its ecological role, it is also a species of high value in terms of fisheries (along with trout, it is the most prized species in the containment area). The stake involved in the experiment therefore consists of identifying the processes and sites with characteristics favourable for the spawning of phytophilic species, subject to the proviso of implementing vegetation planting actions. In winter, the water level variation phenomenon subjects the emerged surface areas to frosts to a depth of several centimetres, thereby destroying the riparian fauna and preventing any establishment of aquatic plant habitats. The experiment’s principle thereby consists of accelerating a vegetation recolonisation process (by establishing plants resistant to the submergence and exposure phases relating to the changing water levels and maintaining sufficient humidity required for plant life to develop), with the essential condition being the presence of a long-term or even permanent waterway in order to ensure a favourable hydraulic cycle. B. TECHNIQUES FOR ARTIFICIAL DEVELOPMENT OF SPAWNING GROUNDS The study then goes on to present proven techniques, used today for maintaining water in shallow basins, as well as for the preservation and protection of banks subject to marine and river erosion due to wake waves which, following tests, would enable the development and creation of spawning grounds under optimal conditions. An example of implementation in a maritime environment: This technique consists of capturing part of the water from a stream, and then creating containment works within a pocket of water limited by a curved bar, which can be manufactured or created in situ. The principle of this bar is to match the relief lines so that it rises up slightly at the ends, whilst consisting of a “high-strength textile sleeve” filled with alluvial materials, shaped like a flattened inner tube spread out on the bed. 49
