MC3585 Mediating Childhood (capped at 50) Spring TUTOR: Dr Cynthia Carter 20 Credits Aims of the Module This module considers the historically complex relationship between media and childhood in western societies. It will examine a number of longstanding debates on media and children with the aim of understanding contemporary views and responses to children‘s media use, representation and production. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this module, students should be able both to recognise and critique socially constructed theories about childhood, and have a detailed understanding of some of the main issues and debates related to children and media. Methods of Teaching: Weekly lectures and fortnightly debate seminars. Method of assessment: Weekly lectures and fortnightly debate seminars. Syllabus Content: Topics many include: theories of childhood; children and media violence; the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood; media literacy; citizenship and news; children‘s rights vs. censorship; gender and ‗race‘ in children‘s media; youth led media; children, globalisation & new media.
