Out and About<br />

<strong>Evergreen</strong> High School’s Advanced Placement<br />

Government students worked with TVW television on<br />

the Capitol Classroom Project during the legislative<br />

session. Students selected a bill and worked with a<br />

professional lobbyist to get the bill passed into law.<br />

Senate Bill 5389 passed the House (95-2) and was<br />

recently signed by Governor Jay Inslee. The bill, which<br />

will now become law, makes it a requirement to have<br />

sibling visitation for kids in foster care at least twice per<br />

month.<br />

Awards<br />

Congratulations to Mountain View High School senior<br />

Karishma Patel who has been named one of three<br />

<strong>2013</strong>Young Women of Achievement by the YWCA<br />

Clark County. Honorees are recognized for their efforts<br />

to help build a stronger, healthier and more vibrant<br />

community through service and leadership.<br />

The following students have been named National<br />

Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners: Union High School<br />

– Yun Cheng and Trevor Schauer; <strong>Evergreen</strong> High<br />

School – Lydia Downer and Mountain View High<br />

School’s – Rohith Nagari.<br />

Mountain View High School<br />

student Waverly He was awarded<br />

the President’s Volunteer Service<br />

Award and a Prudential Certificate<br />

of Excellence for her service to the<br />

Southwest Washington Red Cross and<br />

other community services in Clark<br />

County.<br />

Heritage High School students participated in the FBLA<br />

State Business Leadership Conference last month<br />

with the following results: HHS brought home several<br />

chapter awards including the Gold Seal Chapter Award<br />

of Merit (reserved for the top 10 percent of chapters in<br />

Washington), third place in Outstanding Local Chapter<br />

and first place in Local Recruitment of Chapters.<br />

The American Institute of Architects-Vancouver and<br />

Clark <strong>Public</strong> Utilities awarded Mountain View High<br />

School senior Jorge Marquez “Best Presentation”<br />

at the Home and Garden Show recently for his entry<br />

in the annual High School Design and Drafting<br />

competition. This year’s challenge was to design a<br />

lighthouse.<br />

<strong>Evergreen</strong> High <strong>Schools</strong>’ recent production of Legally<br />

