R e s e a rch indicates that linear growth measurements in primary care practices often are obtained by untrained observers using inaccurate technique with faulty equipment. Te rri Lipman, PhD, CRNP, RN, (GNu’83, DNSc’91) assistant pro f e s s o r of nursing of children and a nurse practitioner in endocrinology at the C h i l d re n ’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and her co-principal investigator, Kare n Hench, RN, MS, a doctoral student at Johns Hopkins University, designed a study to assess measurement practices in eight areas of the country and Putting research into practice and education, Terri Lipman works with Jason Baker to measure a young patient. then provided training programs and measuring equipm e n t . Each geographic area is supervised by a site coordinator who is a nurse from the Pediatric Endocrinology Nursing Society. “When children are measured incorre c t- l y, health-care workers often can’t spot g rowth problems,” Lipman said. “This means a growth disorder goes untre a t e d or nurses and doctors fail to spot a symptom of a serious chronic illness.” In Phase I, which already is completed, Lipman obtained data on measure m e n t techniques through a mail survey to a randomly selected group of 1,300 primary care practices. Phase II, which is under way, involves the development of a two-hour training session about growth. In Phase III, 120 providers who perf o rm growth meas u rement will receive assessment of their m e a s u rement technique and equipment instruction. Follow-up visits will occur at three and six months of the training. With the program, Lipman wants to improve growth assessment techniques, raise awareness, and ensure prompt re f e rral of children with g rowth disorders. The principal investigator on more than 15 clinical studies on pediatric diabetes and pediatric growth assessment, Lipman received the Society of Pediatric Nurses’ Excellence in Clinical Practice Aw a rd in 1993. She was h o n o red by her alma mater, Temple University College of Allied Health P rofessions, with the 1999 Certificate of Honor for her dedication to the health issues facing urban childre n. ■ F a l l 1 9 9 9 29
