STRENGTHENING
GLOBAL
STRATEGIES
worldtradeweek.com

I | Chair’s Message
world Trade:
Strengthening Global
Strategies
Facebook, Amazon, Apple … three different
companies, yet all operate in the same global
environment. Without a focus on the global
economy, none of these companies would be
where they are today.
The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce’s World Trade Week
(WTW) highlights the importance of participating in global trade.
Because as global trade goes, so too goes the world, your city,
your business and your neighborhood.
Less than five percent of the world’s population lives in the United
States. From a sales and marketing perspective, would you only
shop in five percent of the stores? Would you like to showcase
your products in only a five percent market share? Would you be
comfortable with 95 percent of all markets unavailable to your
products and services? The obvious answer is “no.” Yet, only one
percent of U.S. businesses export to other countries as a source
of revenue.
When WTW became a concept in 1926 and received President
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s support in 1933, the U.S. enjoyed its
greatest expansion of growth in history. Beginning in World War II
and extending into the present, participating in global trade has
benefitted every industry.
Today, American-made goods and services are still the most
highly sought-after products in the world. Expanding the U.S.’
footprint means expanding global trade. WTW is here to educate,
promote and encourage U.S. businesses to gain the knowledge
necessary to strengthen their global strategies and begin taking
advantage of the other 95 percent.
I encourage you to participate in WTW. The more you know the
more you grow, whether as a business or as an individual. Your
involvement makes the difference.
I am honored to be this year’s WTW Chair. And, I want to
commend the L.A. Area Chamber for its continued support of
WTW and its clear understanding of how important L.A. is to
global trade and investment.
Department of Commerce’s Message
Message from the Acting
Secretary of Commerce,
U.S. Department of
Commerce
The world has drastically changed since
the first presidential declaration of world
trade in 1935. Since then, the United
States has been a leader in the pursuit of
open markets and reduced barriers to trade, creating opportunities
and greater prosperity for America’s families, farmers, workers,
consumers and businesses.
We are making historic progress toward achieving President Barack
Obama’s National Export Initiative goal of doubling exports by the end
of 2014. The U.S. has now partnered with 20 countries through 14 free
trade agreements. These agreements have played a critical role in
leveling the playing field and creating a more transparent commercial
environment for U. S. companies doing business abroad. In 2012,
U. S. exports to these 20 countries grew at nearly twice the rate of
our exports to the rest of the world, and represented nearly half of the
total $2.2 trillion in U. S. exports that year. U. S. exports to Panama
and Colombia achieved record highs in 2012, the same year that trade
agreements with these two countries entered into force.
But we are not resting our laurels.
We continue to engage our trading partners in new ways to improve
the international business climate and the opportunities available for
U. S. business.
In his State of the Union address, the President announced the
Administration’s plans to notify Congress of its intent to launch
negotiations on a transatlantic trade and investment partnership with
the European Union. A successfully negotiated partnership such as
this one would boost economic growth in the U.S. and Europe, and
add to the more than 13 million American and European jobs already
supported by transatlantic trade and investment.
I was also pleased to recently launch the “Doing Business in Africa”
campaign, part of the larger U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa,
issued by President Obama in June 2012. This campaign will promote
enormous opportunities for the U.S. private sector. According to the
World Bank, the gross domestic product of the Sub-Saharan countries
totaled approximately $1.26 trillion in 2011; an analysis from the same
year by The Economist reports that for 10 years leading up to 2010,
six of the world’s 10 fastest growing economies were in Sub-Saharan
Africa.
It is through trade that our economy remains strong and dynamic
and our companies realize their competitive advantage. Many U.S.
companies are well-positioned to find success in foreign markets and
can benefit from government assistance. The U.S. Department of
Commerce’s International Trade Administration offers a wide range of
resources to support U.S. exporters, including its Export Assistance
Centers throughout the country.