Blonde was entered into a statewide competition for<br />

musical theatre. Professionals from the prestigious 5th<br />

Avenue Theatre in Seattle WA, evaluated more than<br />

100 productions state-wide. For formal awards the top<br />

10 percent are recognized. Legally Blonde received<br />

recognition for: Outstanding Performance by an<br />

Actress in a Featured Ensemble Role - Hannah <strong>May</strong>es;<br />

Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Featured<br />

Ensemble Role - Honorable Mention - Jala Harper;<br />

Outstanding Orchestra; Outstanding Achievement by<br />

a student in Technical Theatre - Nick Sabodash and<br />

Outstanding Achievement by a student in Technical<br />

Theatre - Cody Lint.<br />

The following students from Mountain View High<br />

School received recognition from the Scholastic Art<br />

& Writing Awards – Alliance for Young Artists and<br />

Writers: Silver Key Award – Kyuri Kim for mixed<br />

media art and Reem Sabha for writing; Honorable<br />

Mentions – Gloria Choi, drawing and Sierra Sackett<br />

for print making.<br />

Union High School mathletes placed 10th in the<br />

National Assessment & Testing Math Contest. The<br />

<strong>2013</strong> Collaborative Problem-Solving Contest (CPSC)<br />

presents schools with fifteen unique, intricate problems<br />

to be solved over the course of a week. Under the<br />

guidance of teacher/coach Shayma Shaheen, students<br />

worked together using brainstorming, collaboration,<br />

research, and technology to solve the problems.<br />

Congratulations to Mountain View High School DECA<br />

International winners Liz Reynolds and Natalie Lucey.<br />

Both students earned the organizations highest honors<br />

rating in the Top 10 in the nation. Union High School<br />

– Ashley Kuhn and Adam Kinkley placed first in<br />

their respective categories. Heritage High School team<br />

members Sammy Ballard, Mark Kravets and Enrique<br />

Juarez placed fourth overall, and Bron Wickum and<br />

Jacqui Wambir placed in the Top 17. Emily McCoy was<br />

named State Winner for her essay on the Stock Market.<br />

The following <strong>Evergreen</strong> High School vocalists received<br />

the top three spots in the State Solo/Ensemble Music<br />

Competition at Central Washington University last month:<br />

Mixed Quartet, third place - Victoria Hardy, Kaitlin<br />

Lockhart, DJ Morales and Spencer Kelly; Alto Solo,<br />

second place - Myracle Talimao.<br />

Twelve Riverview Elementary School Safety Patrol<br />

Captains were honored for their leadership and service to<br />

the community at the Clark County Youth Achievement<br />

Awards held at Skyview High School earlier this month.<br />

Students receiving recognition were: Jane Beacock,<br />

Kody Brown, Jack Campbell, Kai Christensen, Lily<br />

Gable, Kaden Gardner, Jayda Gilmore, Sophia Harris,<br />

Nathan Lien, Wiley Middlemas, Cassandra Mikah and<br />

Sara Raff.<br />

Congratulations to Shahala Middle School eighth grade<br />

Wind Symphony for their award winning performance at<br />

the OSU Middle School Band Festival in Corvallis, OR.<br />

The band placed second among 26 competing bands.<br />

School News<br />

The Office of the Superintendent of <strong>Public</strong> Instruction<br />

(OSPI) and State Board of Education (SBE) informed<br />

11 schools in <strong>Evergreen</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> (EPS) that they<br />

have been given Washington Achievement Awards in<br />

the following categories: Overall Excellence- Fisher’s<br />

Landing Elementary School, Riverview Elementary School<br />

and Shahala Middle School; Language Arts - Heritage<br />

High School; Math - Fisher’s Landing Elementary<br />

School; Science - Fisher’s Landing Elementary School,<br />

Hearthwood Elementary School, Mill Plain Elementary<br />

Shahala Middle School eighth grade student Merrideth<br />

McDowell wrote a winning entry in a Kleenex<br />

Experiment contest. One hundred schools were selected<br />

to enter the contest, based on science test scores,<br />

and McDowell’s entry was one of five selected from<br />

across the country to appear in an upcoming commercial<br />

launch. A production team from Georgia filmed onlocation<br />

at the school. Shahala was also awarded with a<br />

check for $5000 in box top funds.<br />

Service to others<br />

York Elementary School<br />

partnered with students from<br />

Mountain View High School<br />

(MVHS ) for a ‘Stuff the<br />

Principal’s (York principal<br />

Dawn Harris) Office’ food<br />

fundraiser. The food drive<br />

garnered three truckloads of much needed food items for<br />

Mandy’s Pantry located at MVHS.<br />

Wy’east Middle School recently opened the ‘Warrior<br />

Food Pantry’ providing snacks for hungry students. Elli<br />

Wiita, a sophomore in high school at Caitlin Gables in<br />

Portland, lives in the Wy’east neighborhood and wanted<br />

to help her community. With the help of a grant from<br />

the Bud Anderson Family Foundation, Share House and<br />

Clark County Food Bank, Wiita created the food pantry.<br />

Teachers and councilors refer students to the pantry<br />

for snacks like granola bars, apple sauce, and goldfish<br />

crackers.

Staff<br />

Third grade EXCEL teacher Lisa Morgan from Image<br />

Elementary School received the Council of Educational<br />

Facility Planners International (CEFPI) Innovative<br />

Educator-Environmental Based Learning Award. The<br />

award honors teachers for impacting students by utilizing<br />

educational environments in new and innovative ways.<br />

Morgan will receive a $1,500 financial reward and<br />

present at the CEFPI conference June 6, in Spokane, WA.<br />

Shahala Middle School teacher/librarian Paul Warner<br />

was featured on author Janet Lee Carey website “Library<br />

Lions” recently. The site focuses on some of the best<br />

school libraries and librarians in the country and shares<br />

what they are doing to help students. Warner’s interview<br />

is showcased in her blog post entitled “The Great<br />
