Penn <strong>Nursing</strong> Celebrates Alumni Weekend 2007<br />

On Saturday, May 12, more than 150 <strong>School</strong> in West Philadelphia. “Public health<br />

alumni and friends attended a series policy must begin by addressing the needs<br />

Issues reflected locally such as<br />

the <strong>School</strong> and the Hospital <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> patient safety and nurse fatigue are also<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> and an expert alumni panel concerns across the globe, added panelists<br />

discussion on “Changing Policy, Changing Lillee Gelinas, GNu ’79, MSN, RN, and<br />

Practice.”<br />

Sean Clarke, GNC ’99. <strong>Research</strong>ers have<br />

Eileen Sullivan-Marx, HUP ’72, Nu increasingly focused on issues <strong>of</strong> nurse<br />

’76, GR ’95, HOM ’01, began the panel migration and the ethics <strong>of</strong> attracting nurses<br />

discussion by sharing some <strong>of</strong> Penn<br />

from other countries. Lillee described an<br />

<strong>Nursing</strong>’s initiatives in its community: the emerging trend wherein recruiters from<br />

recently expanded Living Independently for Dubai, Singapore, and Thailand are hiring top<br />

Elders (LIFE) practice and Penn’s community nurse administrators from the U.S. to foreign<br />

partnership with the William L. Sayre positions at significant pay increases, the<br />

reverse <strong>of</strong> previous trends whereby the West<br />

pulls nurses from the East. The discussion led<br />

one listener to comment, “Updates [such as<br />

these] on the state <strong>of</strong> nursing and healthcare<br />

help me understand what policies I need to<br />

push for.”<br />

After the panel discussion, the day’s<br />

program continued with updates from Afaf I.<br />

Meleis, PhD, DRPS (hon), FAAN, FRCN, the<br />

Margaret Bond Simon Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, and<br />

PNA President Tara Trimarchi, GNu ’97, and<br />

the Alumni Awards presentations. Guests<br />

then moved to the <strong>Nursing</strong> tent on Hill Square,<br />

where alumni and friends remembered the<br />

past and celebrated the future <strong>of</strong> Penn <strong>Nursing</strong>,<br />

culminating with a traditional march through<br />

campus in the Penn Parade.<br />

Greetings from the HUP Alumni President<br />

As the new president <strong>of</strong> the Hospital <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong><br />

Alumni Association, I look forward to working with a talented group <strong>of</strong> board members and<br />

all <strong>of</strong> the alumni as we honor our HUP legacy.<br />

This year, the board will remain committed to many activities, including continuing the<br />

alumni association membership drive, generating support for both the HUP scholarship fund<br />

and the Philadelphia Foundation, producing the HUP alumni newsletter, and collaborating<br />

with alumni interested in starting satellite groups. Our next social event, the Fall Luncheon,<br />

will be held October 27th. I hope to make new friends and see many <strong>of</strong> you there.<br />
