Principal’s Message 院 长 的 话
The popular work of fiction The Da Vinci Code by Dan
Brown, released in 2003, has now been turned into a movie
slated for worldwide release on 19 May 2006. With the
wide publicity and famous film stars, there is a lot of excitement
generated. However, there are a number of claims
that are contradictory to the Christian faith. How should we
prepare ourselves to meet the challenges? We need not be
overwhelmed by this popular thriller, for we can transform
this Da Vinci Code phenomenon to unique opportunities for
proclaiming the authentic Gospel.
Instead of just reacting emotionally to the provocative
historical issues raised, we should provide an
intellectual response. In view of the confusion and
controversy over certain historical developments in
Christian origins, there is need to clarify the true
picture and to re-state our convictions in no uncertain
terms. Our response should include biblical, theological
and historical perspectives.
Instead of fearing the mass media onslaught and the
anticipated negative impact of the movie, we should
seize this “moment of excitement” to share the Good
News of Jesus Christ. This movie can be a springboard
for believers to engage non-believers and seekers in
meaningful, life-changing discussions. If possible,
provide a Q&A session for the interested audience and
engage seekers in ongoing dialogue.
Instead of being troubled by the controversial assertions,
we can rediscover the fascinating insights of the life and
ministry of Messiah Jesus. Some of the viewpoints may
initially be threatening to our faith, but it can be a
catalyst and a springboard for deeper discussion on the
important topics of faith, religion, and Christian history.
For the sake of Christian maturity, we can organize
seminars and Bible studies for further exploration of our
faith. In the midst of all these, let us renew our
commitment in following Jesus’ footsteps.

将 于 今 年 5 月 19 日 在 世 界 各 地 发
行 。 在 广 泛 的 宣 传 及 著 名 电 影 明 星
的 演 出 下 , 引 起 热 烈 的 反 应 。 尽 管 如
此 , 有 些 事 实 与 基 督 教 信 仰 出 现 矛 盾 。 我 们 该 如 何
装 备 自 己 接 受 挑 战 ? 我 们 不 需 被 这 小 说 所 击 倒 , 反
而 更 应 藉 此 机 会 宣 讲 福 音 。
在 为 历 史 性 的 问 题 争 论 时 , 不 如 我 们 去 寻 找 更
有 智 慧 的 回 应 方 法 。 鉴 于 某 些 基 督 教 历 史 发 展
的 混 乱 和 争 论 , 是 有 必 要 去 澄 清 事 实 的 真 相 及
清 楚 的 表 明 我 们 的 信 仰 。 我 们 的 对 策 应 包包 含 圣
经 、 神 学 及 历 史 的 观 念 。 可 以 为 那 些 探 索 者 提
供 解 答 。
在 担 忧 大 众 传 媒 的 冲 击 及 电 影 的 负 面 影 响 时 ,
我 们 应 该 把 握 这 个 时 刻刻 分 享 耶 稣 基 督 的 好 消
息 。 这 部 影 片 可 以 让 信 徒 与 非 信 徒 及 寻 找 信 仰
者 探 讨 生 命 的 意 义 与 变 化化 的 一 个 起 点 。
在 被 受 争 论 所 困 扰 时 , 我 们 可 以 重 新 深 入 探 讨
耶 稣 的 生 活 点 滴 。 有 些 观 点 可 能 在 开 始 时 回 威
胁 我 们 的 信 心 , 但 这 可 能 是 一 个 催 化化 剂剂 和 一 个
起 点 促 进 我 们 更 深 去 讨 论 信 仰 、 宗 教 与 基 督 教
历 史 的 重 要 课 题 。 为 了 使 基 督 徒 更 成 熟 , 我 们
可 以 举 办 讲 座 会 及 查 经 班 来 更 进 一 步 的 探 索
我 们 的 信 仰 。 处 于 这 一 切 , 让 我 们 重 新 委 身 来
跟 随 基 督 的 脚 踪 。

