Faculty Research 1 9 9 8 - 1 9 9 9 At the School of Nursing, education, re s e a rch, and clinical practice a re fully integrated to advance nursing and health-care knowledge. With public and private funding, Penn Nursing faculty and students are involved in leading-edge studies focusing on clinical services, health services, community and urban health-care delivery, patient outcomes, health policy, nursing education, history, and health care . The accompanying list of re s e a rc h p rojects illustrates the range of scholarly inquiries conducted by Penn Nursing standing faculty, individually and in collaboration with nurses and m u l t i d i s c i p l i n a ry investigators here at Penn and at other institutions t h roughout the country. While listings a re limited to funded projects involving standing faculty members as principal or coinvestigators, an equally i m p ressive list exists of re s e a rch projects currently being conducted by other members of the Penn Nursing faculty and graduate and underg r a d u- ate students. ■ Foundational Sciences and Health Systems Advanced training in nursing outcomes research National Institute of Nursing Research (1999-2004) Principal investigator: Linda Aiken; coinvestigators: Loretta Sweet Jemmott, Julie Sochalski Alzheimer's disease patients and their care - givers: a pilot study Frank Morgan Jones Fund (1997-1999) Principal investigator: Mary Naylor An analysis of injuries and their outcomes in the elderly population in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Frank Morgan Jones Fund (1999) Principal investigator: Therese Richmond Nursing Research Central to Penn’s New AIDS Center urses are an extremely important integrating force in AIDS re s e a rc h “N and care,” Linda Aiken, PhD, FAAN, FRCN, RN, said. “They have a b road span of interest and expertise in the study of AIDS prevention and care.” It follows that the School of Nursing is leading the Behavioral and Social S e rvices Program of Penn’s new Center for AIDS Research, which the National Institutes of Health recently funded with a $1.5 million grant. The primary focus of the Center is to advance understanding of AIDS prevention. P e n n ’s five-year NIH grant will finance re s e a rch across multiple scientific disciplines at the University to “build infrastru c t u re that enables us to extend Penn Nursing’s leading AIDS researchers, Linda Aiken and Loretta Sweet Jemmott the science that we alre a d y have under way on AIDS care and prevention,” said Aiken, d i rector of the program in the behavioral and social scie n c e s . “ We are organizing the immense scientific capacity of this University in the behavioral and social sciences and targeting it toward existing and new grant initiatives to improve the science of AIDS prevention and c a re,” Aiken said. The Center for AIDS Research is the only one in the country to include nursing as a central component.
