Good news report Oregon Game Project Challenge in Portland. The theme was to create a game for social good. ‘Trash Monsters’ game was about picking up trash at school. School and Riverview Elementary School; Extended Graduation Rate - Union High School; Closing Achievement Gaps - Columbia Valley Elementary School, Riverview Elementary School, Cascade Middle School, Covington Middle School, Pacific Middle School and Shahala Middle School. ‘Trash Monsters’ (l-r)Ian Hanley, Chace Jones, Ryan Perkins (holding sign) Ally Errico, Lukas Suzuki and Max Myers. Congratulations to Mountain View High School DECA International winners Liz Reynolds and Natalie Lucey. Both students earned the organizations highest honors rating in the Top 10 in the nation. Union High School – Ashley Kuhn and Adam Kinkley placed first in their respective categories. Heritage High School team members Sammy Ballard, Mark Kravets and Enrique Juarez placed fourth overall, and Bron Wickum and Jacqui Wambir placed in the Top 17. Emily McCoy was named State Winner for her essay on the Stock Market. The following Evergreen High School vocalists received the top three spots in the State Solo/Ensemble Music Competition at Central Washington University last month: Mixed Quartet, third place - Victoria Hardy, Kaitlin Lockhart, DJ Morales and Spencer Kelly; Alto Solo, second place - Myracle Talimao. Twelve Riverview Elementary School Safety Patrol Captains were honored for their leadership and service to the community at the Clark County Youth Achievement Awards held at Skyview High School earlier this month. Students receiving recognition were: Jane Beacock, Kody Brown, Jack Campbell, Kai Christensen, Lily Gable, Kaden Gardner, Jayda Gilmore, Sophia Harris, Nathan Lien, Wiley Middlemas, Cassandra Mikah and Sara Raff. Congratulations to Shahala Middle School eighth grade Wind Symphony for their award winning performance at the OSU Middle School Band Festival in Corvallis, OR. The band placed second among 26 competing bands. School News The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and State Board of Education (SBE) informed 11 schools in Evergreen Public Schools (EPS) that they have been given Washington Achievement Awards in the following categories: Overall Excellence- Fisher’s Landing Elementary School, Riverview Elementary School and Shahala Middle School; Language Arts - Heritage High School; Math - Fisher’s Landing Elementary School; Science - Fisher’s Landing Elementary School, Hearthwood Elementary School, Mill Plain Elementary Pacific Middle School staff pose for a photo celebrating the school being recognized by OSPI with a 2012 Washington Achievement Award. Shahala Middle School eighth grade student Merrideth McDowell wrote a winning entry in a Kleenex Experiment contest. One hundred schools were selected to enter the contest, based on science test scores, and McDowell’s entry was one of five selected from across the country to appear in an upcoming commercial launch. A production team from Georgia filmed onlocation at the school. Shahala was also awarded with a check for $5000 in box top funds. Service to others Students, staff, parents and community members of York Elementary School partnered with students from Mountain View High School (MVHS ) for a ‘Stuff the Principal’s (York principal Dawn Harris) Office’ food fundraiser. The food drive garnered three truckloads of much needed food items for Mandy’s Pantry located at MVHS. Wy’east Middle School recently opened the ‘Warrior Food Pantry’ providing snacks for hungry students. Elli Wiita, a sophomore in high school at Caitlin Gables in Portland, lives in the Wy’east neighborhood and wanted to help her community. With the help of a grant from the Bud Anderson Family Foundation, Share House and Clark County Food Bank, Wiita created the food pantry. Teachers and councilors refer students to the pantry for snacks like granola bars, apple sauce, and goldfish crackers.
Good news report Scholarships Congratulations to Union High School senior Anthony Garcia who has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Portland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Staff Third grade EXCEL teacher Lisa Morgan from Image Elementary School received the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) Innovative Educator-Environmental Based Learning Award. The award honors teachers for impacting students by utilizing educational environments in new and innovative ways. Morgan will receive a $1,500 financial reward and present at the CEFPI conference June 6, in Spokane, WA. Shahala Middle School teacher/librarian Paul Warner was featured on author Janet Lee Carey website “Library Lions” recently. The site focuses on some of the best school libraries and librarians in the country and shares what they are doing to help students. Warner’s interview is showcased in her blog post entitled “The Great Guybrarian” the link is http://LibraryLionsRoar.blogspot. com The Washington School Public Relations Association (WSPRA) has announced the 2012-2013 Publication and Electronic Media Award winners honoring Evergreen Public Schools Community Relations and Video Services with the following: Award of Excellence - Marketing Material - “We Believe” video, Honorable Mention - Video/Audio - “We Believe” video, Award of Merit - Video/Audio - YES TV - Segment 107 on the Crestline Elementary School Fire and the Award of Merit - External Print Newsletter - Your Evergreen Schools. Congratulations to Carol Fenstermacher, APR Director of Community Relations, Kris Fay, Public Information Coordinator, Kathryn Garcia-Stackpole, Public Information Specialist and Angela Cochran, Video Services Coordinator. Burton Elementary School teacher Stephanie Gano has been recognized as the K103 Educator of the Week. Each week during the school year, radio station K103 and Concordia University honors a local educator.