9th January 2006. The day I had been awaiting for months had
finally arrived. It was the glorious day of enrolment for all 1 st year
STM students. After going through the simple registration
procedures and the vigorous cleaning process of my new room, I
proceeded downstairs to meet with other 1 st year students and the
members of the Student Committee. A young man named Kevin
introduced himself as the President of the Student Committee and
gave us a short briefing before he brought us to the destination of
the day, the food court at Taman Blossom, where we enjoyed a
well-deserved dinner after the hard work we had put into cleaning
our rooms. After dinner, the thoughtful Committee members
brought us to Giant Hypermarket to buy necessities that we might
have forgotten to bring from home. The eventful day ended with us
spending the night adapting to our respective rooms, pondering
what might be awaiting us in the coming days.
The rest of the week was filled with activities of different kinds.
We had sessions of ice breakers so that we could get to know the
rest of the 1 st year students and the Committee members. Briefings
were also given to us in order for us to understand the guidelines
and rules of STM. We were even given a free tour around the
campus to help us get familiarized with the surroundings. The best
activity of the week was the bowling session at Golden Bowl
Seremban. It was a wonderful time of fun, interaction and
fellowship between the students and the lecturers.
Although the orientation week was packed with various activities, it
was definitely an enriching and edifying experience for all, which
could only be made possible through the diligent efforts of the
Student Committee and the thoughtfulness of the STM Faculty.

一 月 九 日 , 一 个 我 等 待 已 久 的 日 子 终 于 临
到到 了 。 这 一 天 是 所 有 第 一 年 学 生 加 入 STM
的 日 子 。 当 我 完 成 了 简 单 的 登 记 手 续 及 疲
累 的 房 间 清 理 工 作 后 , 就 到到 楼 下 和 其 他 第
一 年 学 生 和 学 生 会 委 员 们 会 面 。 这 时 , 有
一 位 弟 兄 名 叫 启 荣 就 自 我 介 绍 为 学 生 会 主
席 。 当 他 讲 解 一 些 事 项 后 , 便 带 我 们 去
Taman Blossom 的 小 贩 中 心 享 用 晚 餐 。 晚
餐 后 , 委 员 们 非 常 体 贴 的 带 我 们 去 巨 人 霸
级 市 场 , 让 我 们 购 买 一 些 必 需 品 。 然 后 ,
我 们 就 回 到到 宿 舍 渡 过 在 STM 的 第 一 个 夜
晚 。
迎 新 周 接 下 来 的 整 个 星 期 充 满 了 各 式 各 样
的 活 动 。 我 们 通 过 破 冰 游 戏 更 进 一 步 认 识
彼 此 。 我 们 也 听 到到 不 少 解 说 使 到到 我 们 能 够
更 了 解 STM 的 条 规 。 委 员 们 也 免 费 带 我 们
游 览 整 个 学 院 的 周 围 以 让 我 们 对 此 环 境 更
加 熟 悉 。 整 个 星 期 最 精 彩 的 活 动 当 然 非 保
龄 球 赛 莫 属 。 通 过 保 龄 球 比 赛 , 我 们 有 机
会 与 讲 师 们 有 更 密 切 的 团 契 。
虽 然 , 迎 新 周 的 活 动 很 频 密 , 但 对 每 个 参
与 者 来 说 , 这 的 确 是 个 丰 富 与 难 忘 的 经
历 。 迎 新 周 能 够 顺 利 进 行 也 得 归 功 于 学 生
会 和 校 方 的 周 到到 的 策 划 。

STM was blessed to have Dr. Thomas Harvey from Trinity Theological College, Singapore to share on the theme
of "Maturity and Ministry". Before speaking on the practical aspects of ministry and the church and minister, he laid
the theological foundation by looking at "Immaturity and the Fall" in Genesis 3 and salvation as a lifelong
vocation of obedience and submission to God and His word based on Hebrews 5:7-6:3. He has certainly challenged
us to reflect more deeply on a very important issue, especially in the context of the seminary where people are being
trained to be ministers.

22 nd February 2006 was our Talent and Freshies’s
Night. That night was to welcome the arrival of the
new students and also the moment for the students to
present their talents.
The theme for this year is “Follow Christ”. Each group
presented creative and funny sketches and mime to
express the way to follow Christ. Each participant
enjoyed the presentation by the students.
一 年 一 度 的 迎 新 之 夜 在 2 月 22 日 举 行 。 当 晚 不 只 是 欢 迎
新 生 的 到到 来 , 也 是 不 同 年 级 的 学 员 发 挥 才 艺 的 时 刻刻 。
今 年 的 主 题 是 “ 效 法 基 督 ”。 各 组 分 别 以 富 创 艺 及 搞
笑 的 话 剧剧 和 手 语 来 表 达 跟 随 基 督 的 样 式 。 这 晚 会 让 每
位 参 与 者 都 尽 兴 而 归 。

