The Manor of Lackham IV : 19 th & 20 th century owners Capt. Rooke died in 1855 134 . The estate was put up for sale by auction in June the following year by three of his sons but didn’t sell. From this it can be seen that the date given in Vernon (1856) is actually the date of the report rather than that of death. 45
The Manor of Lackham IV : 19 th & 20 th century owners Indeed not only did it not sell but William Wallace Rooke seems to have been adding to the estate after this; in 1857 135 William’s agent, Thomas Abdy Fellowes, purchased a pasture at Notton, known as Neale’s Leigh 136 , for £205 at an auction held at the Angel in Chippenham, from the executors of John Corbett Neale 137 . Of course Thomas Abdy Fellowes was more than just William Wallace Rooke’s agent, as was seen above he was William Wallace’s brother in law, having married Eliza Sophia (again in 1844) at St Cyriac’s in Lacock 138 . The Caldwells at Lackham The estate was finally sold, in 1858, to Henry Berney Caldwell 139 for £40,000. The Indenture for this sale is a useful document as it shows where four sons were living, these being William Wallace Rooke 140 , the Rev Frederick John Rooke 141 , Alexander Beaumont Rooke 142 and Octavius Cobb Rooke 143 . The sale indenture 144 was made between the Rookes and Henry 135 W&SHC 109/389 It is noted on the indenture specifically that Fellowes was acting as Agent for William Wallace Rooke 136 W&SHC 109/389 5 acres 1 rood 14 perches, 137 William Gale of Horton, Glos, John Arnold of Chipping Sodbury, Glos and David Selm of Dodington, Glos 138 12 th September 1844 The Annual Register vol 86 p184 139 W&SHC 44/8 Indenture of Sale dated 24 Dec 1858 140 W&SHC 44/8 In 1858 141 W&SHC 44/8 of Frampisham Rectory, Devon 142 W&SHC 44/8 of The Ridge near Corsham 143 W&SHC 44/8 of Dean Hall, Gloucester 144 W&SHC 44/8 dated 24 Dec 1858 46
