Director, MSME, Goa added that the workshops provide<br />
a forum to MSME entrepreneurs, industry associations<br />
and other stakeholders of the MSME sector to share<br />
knowledge ,experience and create mass awareness on<br />
various aspects of IPR.<br />
Mr. Arun Naik, President, Goa Pharmaceutical<br />
Manufacturer's Association, lauded the role of SMEs in<br />
the Indian economy. SMEs use and create a great deal<br />
of IP and therefore should systematically consider the<br />
steps required for protecting, managing and enforcing<br />
it, so as to get the best possible commercial results<br />
from its ownership, he said.<br />

Success Stories from <strong>CII</strong> APTDC – Cheriyal<br />
Paintings and Pembarthi Metal Crafts<br />
The <strong>CII</strong>-Andhra Pradesh Technology<br />
Development Centre (APTDC) in<br />
Collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh<br />
Handicrafts Development Corporation<br />
facilitated the registration of Geographical<br />
Indications of Cheriyal paintings and<br />
Pembarthi Metal Crafts. GMS Law Associates from<br />
Chennai provided legal support for the activity.<br />
Cheriyal paintings with Application No. 190 and Pembarthi<br />
Metal crafts with application No. 194 were granted GI<br />
Registration on 6 October.<br />
A Cheriyal Painting running into several meters<br />
Cheriyal Paintings are painted on khadi or cotton<br />
cloth with a background of red. These paintings were<br />
initially done only on scrolls running into many meters<br />
(10-30) in length.<br />
Now they are done<br />
on small pieces<br />
of khadi or cotton<br />
cloth or even on<br />
cardboard. Through<br />
rich colour schemes,<br />
they express in a<br />
narrative format,<br />
themes of Hindu<br />
epics. The painting<br />
style is used for a<br />
variety of goods<br />
such as masks,<br />
m a r r i a g e g i f t s ,<br />
jewellery boxes,<br />

brass paintings, and<br />
greeting cards, among others.<br />
Another ancient craft is the metal art of Pembarthi,<br />
a picturesque village in Warangal District of Andhra<br />
Pradesh. Pembarthi Metal Craft, one of the finest<br />
and most ancient crafts of India, dating back more<br />
than 5000 years. Pembarthi village in particular, has a<br />
history of superb workmanship of metal workmen called<br />
Vishwakarmas.<br />