Ten STM lecturers and all the first year students went to Ipoh
on 11 th and 12 th February, 2006 at the invitation of the Ipoh
Theological Center (ITC) and churches in Ipoh. This was for
the purpose of attending the ITC annual thanksgiving
service and to conduct STM Sundays in the local churches.
Planning and preparations were initiated by the students. The
bond between them was strengthened during rehearsals for the
trip. For the students, it was their first trip together and there
was excitement when they arrived about 2.00pm on Saturday.
Throughout the journey,
there was fun, laughter and
sharing. Prior to the night
meeting, we tasted Ipoh’s
f a mo u s c u isine “ Ip o h
Chicken and Bean Sprouts”.
For some, it was the first
time tasting this special and
delicious food.
The students were divided
into two groups (English department and Chinese department)
and they conducted separate STM night meetings. The
students gave their very best for the program; one of them was
so sincere in her acting that her tears flowed during the sketch.
The audiences were encouraged and strengthened; some even
committed their lives desiring to serve God in the near future.
On Sunday morning, students followed the lecturers to
different churches for the Sunday service. Lecturers shared the
sermon and students gave their testimonies. In the afternoon,
everyone attended the ITC annual thanksgiving service and
left Ipoh at night. As we journeyed back, each of the students
shared about their experience of the trip. We thank God for the
many sweet memories and positive lessons.
2006 年 2 月 11-12 日 , 学 院 应 怡 保 神 学 中 心 及 怡 保
教 会 的 邀 请 下 由 10 位 讲 师 及 全 体 第 一 年 生 一 同
出 发 到到 怡 保 。 我 们 在 下 午 2 点 到到 达 , 有 许 多 学 生
是 第 一 次 到到 怡 保 。 在 晚 上 聚 会 之 前前 , 我 们 享 用
怡 保 出 名 的 “ 芽 菜 鸡 ”。
然 后 , 学 生 们 分 成 两 组 ( 英 文 部 及 中 文 部 ) 个
别 在 不 同 的 教 会 负 责 神 学 之 夜 。 学 生 们 都 很 投
入 在 所 负 责 活 动 。 有 一 位 学 生 在 演 戏 时 , 真 情
流 入 并 且 流 下 了 眼 泪 。 在 座 的 会 众 也 被 受 激
励励 , 有 些 愿 意 将 一 身 奉 献 为 主 使 用 。
在 星 期 日 早 上 , 学 生 们 将 跟 随 不 同 的 讲 师 到到 不
同 的 教 会 崇 拜 。 讲 师 们 分 享 神 学 事 工 及 学 生 们
分 享 见 证 。 在 下 午 的 时 候 , 全 体 讲 师 及 学 员 们
一 起 出 席 怡 保 神 学 中 心 一 年 一 度 的 感 恩 崇 拜 。
我 们 在 晚 上 时 离 开 怡 保 。 在 回 程 中 , 学 生 们 个
别 分 享 他 们 的 经 历 。 感 谢 主 让 学 生 们 有 一 个 美
好 的 回 忆 及 学 习 。

Rev Joseph Deva Komar graduated with a
B.D. from Union Biblical Seminary,
Yavatmal, India in 1982. Since then he
has been a pastor with the Tamil
Methodist Church. He furthered his
theological education in Missiology at the
Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary, Seoul,
Korea and was awarded the Masters in Theology in
1998. He began to teach part-time at STM since 1999.
He is presently pursuing the PhD in Urban Ministry at
SAIACS in Bangalore, India. He joined STM as fulltime
faculty in January 2006.
Joseph Deva Komar 讲 师 于 1982 年 毕 业 于 印 度 的 联 合
圣 经 学 院 之 道 学 学 士 学 位 。 过 后 , 在 淡 米 尔 卫 理 公
会 任 职 传 道 。 他 继 续 在 汉 城 , 韩 国 的 长 老 会 学 院 和
神 学 院 进 修 宣 教 学 及 在 1998 年 毕 业 于 神 学 硕 士 学

On 28 February 2006, Professor I Howard Marshall delivered a series of 3 lectures
on the “Aspects of the Atonement”. Around 200 people attended the lecture.

