20) New towers shall use breakpoint technology in the design of the facility.
Breakpoint technology is the engineering design of a monopole wherein a
specified point on the monopole is designed to have stresses concentrated so
that the point is at least five (5) percent more susceptible to failure than any other
point along the monopole so that in the event of a structural failure of the
monopole, the failure will occur at the breakpoint rather than at the base plate,
anchor bolts, or any other point on the monopole. The breakpoint levels shall be
designed so that the tower will break into segments that are each no longer than
the shortest distance the tower is set back from the property line. Certification by
a registered professional engineer licensed by the State of North Carolina of the
breakpoint design and the design’s fall radius must be provided together with the
other information required herein from an applicant. (See attached Exhibit 10
