Anne Dawson<br />
Candidate OMEA Vice-President for Vocal Division<br />
A native of Missouri, Anne Dawson received the<br />
Bachelor of <strong>Music</strong> Education degree from Truman State<br />
University (formerly Northeast Missouri State University,)<br />
in Kirksville, Missouri, and the Master of <strong>Music</strong> degree<br />
in Vocal Performance from the University of <strong>Oklahoma</strong>.<br />
Dawson is in her twenty-second year as the Vocal <strong>Music</strong><br />
Director at Westmoore High School, where she directs<br />
six performing groups, (Chamber Choir, Concert Choir,<br />
Women’s Choir, Freshman Choir, Show Choir, and<br />
Chamber Singers,) teaches Advanced Placement <strong>Music</strong><br />
Theory, and is a sponsor for the junior class. Prior to<br />
assuming her position at Westmoore, she team- taught<br />
junior high and high school vocal music with John Gerber<br />
at Weatherford Public Schools. Dawson has adjudicated<br />
district and state music festivals in <strong>Oklahoma</strong> and Missouri.<br />
In addition to her position at Westmoore, she held the office<br />
of OMEA All-State Mixed Chorus Chair for the 2010-2011<br />
school year. She has served on the choral faculty of the<br />
<strong>Oklahoma</strong> Arts Institute and the Canterbury Choral Society<br />
Board of Directors, and is a member of the American<br />
Choral Directors Association, <strong>Oklahoma</strong> Choral Directors<br />
Association, and National Association for <strong>Music</strong> Education.<br />
Dawson currently serves as an Advanced Placement<br />
<strong>Music</strong> Theory question leader for the summer reading and<br />
teaches private voice lessons.<br />
Brenda Mechling<br />
Candidate OMEA Vice-President for Choral Division<br />
Brenda Williams Mechling is Choral Director at Del City<br />
High School, where she serves choral and piano lab<br />
students. She is in her sixteenth year of teaching in the<br />
Mid-Del School District. Prior to teaching public school,<br />
Mechling owned and operated Voice Plus, a private vocal<br />
studio, serving the fine arts students of the Mid-Del School<br />
District and surrounding districts for thirteen years. She<br />
earned her Bachelor’s Degree in <strong>Music</strong> Education from the<br />
University of Central <strong>Oklahoma</strong>.<br />
Mechling served as the Southwest American Choral<br />
Directors Association R & S Chair for Vocal Jazz 2006-<br />
2010. In this office she secured presenters for educational<br />
sessions, hosted numerous show and jazz choir roundtable<br />
meetings, and organized and conducted vocal jazz<br />
reading sessions at American Choral Directors Association<br />
Regional and National Conventions. Her articles promoting<br />
vocal jazz have been published in the SWACDA Division’s<br />
Common Times. Her choral students have auditioned and<br />
been selected for American Choral Directors Association<br />
Regional and National Convention Honor Choirs,<br />
<strong>Oklahoma</strong> Choral Directors Association All-State Honor<br />
Choirs, and two of her choirs were featured at <strong>Oklahoma</strong><br />
Choral Directors Association Summer Conventions.<br />
OMEA has always been an important part of Mechling’s<br />
professional life. On two occasions, choirs under her<br />
leadership have performed at the OMEA State Convention.<br />
Her choral students have been selected for the OMEA<br />