Department of Commerce’s Message | III
As we celebrate the importance of trade during World Trade
Week this year, I would like to recognize the members of the
U.S. business community, who are the very foundation of our
economy, as well as the many local organizations, such as the
Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, that play a critical role
in advocating for U. S. business and amplifying the voice of
business in their own communities and far beyond.
As we celebrate World Trade Week, we must recognize that
government can only set the stage for increased trade; American
companies must seize the opportunities to bring the best and
most competitive products to the world marketplace.
REBECCA M. BLANK
Deputy Secretary of Commerce
Mayor of Los Angeles’ Message
| V
Message from
City of Los Angeles
Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa
May 2, 2013
Dear Friends:
On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, it is
my pleasure to welcome the 87 th Annual World Trade Week, the
most innovative and influential celebration of international trade
in the country!
Los Angeles serves as a shining example of the United States’
strong commitment to international trade. With significant
technical, security, and capital improvements to our Tom
Bradley International Terminal, LAX remains one of the world’s
largest, most traveled airports. Further, the exciting and recent
completion of the Main Channel Deepening Project at the Port
of L.A. allows us to continue our tenure as the number one port
center and customs district in the nation. The City of Los Angeles
is invested in and embraces international trade.
From entertainment to technology to tourism and beyond, every
pillar of industry in Los Angeles is connected to international
markets. Our City serves as a gateway for textiles from China,
automotive and electrical equipment from Japan, and produce
from South America, to name but a few examples. We proudly
partner with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce to
form the Los Angeles Regional Export Council as a powerful
means to improve the region’s export services network and
efficiently bring Los Angeles’ superior products and services
to the world. These efforts contribute to our lasting legacy as a
business-oriented, global city.
Los Angeles is where the world creates and innovates! As the
United States headquarters for many global corporations,
international trade is a deep and rich part of our economic
viability. I commend the Chamber, the World Trade Week
committee and Chair Noel Massie for raising the awareness of
international trade within Los Angeles.
I offer my best wishes for a memorable celebration and future
successful World Trade Weeks.
Very truly yours,
History | 3
World Trade Week History
Celebrating a month
of world trade in May
The World Trade Week concept
was conceived in 1926 and first
observed in 1927 in Southern
California. World trade continues
to significantly contribute to
the nation’s economy and has
developed a vast new horizon for
America’s businesses.
In 1926, Stanley T. Olafson,
then manager of the World
Trade Department of the Los
Angeles Chamber of Commerce,
conceived the idea of a World
Trade Week observance in Southern California. This was
during a period of isolationism and under the conditions
prevailing during the heyday of the restrictive Smoot-
Hawley Tariff Act.
In 1935, President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
officially proclaimed
World Trade Week as
a national observance
by the United States
Government and
selected the third week
in May each year, which
includes May 22, National
Maritime Day.
Initially, the purpose of World Trade Week was to promote the
ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Following World War
II, the expanding economy and potential for international
commerce growth created an opportunity for World Trade
Week to expand its scope to include all facilities and
organizations in the Southern California area involved in
world trade.
Under the guidance of its founding sponsors — the L.A. Area
Chamber, Los Angeles World Airports, the ports of Long
Beach and Los Angeles — the original week-long observance
has now grown to more than 30 events held each year
throughout May in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange,
Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura.
This tremendous nonprofit endeavor is further supported by
Southern California companies who offer sponsorship for the
many programs and informational materials the World Trade
Week Committee creates each year.

Bold in world trade
since 1888
For 125 years, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce
has championed the needs of the business community and the
citizens of the Los Angeles region. This work has taken on many
forms — from serving as the voice of the business community in
the halls of government, to promoting economic development
and fostering collaboration throughout the community — all in an
effort to ensure economic prosperity and quality of life.
Upon its inception, one of the Chamber’s first efforts was to lobby
Congress to create a deep water port. Soon after, the Chamber
recognized the need for good manufacturing jobs and mobilized
a national effort to secure plants and factories in the region. This
effort extended to building markets both nationally and abroad
for local products. Aiming to fuel more trade through the Port of
Los Angeles, the Chamber focused on securing a shipping canal
in Central America, and in 1914, the Panama Canal opened and
further connected L.A. to the world.
All of these efforts by the Chamber helped create the most broadbased,
sustainable regional economy in the nation, as well as
secure the region’s status as a leader in global trade. Today, with
the world’s No. 6 busiest customs district, the L.A. region is the
home to two-way trade valued at more than $386 billion.