笔 者 感 到到 高 兴 能 参 加加 这 次 在 巴 西 的 Sao Leopoldo 举 行 的 “ 教 会 合 一 青 年 大 会 ”。 大 会 主 题 为 :“ 在 拉
丁 美 洲 的 宣 教 和 普 世 合 一 ”。114 位 来 自 世 界 各 地 的 青 年 神 学 生 (35 岁 以 下 ) 参 加加 这 为 期 十 四 天 (12
-25/2/06) 的 大 会 。 超 过 一 半 ( 大 约 70 位 ) 的 参 加加 者 是 巴 西 本 地 人 , 其 他 的 来 自 巴 西 以 外 的 南 美 洲 、
北北 美 洲 、 欧 洲 、 非 洲 和 亚 洲 。
除 了 星 期 三 的 出 外 观 光 的 时 间 和 星 期 日 的 崇 拜 , 几 乎 每 天 都 是 从 早 上 八 时 开 始 早 会 , 然 后 是 讲 座 , 下
午 有 小 组 讨 论 、 讲 座 或 学 生 专 文 报 告 , 晚 上 继 续 还 有 讲 座 , 最 后 以 晚 祷 会 于 晚 上 十 时 结 束 。 大 会 的 讲
座 都 是 围 绕 在 “ 教 会 合 一 ” 这 个 主 题 , 例 如 教 会 合 一 的 圣 经 基 础 、 教 会 合 一 与 宣 教 , 教 会 合 一 与 神 学
教 育 、 与 公 义 、 与 五 旬 宗 教 会 、 与 性 别 , 宣 教 和 宗 教 对 话 等 。 另 外 , 所 有 参 加加 者 也 有 机 会 参 加加 在 巴 西
Porto Alegre 举 行 的 第 九 届 的 普 世 教 会 协 会 大 会 的 一 些 的 聚 会 。
在 每 个 下 午 一 个 半 小 时 的 小 组 讨 论 , 可 看 出 有 些 组 员 如 果 不 是 对 “ 教 会 合 一 ” 没 有 深 入 的 认 识 , 就 是
对 它 有 不 同 的 了 解 。 在 我 参 与 的 小 组 - 由 以 英 语 为 沟 通 语 言 的 学 生 组 成 , 都 赞 同 教 会 宗 派 之 间 的 合 一 ,
但 对 于 这 合 一 运 动 是 否 应 延 伸 到到 其 他 的 宗 教 , 大 家 没 有 一 致 的 看 法 。
总 括 来 说 , 这 次 的 大 会 除 了 增 广 视 野 , 也 冲 击 了 笔 者 的 思 想 。 最 后 , 笔 者 希 望 神 学 院 多 鼓 励励 神 学 生 参
加加 一 些 国 际 性 的 研 讨 会 , 扩 张 神 学 生 的 思 想 框 框 。( 文 : 朱 传 文 )
I am delighted to have this opportunity to attend the “Ecumenical Congress" in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil. The theme of
the congress was “Mission and Ecumenism in Latin America”. There were 114 theological students (aged below 35)
who came from all over the world, to in join this 14 days (12-25 Feb) congress. More than half of the participants
came from Brazil and others from Latin America, North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Besides Sunday and the tour on Wednesday, the program started with chapel at 8 am, followed by seminars. In the
afternoons, there was group discussion, seminar or paper presentations. At night there were seminars or roundtables,
and the program ended with a prayer meeting at 10 pm. All the topics of the seminars were related to the theme on
“Ecumenism”, such as Biblical Foundation of Ecumenism, Ecumenism and Mission, Ecumenism and Theological
Education, Ecumenism and Justice, Ecumenism and Pentecostalism, Ecumenism and Gender, Mission and Interreligious
Dialogue etc. Besides this, all the participants also had the opportunity to attend some meetings of the 9 th
Assembly of the WCC which was held in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
During the discussion in the afternoons, I found that there were some group members who did not have an indepth
understanding of what ecumenism is, while others have a different understanding about this topic. In the discussion
group that I joined, of which mostly are English-speaking, all agreed as to unity of the churches as well as among the
denominations. But whether this unity should include other religions, we held different views.
In short, besides broadening my horizon, the congress also has impacted my thinking. Lastly, I believe our seminary
should encourage more students to attend international congresses in order to broaden their mindset and thinking.

The Asian Pacific Consultation on
Discipleship (APCOD) 2006
It is an honour for me to attend the APCOD 2006 consultation
in New Zealand from 15th-18th March 2006. I want to
thank God because he did use many speakers to teach me
and bring to me many precious lessons to strengthen my
ministry.
I met many people from 25 countries. I learnt many lessons
on discipleship, and I have been deeply encouraged to be a
disciple maker.
Looking at the great harvest field in Vietnam, I pray that
God may use me as an instrument in His hand as a disciple
maker, so that I may disciple other people effectively.
