Properties and structure 14 Consider the following three substances: sodium metal (Na), chlorine gas (Cl 2 ) and sodium chloride (NaCl). These three substances have very different properties and very different structures. However, all the properties of the substances can be explained by referencing the atomic structures of sodium and chlorine atoms. Design a table to show the key properties of the three substances. For each property, use your knowledge of atomic structure to explain the reasons why the substance exhibits this property. Hint: Use diagrams where possible and remember to concentrate on the behaviour of the electrons.
